PHILIPENSIS ben [ben men b.] of Macedoyne. These whanne thei hadden resceyued the word of treuthe, stoden stidfastli [stifly ag.] in the feith, and thei [Om. R pr. m.] resceyueden not false apostlis. The apostle [postle g.] preisith these [hem T.] , writynge to hem fro Rome, out of prisoun, bi Epafrodite.

[verse 1] Poul and Tymothe, seruauntis of Jhe|su Crist, to alle the [Om. b.] hooli men in Crist Jhesu, that ben at Filippis, with bi|schopis [verse 2] and dekenes, grace and pees to ȝou of God oure fadir, and of the Lord Jhesu Crist. [verse 3] I do thankyngis to my God [verse 4] in al mynde of ȝou euere more in alle

my preyeris for alle ȝou with ioye, and [verse 5] make a [ȝe a b. Om. k pr. m.] bisechyng on ȝoure comynyng in the gospel of Crist, fro the firste day [verse 6] til nowe; tristenynge [tristinge Ek.] this ilke [Om. e pr. m. k.] thing, that he that bigan in ȝou a good werk, schal perfourme it til in to the dai of Jhesu Crist. [verse 7] As it is iust to me to feele this thing for alle ȝou, for that Y haue ȝou in herte, and [Om. b.] in my boondis, and in defending and confermyng of the gospel, that alle ȝe be felowis of my ioye. [verse 8] For God is a witnesse to me, hou Y coueyte alle ȝou in the bowelis [entrailis R.] of Jhesu Crist. [verse 21] For me to lyue is Crist, and to die is wynnyng. [verse 22] That if to lyue in fleisch, is fruyt of werk to me, lo! what Y schal [Om. E.] chese, Y knowe not. [verse 27] Oneli lyue ȝe worthili to the gospel of Crist, that whether whanne Y come and se ȝou, ethir absent Y here of ȝou, that ȝe stonden in o [the k pr. m.] spirit of o [Om. k pr. m.] wille, trauelinge togidere to the feith of the gospel. [verse 28] And in no thing be ȝe aferd of aduersaries, which is to hem cause of [verse 29] perdicioun, but to ȝou cause [a cause Q.] of heelthe. And this thing is of God. For it is ȝouun to ȝou for Crist, that not oneli ȝe bileuen in hym, but also that ȝe suffren [verse 30] for hym; hauynge the same strijf, which ȝe saien in me, and now ȝe han herd of me.

CAP. II.

[verse 1] Therfor if ony coumfort is in Crist, if ony solace of [in k pr. m.] charite, if ony felou|schipe of spirit, if ony inwardnesse of [verse 2] merci doyng, fille ȝe my ioye, that ȝe

vndurstonde the same thing, and haue the same charite, of o wille, and feelen [verse 3] the same thing; no thing bi strijf, nether by veyn glorie, but in mekenesse, dem|ynge eche othere [Om. k pr. m.] to be heiȝer than hym [verse 4] silf; not biholdinge ech bi hym silf what thingis ben his owne, but tho thingis that ben of othere men. [verse 13] For it is God that worchith in ȝou, bothe to wilne [wil k pr. m.] , and to performe, for good wille. [verse 14] And do ȝe alle thingis with [verse 15] out grutchingis and doutyngis; that ȝe be with out playnt, and symple as the sones of God, with out repreef, in the myddil of a schrewid nacioun and a weiward; among whiche ȝe schynen as ȝyueris of liȝt in the world. [verse 16] And holde ȝe togidere the word of lijf to my glorie in the day of Crist; for Y haue not run|nen

in veyn, nether Y haue trauelid in veyn. [verse 17] But thouȝ Y be offrid or slayn on the sacrifice and seruyce of ȝoure feith, Y haue ioye, and Y thanke [ether togidere thanke K marg.] ȝou alle. [verse 21] For alle men seken tho thingis that ben her owne, not tho that ben of Crist Jhesu. [verse 22] But knowe ȝe the asaie of hym, for as a sone to the fadir he hath seruyd with me in the gospel. [verse 23] Therfor Y hope that Y schal sende hym to ȝou, anoon as Y se what thingis ben aboute me. [verse 24] And Y triste in the Lord, that also my silf schal [Om. k pr. m.] come to ȝou soone. [verse 25] And Y gesside it nedeful to sende to ȝou Epafrodite, my brother and euene worchere, and myn euene knyȝt, but ȝoure apostle, and the mynystre of my nede. [verse 26] For he desiride ȝou alle, and he was sorewful, therfor that ȝe herden that he was sijk. [verse 27] For he was sijk to the deth, but God hadde merci on him; and not oneli on hym, but also on me, lest Y hadde heuynesse on heuynesse. [verse 28] Ther|for more hastili Y sente [sende g.] hym, that whanne ȝe han seyn hym, ȝe haue ioye eft, and Y be withouten heuynesse. [verse 29] Therfor resseyue ȝe [Om. a.] hym with al ioye in the Lord, and haue ȝe suche with al onour. CAP. III.

