CAP. XXVII.

[verse 1] But whanne the morowtid was comun, alle the princis of prestis, and the eldre men of the puple token counsel [a counceil R.] aȝens Jhesu, that thei schulden take hym to the deeth. [verse 2] And thei ledden him boundun, and bitoken to [him to Kk.] Pilat of Pounce, iustice. [verse 3] Thanne Judas that bitraiede hym, say that he was dampned, he repentide, and brouȝte aȝen the thretti pans [penis S.] to the princis of prestis, and to the elder men [verse 4] of the puple, and seide, Y haue synned, bitraiynge riȝtful blood. And thei seiden, What to vs? bise thee. [verse 5] And whanne he hadde cast forth the siluer in [in to K.] the temple, he passide forth, and ȝede, and hongide hym silf with a snare. [verse 6] And the princis of prestis token the siluer, and seide, It is not leueful to putte it in to the tre|serie,

for it is the prijs of blood. [verse 7] And whanne thei hadden take counsel, thei bouȝten with it a feeld of a potter, in to biryyng of pilgrymys. [verse 8] Herfor thilke [this A.] feeld is clepid Acheldemac, that is, a feeld of blood, in to this dai. [verse 9] Thanne that [it K.] was fulfillid, that was seid bi the prophete Jeremye, seiynge, And thei han takun thretti pans, the prijs of a man preysid, whom thei preiseden of the chil|dren [verse 10] of Israel; and thei ȝauen hem in to a feeld of a potter, as the Lord hath or|denyd to me. [verse 11] And Jhesus stood bifor the domesman; and the iustice axide him, and seide, Art thou king of Jewis? Jhesus seith to hym, Thou seist. [verse 12] And whanne he was accusid of the princis [prince CR.] of prestis, and of the eldere men of the puple, he answeride no thing. [verse 13] Thanne Pilat seith to him, Herist thou not, hou many witnessyngis [thingis C.] thei seien aȝens thee? [verse 14] And he answeride not `to hym [hym to ACQg.] ony word, so that the iustice wondride greetli. [verse 15] But for a solempne dai the iustice was wont to [for to C.] delyuere to the puple oon boundun [in boundis I.] , whom thei wolden. [verse 16] And he hadde tho a famous [ether noble K marg.] man boundun, that was seid Barrabas [Barrabas, which for manslauȝtir was put into prisoun EP sec. m. marg.] . [verse 17] Therfor Pilate seide to hem, whanne thei weren to gidere, Whom wolen ȝe, that Y delyuere to [Om. S pr. m. e pr. m.] ȝou? whether Barabas, or Jhesu, that is seid Crist? [verse 18] For he wiste, that bi enuye thei bitraieden hym. [verse 19] And while he sat for domesman [ether iustice K marg.] , his wijf sente to hym, and seide, No thing to thee and to that iust man; for Y haue suffrid this dai many thingis for hym, bi a visioun. [verse 20] Forsothe the prince [princis KSghiβ.] of prestis, and the eldere men counseiliden [ether entiseden K marg.] the puple, that thei schul|den axe Barabas, but thei schulden di|strye

Jhesu. [verse 21] But the iustice answeride, and seide to hem, Whom of the tweyn wolen ȝe, that be delyuerit to ȝou? And thei seiden, Barabas. [verse 22] Pilat seith to hem, What thanne schal Y do of Jhesu, that is seid Crist? [verse 23] Alle [Alle thei Iα.] seien [seiden R sec. m. β.] , `Be he [to be C.] cruci|fied. The iustice seith to hem, What yuel hath he doon? And thei crieden more, and seiden, Be he crucified. [verse 24] And Pilat seynge that he profitide no thing, but that the [Om. C.] more noyse was maad, took [and took ACbc. he took k.] watir, and waischide hise hondis bifor the puple, and seide, Y am giltles of the blood of this riȝtful man; bise ȝou. [verse 25] And al the puple answeride, and seide, His blood be on vs, and on oure children. [verse 26] Thanne he deliuerede to hem Barabas, but he took to hem Jhesu scourgid, to be crucified. [verse 27] Thanne knyȝtis of the iustice token Jhesu in the moot halle, and gadriden to hym al the cum|peny `of knyȝtis [Om. EP sec. m.] . [verse 28] And thei vnclothiden hym, and diden aboute hym a reed [verse 29] mantil; and thei foldiden [foldinge EIKMPQRSUXbcghiαβ.] a coroun of thornes, and [Om. I sec. m. Q sec. m. iαβ.] putten [puttiden CKghi.] on his heed, and a rehed in his riȝt hoond; and thei knel|iden bifore hym, and scornyden hym [Om. K.] , and seiden, Heil, kyng of Jewis. [verse 30] And thei speten [spittiden Khi. spitten e.] on hym, and tooken a rehed, and smoot [smeten IU. smytiden K. smyten MS.] his heed. [verse 31] And aftir that thei hadden scorned him, thei vncloth|iden hym of the mantil, and thei cloth|iden hym with hise clothis, and ledden hym to `crucifien hym [crucifien CMPXe. crucifie IQRb pr. m. cghiαβ. to be crucified Kk.] . [verse 32] And as thei ȝeden out, thei founden a man of Cire|nen [Serenen A.] comynge fro the toun, Symont bi name; thei constreyneden hym to take

