CAP. VI.

Therfor what schulen we seie? [verse 1] Schu|len we dwelle in synne, that grace be plenteuouse? God forbede. [verse 2] For hou schulen we that ben deed to [for T.] synne, lyue ȝit ther ynne? [verse 3] Whether, britheren, ȝe knowen not, that [Om. k.] whiche euere we ben baptisid in Crist Jhesu, we ben bap|tisid in his deth [that is, bi the vertu of his deeth. in to deeth; that is, in to liknesse of deeth, as to synful lijf. by baptym; that is, maad lijk Cristis deeth by baptim. to synne, that is, for synne to be doon awey. vndir the lawe, of Moyses, that ȝaf not grace. Lyre here. e.] ? [verse 4] For we ben togidere biried with hym bi baptym `in to [in k pr. m.] deth; that [for Eegα.] as Crist aroos [roos EIQRTegα.] fro deth bi the [Om. R.]

glorie of the fadir, so walke we in a newnesse of lijf. [verse 5] For if we plauntid togidere [plauntid togi|dere; bi Cristis deeth we ben drawun out of synne, as out of yuel lond, and ben plauntid in the good lond of grace with Crist. oure elde man; that is, conuersacioun of synne. the bodi of synne; that is, the heep of synnes. Lyre here. e.] ben maad to [Om. b.] the licnesse of his deth, also we schulen be of the lic|nesse [verse 6] of his risyng aȝen; witynge this thing, that oure olde man is crucified togidere, that the bodi of synne be dis|truyed, that we serue no more to synne. [verse 7] For he that is deed [deed to synne CKMQ sec. m. RTUXag sec. m. hko.] , is iustefied fro synne. [verse 8] And if we ben deed with Crist, we bileuen that also we schulen lyue to|gidere [verse 9] with hym; witinge for [that R.] Crist, rys|ynge aȝen fro deth, now dieth not, deeth schal no more haue lordschip on hym. [verse 10] For that he was deed to synne, he was deed onys; but that he lyueth [lyue I.] , he liueth to God. [verse 11] So ȝe deme [deme ȝe R.] ȝou silf to be deed to synne, but lyuynge to God in `Jhesu Crist [Christ Jhesu R.] oure Lord. [verse 12] Therfor regne not synne in ȝoure [oure ER pr. m. eg.] deedli bodi, that ȝe obeische [obeie R.] to hise coueityngis. [verse 13] Nether ȝyue ȝe ȝoure membris armuris of wick|idnesse to synne, but ȝyue ȝe ȝou silf to God, as thei that lyuen of deed men, and ȝoure [ȝeue ȝe ȝoure k pr. m.] membris armuris of riȝtwisnesse to God. [verse 14] For synne schal not haue lord|schipe on [ouer T.] ȝou; for ȝe ben not vndur the lawe, but vndur grace. [verse 15] What therfor? Schulen we do synne, for we ben not vndur the lawe, but vndur grace? [verse 16] God forbede. Witen ȝe not, that to whom ȝe ȝyuen ȝou [ȝou self R.] seruauntis to obeie to, ȝe ben seruauntis of that thing, to which [which thing R.] ȝe han obeschid [obeied R.] , ether of synne to deth, ether of obedience to riȝtwisnesse? [verse 17] But Y thanke God, that ȝe weren seruauntis of synne; but ȝe han obeischid [obeied R.] of herte in to that fourme of techyng, in which ȝe ben bitakun [taken R.] . [verse 18] And ȝe delyuered fro synne, ben maad seruauntis of riȝtwis|nesse.

[verse 19] Y seie that thing that is of man, for the vnstidefastnesse [vnstablenesse CEIKMQRTUXabceghkoαβ.] of ȝoure fleisch. But as ȝe han ȝouun ȝoure membris to serue to vnclennesse, and to wickidnesse `in to [for to mayntene I.] wickidnesse, so now ȝyue ȝe ȝoure membris to serue to riȝtwisnesse in to hoolynesse. [verse 20] For whanne ȝe weren ser|uauntis of synne, ȝe weren fre [that is, spuylid fro the good of riȝtful|nes. is deeth, that serueden to synne. Lyre here. e.] of riȝt|fulnesse [riȝtwisnesse ERahkα.] . [verse 21] Therfor what fruyt hadden ȝe thanne in tho thingis, in whiche ȝe schamen [aschamen a.] now? For the ende of hem is deth. [verse 22] But now ȝe delyuered fro synne, and maad seruauntis to God, han ȝour fruyt in to holinesse, and the ende euerlastinge lijf. For the wagis of synne is deth; the grace of God is euerlastynge lijf in Crist Jhesu our Lord.
