CAP. XII.

[verse 1] And Jhesus bigan to speke to hem in parablis. A man plauntide a vynȝerd, and sette [settide QRhi.] an hegge aboute it, and [and he I.] dalf a

lake, and bildide a toure, and hiryde it to tilieris [erthetiliers gk.] , and wente forth in pilgrim|age. [verse 2] And he sente to the erthe tilieris in tyme a seruaunt, to resseyue of the erthe tilieris of the fruyt of the vynȝerd. [verse 3] And thei token hym, and beeten [beoten him K.] , and leften hym voide. [verse 4] And eftsoone [eft g.] he sente to hem anothir seruaunt, and thei woundiden hym in the heed, and tur|mentiden [ether puniȝsshiden K marg.] hym. [verse 5] And eftsoone he sente another, and thei slowen hym, and othir mo, betynge summe, and sleynge othere. [verse 6] But ȝit he hadde a moost derworth sone, and he sente hym last to hem, and seide, Perauenture thei schulen [wolden C. wolen plures. wil EP.] drede my sone. [verse 7] But the erthetilieris seiden togidere, This is the eire; come ȝe, sle we hym, and the eritage schal be ourun. [verse 8] And thei tokun hym, and killiden [kilden him K.] , and castiden [castiden him IKR pr. m.] out without the vynȝerd. [verse 9] Thanne what schal the lord of the vynȝerd do? He schal come, and lese the tilieris [erthetilieris k.] , and ȝyue the vynȝerd to othere. [verse 10] Whether ȝe han not red this scripture, The stoon which the bilderis han disspisid, this is maad in to the heed of the corner? [verse 11] This thing is doon of the Lord, and is [it is I.] wondirful in oure iȝen. [verse 12] And thei souȝten to holde hym, and thei dredden the puple; for thei knewen that to hem he seide this [verse 13] parable; and thei leften hym, and thei wenten awei. And thei senten to hym summe of the Farisees and [and of the k pr. m.] Erodians, to take hym in word. [verse 14] Whiche [The whiche I.] camen [comen R.] , and seien [seiden C.] to hym, Maistir, we witen that thou art sothfast, and reckist not of ony man [Om. R pr. m.] ; for nethir thou bihold|ist in to the [Om. Qck.] face of man [oni man EIPR.] , but thou techist the weie of God in treuthe. Is it

leeueful that tribute be ȝouun to the emperoure, or we schulen not ȝyue? [verse 15] Which [The whiche I.] witynge her pryuei falsnesse, seide to hem, What tempten ȝe me? brynge ȝe to me a peny, that Y se. [verse 16] And thei brouȝten to hym. [verse 17] And Jhesus answeride and seide to hem, Thanne ȝelde ȝe to the emperour tho thingis that ben of [Om. K pr. m. hik.] the emperours [emperour IP pr. m. RC sec. m.] ; and to God tho thingis that ben of God. And thei wondriden of hym. [verse 18] And Sa|duces, that seien [seiden C.] that ther is no ressur|reccioun, camen to hym, and axeden [verse 19] hym, and seiden, Maister, Moyses wroot to vs, that if the brother of a man were deed, and lefte his wijf, and haue no sones, his brother take his wijf, and reise vp seed to his brother. [verse 20] Thanne seuene britheren ther [Om. k.] weren; and the firste took a wijf, and diede [he diede S sec. m.] , and lefte no seed. [verse 21] And the secounde took hir, and he [Om. S.] diede, and nether this [he k.] lefte seed. And the thridde also. [verse 22] And in lijk ma|nere the seuene token hir, and leften not [no bk.] seed. And the womman the [Om. CEIKk.] laste of alle `is deed [died hi.] . [verse 23] Thanne in the resur|reccioun, whanne thei schulen rise aȝen, whos wijf of these [the seuene R pr. m. k.] schal sche be? for seuene hadden hir to wijf. [verse 24] And Jhesus answeride, and seide to hem, Whether ȝe erren not therfor, that ȝe knowe not scripturis, nethir the vertu of God? [verse 25] For [Forsothe I.] whanne thei schulen rise aȝen fro deeth, nether thei schulen wedde, nethir [ne I.] schulen [Om. R sec. m.] be weddid, but thei schulen be as aungels of God in heuenes. [verse 26] And of

deed men, that thei risen aȝen, han ȝe not red in [of k.] the book of Moises, on the buysch, hou God spak to hym, and seide, Y am God of Abraham, and God of Isaac, and God of Jacob? [verse 27] He is not God of deed men, but of lyuynge men; therfor ȝe erren myche. [verse 28] And oon of the scribis, that hadde herde hem dis|puytynge [ether sekinge K marg.] togidir, cam nyȝ, and saiȝ that Jhesus had wel answeride hem, and ax|ide hym, which was the firste maunde|ment of alle. [verse 29] And Jhesus answeride to him, that the firste maundement [comaundement EPQRSbcgekβ.] of alle is, Here thou, Israel, thi Lord God is o [verse 30] God; and thou schalt loue thi Lord God of al thin herte, and of al thi soule, and of al thi mynde, and of al thi myȝt. This is the firste maundement [comaundement b.] . [verse 31] And the secounde is lijk to [Om. EP.] this, Thou schalt loue thi neiȝbore as thi silf. Ther is noon other maundement gretter than these. [verse 32] And the scribe seide to hym, Maister, in treuthe thou hast wel seid; for o God is, and ther is noon other, [verse 33] outakun hym; that he be loued of al the herte, and of al the mynde, and of al the vndurstondynge, and of al the soule, and of al strengthe [the strengthe CIKRSX sec. m. hik.] , and to loue the neiȝbore as hym silf, is gretter than alle brent offryngis [sacrificis k.] and sacrifices [offringis k.] . [verse 34] And Jhesus seynge that he hadde answerid wiseli, seide to hym, Thou art not fer fro the kyngdom of God. [verse 35] And thanne no man durste axe hym no [Om. CKMR sec. m. SUX sec. m. ghikβ.] more ony thing. And Jhesus answeride and seide, techynge in the temple, Hou seien scribis, that Crist is the sone of Dauid? [verse 36] For Dauid hym silf seide in the Hooli Goost, the Lord seide to my lord, Sitte on my riȝthalf, til

[verse 41] And Jhesus sit|tynge aȝens the tresorie, bihelde hou the puple castide [caste I.] monei in to the tresorie; and many riche men castiden many thingis. [verse 42] But whanne a [oo EIQRceghik.] pore widewe was comun, sche keste [castide Ehik.] two [twey plures.] mynutis, that is, a [oo sg.] ferthing. [verse 43] And he clepide to|gidere hise disciplis, and seide to hem, Treuli Y seie to ȝou, that this pore widewe keste more thanne alle, that kesten in to the tresorie. [verse 44] For alle [alle thei IS.] kesten of that thing that thei hadden plente of; but this [she this I.] of her pouert keste alle thingis that sche hadde, al [of g. and al k.] hir lyue|lode.