his cross. [verse 33] And thei camen in to a place that is clepid Golgatha, that is, the place of Caluarie. [verse 34] And thei ȝauen hym to drynke wyne meynd [meddlid CIXeα.] with galle; and whanne he hadde tastid, he wolde not drynke. [verse 35] And [Om. I.] aftir that thei hadden cru|cified hym, thei departiden [partiden Q.] his clothis, and kesten [kastiden Khi.] lotte, to fulfille that is seid bi the prophete, seiynge, Thei partiden [departiden EIKRgα.] to hem my clothis, and on my clooth thei kesten [kastiden Ki.] lott. [verse 36] And thei seten, and kepten [verse 37] him; and setten [thei setten I. settiden i.] aboue his heed his cause writun, This is Jhesu of Nazareth, kyng of Jewis. [verse 38] Thanne twey [two R.] theues weren crucified with hym, oon on the riȝthalf, and oon on the lefthalf. [verse 39] And men that passiden forth blasfemeden [verse 40] hym, mouynge her heedis, and seiynge, Vath [that is, fiȝ e marg.] to thee, that distriest the temple of God, and in the thridde dai bildist it aȝen; saue thou thi silf; if thou art the sone of God, come doun of the cross [cros, and we bileuen to thee EP sec. m. marg.] . [verse 41] Also and princis of prestis scornynge, [verse 42] with scribis and elder men, seiden, He made [hath maad I.] othere men saaf, he may not make hym silf saaf; if he is kyng of Israel, come he now [Om. C.] doun fro the crosse, and [verse 43] we bileuen to hym; he tristide in God; delyuer he hym now, if he wole; for he seide, That Y am Goddis sone. [verse 44] And the theues, that weren crucified with hym, vpbreididen [vpbraiden R.] hym of the same thing. [verse 45] But fro the sixte our derknessis weren maad on al the erthe, to [til Ibα.] the nynthe our. [verse 46] And aboute the nynthe our Jhesus criede with a greet vois, and seide, Heli, Heli, lamazabatany, that is, My God, my God, whi hast thou forsake me? [verse 47] And sum|men [summe C.] that stoden there, and herynge,

seiden, This clepith Helye. [verse 48] And anoon oon of hem rennynge, took and fillide a spounge with [of K.] vynegre, and puttide [putt R.] on a rehed, and ȝaf to hym to drynke. [verse 49] But othir seiden, Suffre thou; se we [Om. K.] whether Helie come to deliuer hym. [verse 50] Forsothe Jhesus eftsoone criede [criynge g.] with a greet voyce, and ȝaf vp the goost. [verse 51] And lo! the veil of the temple was to-rent in [into hi.] twey [two R.] parties, fro the hiest to the lowest. And the erthe schoke, and stoonus [the stoones K.] weren cloue; [verse 52] and birielis weren openyd, and many bodies of seyntis that hadden slepte, rysen [risiden C.] vp. [verse 53] And thei ȝeden out of her birielis, and aftir his resurreccioun thei camen in to the holi citee, and apperiden to many. [verse 54] And the centurien and thei that weren with hym kepinge Jhesu, whanne thei saien the erthe schakynge, and tho thingis that weren doon, thei [verse 55] dredden greetli, and seiden, Verili this was Goddis sone. And ther weren there many wymmen afer, that sueden Jhesu fro Galilee, and mynystriden to hym. [verse 56] Among whiche [the whiche Iα.] was Marie Magdalene, and Marie, the modir of James, and of Joseph, and the modir of Zebedees sones. [verse 57] But whanne the euenyng was come, ther cam a riche man of Armathi, Joseph bi name, and he was a disciple of Jhesu. [verse 58] He [And he R.] wente to Pilat, and axide the bodi of Jhesu. [verse 59] Thanne Pilat co|maundide the bodie to be ȝouun. And whanne the bodi was takun, Joseph lap|pide [verse 60] it in a clene sendel, and leide it in his newe biriel, that he hadde hewun in a stoon; and he walewide a greet stoon to the dore of the biriel, and wente awei. [verse 61] But Marie Maudelene and anothir Marie weren there, sittynge aȝens the sepulcre.

[verse 62] And on `the tother [that oothir I.] dai, that is aftir pask euen, the [Om. A.] princis of prestis and the [Om. K.] [verse 63] Farisees camen togidere to Pilat, and seiden, Sir, we han mynde, that thilke giloure seide ȝit lyuynge, Aftir thre daies Y schal rise aȝen to lijf. [verse 64] Therfor co|maunde thou, that the sepulcre be kept in to the thridde dai; lest hise disciplis comen, and stelen hym, and seie to the puple, He hath rise [risen aȝen R.] fro deeth; and the laste errour schal be worse than the for|mere. [verse 65] Pilat seide to hem, Ȝe han the kepyng; go ȝe, kepe ȝe [Om. IKα.] as ȝe kunnen. [verse 66] And thei ȝeden forth, and kepten the sepulcre, markynge [ether seelinge K marg.] the stoon, with keperis.
