CAP. VII.

[verse 1] Nile ȝe deme, `that ȝe be not demed [that ȝe be not demed, and ȝe schulen not be demed A pr. m. CM PUb pr. m. C. and ȝe shul not be demed I sup. ras. KQRSb sec. m. eghkβ.] ; [verse 2] for in what doom ȝe demen, ȝe schulen be demed, and in what mesure ȝe meten, it schal be meten aȝen to ȝou. [verse 3] But what seest thou a litil mote in the iȝe of thi brother, and seest not a beem in thin owne iȝe? [verse 4] Or hou seist thou to thi bro|thir, Brothir, suffre [suffre thou S.] I schal do out a mote fro thin iȝe, and lo! a beem is in thin owne iȝe? [verse 5] Ipocrite, `do thou out first [first do out C. do out first plures et αβ.] the beem of thin [thin owne S.] iȝe, and thanne thou schalt se to [for to A pr. m.] do out the mote of the iȝe of thi brothir. [verse 6] Nile ȝe ȝyue hooli thing [thingis C.] to houndis, nethir caste ȝe ȝoure margaritis bifore swyne, lest perauenture thei defoulen hem with her feet, and the houndis be turned, and al to-tere ȝou. [verse 7] Axe ȝe, and it schal be ȝouun to ȝou; seke ȝe, and ȝe schulen fynde; knocke ȝe, and it schal be openyd to ȝou. [verse 8] For ech that axith, takith; and [Om. C.] he that sekith, fyndith; and it schal be openyd to hym, that knockith. [verse 9] What man of ȝou is, that if his sone axe hym breed, whethir [wher ESe.] he wole [shal Q.] take hym [to him sg.] a stoon? [verse 10] Or if he axe [axeth R.] fische, whether [wher ESXe.] he wole take [ȝiue EI sup. ras. sec. m. α.] hym [to him S.] an edder? [verse 11] Therfor if ȝe, whanne ȝe ben yuele men, kunnen ȝyue good ȝiftis to ȝoure sones, hou myche more ȝoure fa|dir that is in heuenes schal ȝyue good thingis to men that axen hym? [verse 12] Ther|for

alle thingis, what euere thingis ȝe wolen that men do to ȝou, do ȝe to hem, for this is the lawe and the prophetis. [verse 13] Entre ȝe bi the streyt ȝate; for the ȝate that ledith to perdicioun is large, and the weie is [Om. C.] broode, and there ben many that entren bi it. [verse 14] Hou streit is the ȝate, and narwȝ the weye, that ledith to lijf, and ther ben fewe that fynden it. [verse 15] Be ȝe war of fals prophetis, that comen to ȝou in clothingis of scheep, but withynneforth [verse 16] thei ben as [Om. A sec. m. Igh.] wolues of raueyn; of her fruytis ȝe schulen knowe hem. Whether [Wher S passim egk.] men gaderen grapis of thornes, or figus of breris? [verse 17] So euery good tre makith good fruytis; but an yuel tre makith yuel fruytis. [verse 18] A good tre may not make yuel fruytis, nethir an yuel tre make good fruytis. [verse 19] Euery tre that makith not good fruyt, schal be kyt doun, and schal be cast in to the fier. [verse 20] Therfor of her fruytis ȝe schulen knowe hem. [verse 21] Not ech [eueri S.] man that seith to me, Lord, Lord, schal entre in to the kyngdom of heuenes; but he that doith the wille of my fadir that is in heuenes, he schal entre in to the kyng|doom of heuenes. [verse 22] Many schulen seie to me in that dai, Lord, Lord, whether [wher ek.] we han not prophesied in thi name, and han [we haue I.] caste out feendis in thi name, and han doon many vertues in thi name? [verse 23] And [Om. Q pr. m.] thanne Y schal knouleche to hem, That Y knewe ȝou neuere; departe [departeth IS.] awei fro me, ȝe that worchen wickidnesse. [verse 24] Therfor ech [eueri S.] man that herith these my wordis, and doith hem, schal be maad lijk to a wise man, that hath bildid his hous on a stoon. [verse 25] And reyn felde [cam C.] doun, and flodis camen, and wyndis blewen, and russchiden `in to [in C.] that hous; and it felde not doun, for it was foundun [foundid plures et αβ.] on

a stoon. [verse 26] And euery man that herith these my wordis, and doith hem not, is lijk to [Om. S.] a fool, that hath bildid his hous on grauel. [verse 27] And reyn [reines sgh.] cam doun, and floodis camen, and wyndis blewen, and thei [Om. R.] hurliden aȝen [aȝen to Q pr. m.] that hous; and it felde doun, and the fallyng doun therof was greet. [verse 28] And it was doon, whanne Jhesus hadde endid these wordis, the [verse 29] puple wondride on his techyng; for he tauȝte hem, as he that hadde power, and not as the scribis `of hem [Om. C.] , and the [Om. EIKMPRUXbceghkα.] Fa|risees [Fari|sees of hem C.] .
