CAP. VIII.

[verse 1] Therfor now no thing of dampnacioun is to hem that ben in Crist Jhesu, whiche wandren not after the flesch. [verse 2] For the lawe of the spirit [the lawe of spirit; that is, the lawe of the gospel. Lyre here. e.] of lijf in Crist Jhesu hath delyuerid me fro the lawe of synne, and of deth. [verse 3] For that that was vnpossible to the lawe, in what thing it was sijk bi flesch, God sente his sone in to the licknesse of fleisch of synne [of synne; that is, of him silf, maad sacrifice for synne. dampnede synne; that is, he dide awey synne by his passioun. in flesch; that is, in man. of synne; that is, of God the fa|dir, quykene to lijf vndeedly. prudence of flesch; by which a man can sliȝ|ly gete and pursue fleischeli goodis. is deeth; that is, makith deeth of synne, and of helle, and ofte of kynde. Lyre here. e.] , and of synne dampnede synne in [verse 4] fleisch; that the iustefiyng of the lawe were fulfillid in vs, that goen not aftir the fleisch, but aftir the spirit. [verse 5] For thei that ben aftir the fleisch, saueren tho thingis that ben of the fleisch; but thei that ben after the spirit, feelen tho thingis that ben of the spirit. For the [verse 6] prudence of fleisch is deth; but the

prudence of spirit is lijf and pees. [verse 7] For the wisdom of the [Om. T.] fleisch is enemye to God; for it is not suget to the lawe of God, for nether it may. [verse 8] And thei that ben in fleisch, moun not plese to God. [verse 9] But ȝe ben not in fleisch, but in spirit; if netheles the spirit of God dwellith in ȝou. But if ony [ony man Q pr. m.] hath not the spirit of Crist, this is not his. [verse 10] For if Crist is in ȝou, the bodi is deed for synne, but the spirit lyueth for iustefiyng. [verse 11] And if the spirit of hym that reiside Jhesu Crist fro deth dwellith in ȝou, he that reiside Jhesu Crist fro deth, shal quykene also ȝoure deedli bodies, for the spirit of hym that dwellith in ȝou. [verse 12] Therfor, britheren, we ben dettouris, not to the flesch, that we lyuen aftir the flesch. [verse 13] For if ȝe [we Eb.] lyuen aftir the fleisch, ȝe schulen die; but if ȝe bi the spirit sleen the dedis of the fleisch, ȝe schulen lyue. [verse 14] For who euere ben led bi the spirit of God, these ben the sones of God. [verse 15] For ȝe han not take eftsoone the spirit of seruage in drede, but ȝe han taken the spirit of adopcioun [adopcioun, either purchase R. bifore ordeyned k marg.] of sones [that is, sones of God by grace. e.] , in which we crien, Abba, fadir. [verse 16] And the ilke spirit ȝeldith witnessyng to oure spirit, that we ben [verse 17] the sones of God; if sones, and eiris, `and eiris [eiris forsothe I.] of God, and eiris [the eires R.] togidere with Crist; if netheles we suffren togi|dere, that also we ben glorified togidere. [verse 18] And Y deme [gesse I.] , that the passiouns of this tyme ben not worthi [euene worthi A sec. m.] to the glorie to comynge, that schal be schewid in vs. [verse 19] For the abidyng of creature [that is, man. Lyre here. e.] abidith the schewyng of the sones of God. [verse 20] But the creature is suget to vanyte [that is, to passioun, deeth and turnynge in to aischis. not willinge; that is, the synne of Adam, that is not wilful bi oure owne·wille. Lire here. e.] , not will|ynge, but for hym that made it [Om. T.] suget in [verse 21] hope; for the ilke creature schal be de|lyuered fro [of T.] seruage of corrupcioun in to liberte [libertee and fredom R. the liberte k.] of the glorie of the sones of God.

[verse 22] And we witen, that ech creature sorew|ith, and trauelith with peyne til ȝit. [verse 23] And not oneli it, but also we vs silf, that han the first fruytis of the spirit, and we vs silf sorewen with ynne vs for the adop|cioun [adopcioun, or purchasyng R.] of Goddis sonys [that is, to be sones of God bi grace. e.] , abidynge the aȝenbiyng of oure bodi. [verse 24] But bi hope we ben maad saaf. For hope that is seyn, is not hope [Om. R.] ; for who hopith that thing, that he seeth? [verse 25] And if we hopen that thing that we seen not, we abiden bi pacience. [verse 26] And also the spirit helpith oure infirmyte; for what we schulen preie, as it bihoueth, we witen not, but the ilke spirit axith [that is, mak|ith us to axe. [verse 27] For he that sekith the hertis, woot what the spirit desirith, for bi God [that is, at Goddis wille. Lire here. e.] he axith for hooli men. [verse 28] And we witen, that to men `that louen [louynge R.] God, alle thingis worchen to|gidere in to good, to hem that aftir purpos [after purpos; that is, predes|tynacioun ether bifore ordeyn|yng by grace. [verse 29] For thilke [thoo R. ilke T.] that he knewe bifor, he bifor ordenede bi grace to be maad lijk to the ymage of his sone, that he be the first bigetun among many britheren. [verse 30] And thilke [thoo R. ilke T.] that he bifore ordeynede to blis, hem he clep|ide; and whiche [whom I.] he clepide, hem he ius|tifiede; and whiche [whom I.] he iustifiede, and [Om. I.] hem he glorifiede. [verse 31] What thanne schulen we seie to these thingis? If God [God is Ik. God be Ra sec. m.] for vs, who is aȝens vs? [verse 32] The [Om. R.] which also sparide not his owne sone, but `for vs alle bitook hym [bitook him for vs alle R.] , hou also ȝaf he not to vs alle thingis with hym? [verse 33] Who schal accuse aȝens the chosun men of God? It [verse 34] is God that iustifieth, who is it that condempneth? It is Jhesus Crist that was deed, ȝhe, the which roos aȝen, the which is on the riȝt half of God, and the which preieth for vs. [verse 35] Who thanne schal

departe vs fro the charite of Crist? tribulacioun, or anguysch, or hungur, or nakidnesse, or persecucioun, or perel, or swerd? [verse 36] As it is writun, For we ben slayn al dai for thee; we [but we a.] ben gessid as scheep of slauȝtir. [verse 37] But in alle these thingis we ouercomen, for hym that lou|yde vs. [verse 38] But Y am certeyn, that nethir deeth, nether lijf, nether aungels, nethir principatus, nether vertues [virtutes A pr. m. Ea.] , nether pre|sent thingis, nether thingis to comynge, [verse 39] nether strengthe, nether [ne g.] heiȝth, nether depnesse, nether noon [ony Rk.] othir creature may departe [departe vs; Poul spekith here of hem that ben chosun of God to blis, that moun not fynali be de|partid fro Crist.
