CAP. XXIII.

[verse 1] Thanne Jhesus spac to the puple, and [verse 2] to hise disciplis, and seide, On the chayere of Moises, scribis and Farisees han sete. [verse 3] Therfor kepe ȝe, and do ȝe alle thingis, what euer thingis thei seien to you. But nyle ȝe [Om. R pr. m.] do aftir her werkis; for thei seien, and don not. [verse 4] And thei bynden greuouse chargis, and that moun not be borun, and putten on schuldris of men; but with her fyngur thei wolen not moue hem. [verse 5] Therfor thei don alle her werkis `that thei [to K.] be seen of men; for thei drawen abrood her filateries [that ben smale scrowis K marg.] , and mag|nifien hemmes. [verse 6] And thei louen the first sittyng placis in soperis, and the first [verse 7] chaieris in synagogis; and salutaciouns

in chepyng, and to be clepid of men maystir [maistris C.] . [verse 8] But [Forsoth C.] nyle ȝe be clepid mais|ter; for oon is ȝoure maystir, and alle ȝe ben britheren. [verse 9] And nyle ȝe [Om. A.] clepe to ȝou a fadir on erthe, for oon is ȝour fadir, that is in heuenes. [verse 10] Nether be ȝe clepid maistris, for oon is ȝoure maister, Crist. [verse 11] He that is grettest among ȝou, schal be ȝoure mynystre. [verse 12] For he that hieth him|self, schal be mekid; and he that mekith hym silf, schal be enhaunsid. [verse 13] But wo to ȝou, scribis and Farisees, ipocritis, that closen the kyngdom of heuenes bifore men; and ȝe entren not, nether suffren men [othir men C.] entrynge to [for to KRghiβ.] entre. [verse 14] Wo to ȝou, scribis and Farisees, ipocritis, that eten the housis of widowis, and preien bi longe preier [preyeris A pr. m.] ; for this thing ȝe schulen take more [the more IKR sec. m. X sec. m. kα.] doom. [verse 15] Wo to ȝou, scribis and Farisees, ypocritis, that goon aboute the see and the loond, to make o [a Rb.] prosilite [proselite, that is, conuerted to ȝour [her k] ordre KX sec. m. kβ.] ; and whanne he is maad, ȝe maken hym a sone of helle, double more than ȝe ben. [verse 16] Wo to ȝou, blynde lederis, that seien, Who euer swerith bi the temple of God, it is `no thing [nouȝt I.] ; but he that swerith in the gold of the temple, is dettoure. [verse 17] Ȝe foolis and blynde, for what is grettere, the gold, or the temple that halewith the gold? [verse 18] And who euer swerith in the auter, it is no thing; but he that swer|ith in the ȝifte that is on the auter, ow|ith. [verse 19] Blynde men, for what is more, the ȝifte, or the auter that halewith the ȝifte? [verse 20] Therfor he that swerith in the auter, swerith in it, and in alle thingis that ben ther on. [verse 21] And he that swerith in the temple, swerith in it, and in hym that dwellith in the temple. [verse 22] And he that swerith in heuene, swerith in the trone

of God, and in hym that sittith ther on. [verse 23] Wo to ȝou, scribis and Farisees, ypo|critis, that tithen mynte, anete, and cum|myn, and han left tho thingis that ben of more charge of the lawe, doom, and merci, and feith. And it bihofte to do these thingis, and not to leeue tho. [verse 24] Blynde lederis, clensinge a [the S.] gnatte, but swolewynge a [the C.] camel. [verse 25] Woo to ȝou, scribis and Farisees, ypocritis, that clen|sen the cuppe and the [Om. A sec. m. CEIPQR pr. m. ceβ.] plater with out|forth; but with ynne ȝe ben ful of ra|ueyne and vnclennesse. [verse 26] Thou blynde Farisee, clense [clense rather A sec. m. clense firste Ke sec. m.] the cuppe and the plater with ynneforth, that that [that thing A sec. m. I sec. m. e. Om. EMRUbcghikαβ.] that is with outforth be maad clene. [verse 27] Wo to ȝou, scribis and Farisees, ipocritis, that ben lijk to [Om. KS pr. m. b pr. m. ghi.] sepulcris whitid, whiche with outforth semen faire to men; but with ynne thei ben fulle of boonus of deed men, and of al filthe. [verse 28] So ȝe with out|forth semen iust to men; but with ynne ȝe ben ful of ypocrisy and [and of I.] wickidnesse. [verse 29] Wo to ȝou, scribis and Farisees, ipocritis, that bilden sepulcris of profetis, and [verse 30] maken faire the birielis of iust men, and seien, If we hadden be in the daies of oure fadris, we schulden not haue be her felowis in the blood of prophetis. [verse 31] And so ȝe ben in witnessyng to ȝou silf, that ȝe ben the sones of hem that slowen the prophetis. [verse 32] And fulfille [fille b.] ȝe [Om. S.] the mesure of ȝoure fadris. [verse 33] Ȝe eddris [that is, buriownyng of eddris, that sleen her modris. K marg.] , and eddris briddis, hou schulen ȝe fle fro the doom of helle? [verse 34] Therfor lo! Y sende to ȝou profetis, and wise men, and scribis; and of hem ȝe schulen sle and crucifie, and of hem ȝe schulen scourge in ȝoure sina|gogis, and schulen pursue fro cite in to [verse 35] citee; that al the iust blood come on

ȝou, that was sched on the erthe, fro the blood of iust Abel to the blood of Zaca|rie, the sone of Barachie, whom ȝe slowen bitwixe the temple and the auter. [verse 36] Treuli Y seie to ȝou, alle these thingis schulen come on this generacioun. [verse 37] Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that sleest prophetis, and stoonest hem that ben sent to thee, hou ofte wolde Y gadere togidere thi chil|dren, as an henne gaderith togidir her chikenes vndir hir wengis, and thou woldist not. [verse 38] Lo! ȝoure hous schal be left to ȝou desert. [verse 39] And Y seie to ȝou, ȝe schulen not se me fro hennus forth, til ȝe seien, Blessid is he, that cometh in the name of the Lord.
