CAP. VII.

[verse 1] Britheren, whethir [wher CIKMQUXa.] ȝe knowun not; for Y speke to men `that knowen [knowynge R. that knowith bchoβ.] the lawe; for the lawe hath lordschip in a man, as long tyme as it [he I sup. ras. KRTg sec. m.] lyueth? [verse 2] For that womman that is vndur an hose|bonde, is boundun to the lawe, while the hosebonde lyueth; but if hir hose|bonde is deed, sche is delyuered fro the lawe of the hosebonde. [verse 3] Therfor sche schal be clepid auoutresse, if sche be with another man, while the hosebonde lyueth; but if hir hosebonde is deed, sche is delyuered fro the [Om. K pr. m. MQUX pr. m. Oβ.] lawe of the hosebonde, that sche be not auoutresse, if sche be with another man [Om. I.] . [verse 4] And so, my britheren, ȝe ben maad deed to the lawe [maad deed to the lawe of Moyses. by the body of Crist; that is, for ȝe ben maad membris of Crist bi baptim, which is gene|racioun of newe and goostly lijf. in flesch; that is, lyueden fleischli bifore conuersioun. passioun of synnes; that is, fleschely coue|tisis. newenesse of spirit; that is, bi the rule of the newe lawe. eldnesse of lettre; that is, not bi the rule of the elde lawe, as to tho thingis that ben auoydid bi the newe testa|ment. fro the lawe of deeth; that is, fro Moyses lawe. knew not synne; that is, to be yuel. occasioun takun; that is, by oure part. I lyuede with|out the lawe; that is, it sem|ede to me to lyue, for I was not afeerd of deeth of synne, for it apperide not. synne lyu|ede aȝen; that is, was knowun to me. Lyre here. e.] bi the bodi of Crist, that ȝe ben of another, that roos aȝen fro deth, that ȝe bere fruyt to God. [verse 5] For whanne we weren in fleisch, passiouns of synnes,

that weren bi the lawe, wrouȝten in oure membris, to bere fruyt to deth. [verse 6] But now we ben vnboundun fro the lawe of deth, in which we weren holdun, so that we seruen in newnesse of spirit, and not in eldnesse of lettre [the lettre b.] . [verse 7] What therfor schulen we seie? The lawe is synne? God forbede. But Y knew not synne, but bi lawe; for Y wiste not that coueitynge was synne, but for the lawe seide, Thou schalt not coueyte. [verse 8] And thoruȝ occasioun takun, synne bi the maundement [comaundement C sec. m. hk.] hath wrouȝt in me al coueytise; for withouten the lawe, synne was deed. [verse 9] And Y lyuede withouten the lawe sumtyme; but whanne the comaundement [maundement T.] was comun, synne lyu|ede aȝen. [verse 10] But Y was deed, and this comaundement that was to lijf, was foundun to [in k.] me, to be to [Om. EI pr. m. Kegoβ.] deth. [verse 11] For synne, thorouȝ occasioun takun bi the comaundement [maundement T.] , disceyuede me, and bi that it slow me. [verse 12] Therfor the lawe is hooli, and the comaundement is hooli, and iust, and good. [verse 13] Is thanne that thing that is good, maad deth to me? God forbede. But synne, that it seme synne, thorouȝ good thing [Om. T.] wrouȝte deth to me, that me [men T. my k.] synne ouer maner thorouȝ the comaundement. [verse 14] And we witen, that the lawe is spiritual; but Y am fleischli, seld vndur synne. [verse 15] For Y vndurstonde [vndirstode T.] not that that Y worche; for Y do not the good thing that Y wole, but Y do thilke yuel thing that Y hate. [verse 16] And if Y do that thing that Y wole not, Y consente to the lawe, that it is good. [verse 17] But now Y worche not it now [Om. R sec. m. k.] , but the synne that dwellith in me. [verse 18] But and [Om. A pr. m. k pr. m.] Y woot, that in me, that is, in my fleisch, dwellith no good; for [for whi e sec. m.] wille lieth to me,

but Y fynde not to performe good thing. [verse 19] For Y do not thilke good thing that Y wole, but Y do thilke [ilke T.] yuel thing that Y wole not. [verse 20] And if Y do that yuel thing that Y wole not, Y worche not it, but the synne that dwellith in me. [verse 21] Therfor Y fynde the lawe to me will|ynge to do good thing, for yuel thing lieth to me. [verse 22] For Y delite togidere to the lawe of God, aftir the ynnere man. But [verse 23] Y se another lawe in my membris, aȝen|fiȝtynge [fiȝtynge aȝen R. aȝenseiynge a.] the lawe of my soule, and mak|ynge me caitif in the lawe of synne, that is in my membris. [verse 24] Y am an vnceli [ether vnhappi K marg. vnseely R.] man; who schal delyuer me fro the bodi of this synne? [verse 25] The grace of God, bi Jhesu Crist oure Lord. Therfor Y my silf bi the soule serue to the lawe of God; but bi fleisch [the fleisch X sec. m. ak.] to the lawe of synne.