[verse 1] Hennus [Henne Kbc. Hen eh.] forward [forthward c.] , my britheren, haue ȝe ioye in the Lord. To write to ȝou the same thingis, to me it is not slow, and to ȝou it is necessarie. [verse 2] Se ȝe houndis, se ȝe yuele werk men, se ȝe dyuysioun. [verse 3] For we ben circumcisioun, which bi spirit seruen to God, and glo|rien in Crist Jhesu, and han not trist in [verse 4] the fleisch, thouȝ Y haue trust, ȝhe, in the fleisch. If ony othere man is seyn [yseyn a.] [verse 5] to triste in the [Om. EIKQbceghkoαβ.] fleisch, Y more, that was circumcidid in the eiȝtthe dai, of the kyn [kynde k.] of Israel, of the lynage of Benia|myn, an Ebrew of Ebrewis, bi the lawe [verse 6] a Farisee, bi loue pursuynge the chirche of God, bi riȝtwisnesse that is in the lawe lyuynge with out playnt. [verse 7] But whiche thingis weren to me wynnyngis, Y haue demed these apeyryngis [as peiringis C pr. m. ac.] for Crist. [verse 8] Netheles Y gesse alle thingis to be peirement [apeirement k.] for the cleer science [conscience k pr. m.] of Jhesu Crist my Lord. For whom Y made alle thingis peyrement, and Y deme as [verse 9] drit, that Y wynne Crist, and that Y be foundun in hym, not hauynge my riȝt|wisnesse that is of the lawe, but that that is of the feith of Crist Jhesu, that [verse 10] is of God the riȝtwisnesse in feith, to knowe hym, and the vertu of his risyng aȝen, and the felouschipe of his passioun, [verse 11] and be [to be CEIMQUac sec. m. e sec. m. ghkoβ.] maad lijk to his deeth, if on ony maner Y come to the resurreccioun that is fro deth. [verse 12] Not that now Y haue takun, or now am [I am gk.] parfit; but Y sue, if in ony maner Y comprehende, in which thing [Om. k pr. m.] also Y am comprehendid of Crist Jhesu. [verse 13] Bretheren, Y deme me [Om. k pr. m.] not that Y haue [am b.] comprehendid; but o thing,

Y forȝete tho thingis that ben bihyndis, and stretche [strecchinge AIb. strecchide k.] forth my silf to tho thingis [verse 14] that ben bifore, and pursue to the or|deyned mede [ether prys K marg.] of the [Om. I pr. m.] hiȝ clepyng of God in Crist Jhesu. [verse 15] Therfor who euere we ben perfit, feele we this thing. And if ȝe vndurstonden in othere manere ony thing, this thing God schal schewe to ȝou. [verse 16] Netheles to what thing we han comun, that we vndurstonden the same thing, and that we perfitli dwelle in the same reule. [verse 17] Britheren, be ȝe my folew|eris [folewis A.] , and weyte ȝe hem that walken so, as ȝe han oure fourme. [verse 18] For many walken, whiche Y haue seid ofte to ȝou, but now Y wepinge seie, the enemyes of Cristis [verse 19] cros, whos ende is deth, whos god is the wombe, and the glorie in confusioun of hem, that saueren ertheli thingis. [verse 20] But oure lyuyng is in heuenes; fro whennus also we abiden the sauyour [verse 21] oure Lord Jhesu Crist, which schal re|forme the bodi of oure mekenesse, that is maad lijk to the bodi of his clere|nesse, bi the worching bi which he mai `also make [make also R.] alle thingis suget to hym.

CAP. IV.

[verse 1] Therfor, my britheren most derewor|the and most desirid, my ioye and my coroun, so stonde ȝe in the Lord, most dere britheren. [verse 2] Y preye Eucodiam, and biseche [Y biseche b.] Synticem, to vndurstonde the same thing in the Lord. [verse 3] Also Y preye and [Om. b.] thee, german felow, helpe thou the ilke wymmen that traueliden with me in the gospel, with Clement and othere myn helperis, whos names ben in the book of lijf. [verse 4] Ioye ȝe in the Lord euere more; eft Y seie, ioye ȝe. [verse 5] Be ȝoure pacyence knowun to alle men; the Lord is niȝ.

[verse 6] Be ȝe nothing bisi, but in al preyer and biseching, with doyng of thankyngis, be ȝoure axyngis [axynge k. askyngis o.] knowun at God. [verse 7] And the [Om. b.] pees of God, that passith al wit, kepe ȝoure hertis and vndurstondingis in Crist Jhesu. [verse 8] Fro hennus forth, bri|theren, what euere [Om. R.] thingis ben sothe, what euere thingis chast, what euere thingis iust, what euere thingis hooli, what euere thingis able to be louyd, what euere thingis of good fame, if ony vertu, if ony preising of discipline, [verse 9] thenke ȝe these thingis, that also ȝe han lerud [lernid EKQRegkoαβ.] , and take, and heed, and seyn in me. Do ȝe these thingis, and God of pees schal be with ȝou. [verse 10] But Y ioyede greetli in the Lord, that sum tyme aftir|ward ȝe floureden aȝen to feele for me, as also ȝe feeliden. But ȝe weren ocupied, [verse 11] Y seie not as for nede, for Y haue lerud [lerned alii.] to be sufficient in whiche thingis Y am. [verse 12] And Y can also be lowid, Y can also haue plentee. Euery where and in alle thingis Y am tauȝt to be fillid, and to hungur, and to abounde [abounde, eithir to be plenteuous R.] , and to suffre myseiste [myseyse Ig.] . [verse 13] Y may alle thingis in hym that coumfortith me. [verse 14] Netheles ȝe han doon wel, comynynge to my tribulacioun. [verse 15] For [Om. e.] and [also CEQXa pr. m. b sec. m. cegkα. Om. [verse 18] For Y haue alle thingis, and abounde [I abounde ek.] ; Y am fillid with tho thingis takun of Epafrodite, whiche ȝe

senten in to the odour of swetnesse, a couenable sacrifice, plesynge to God. [verse 19] And my God fil alle ȝoure desire, by hise richessis in glorie in Crist Jhesu. [verse 20] But to God and [Om. k.] oure fadir be glorie in to worldis of worldis. [verse 21] Amen. Grete ȝe wel euery hooli man in Crist Jhesu. [verse 22] Tho britheren that ben with me, greten ȝou wel. Alle hooli men greten ȝou wel, moost sotheli thei that ben of the empe|rouris hous.
