CAP. XVIII.

[verse 1] In that our the [Om. M.] disciplis camen [camen nyȝ KM. pr. m.] to Jhesu, and seiden, Who, gessist thou, is gretter [greet CR. this grettere Q.] in the kyngdom of heuenes? [verse 2] And Jhesus clepide a litil child, and putte [verse 3] hym in the myddil of hem; and seide, Y seie treuthe to ȝou, but ȝe be turned, and maad as litle children, ȝe schulen not entre in to the kyngdom of heuenes. [verse 4] Therfor who euer mekith hym as this litil child, he is gretter [greet C.] in the kyngdom of heuenes. [verse 5] And he that resseyueth o siche litil child in my name, resseyueth me. [verse 6] But who so sclaundrith oon of these smale, that bileuen in me, it spedith to hym that a mylnstoon `of assis [Om. A pr. m. QC.] be hang|id in his necke, and he be drenchid in the depnesse of the see. [verse 7] Woo to the world, for sclaundris; for [forsothe I.] it is nede that

sclaundris come; netheles wo to thilke man bi whom a [Om. CEI.] sclaundre cometh. [verse 8] And if thin hoond or thi foot sclaundreth [sclaundre CXik.] thee, kitte it of, and caste [caste it KM pr. m.] awei fro thee. It is betere to thee to entre to lijf feble, ethir crokid, than hauynge tweyne hoondis or twey feet to be sent in to euerlastynge fier. [verse 9] And if thin iȝe sclaundre [sclaundrith KM.] thee, pulle it out, and caste [caste it CK.] awei fro thee. It is betere to thee with oon iȝe to entre in to lijf, thanne hau|ynge tweyn iȝen to be sent in to the fier of helle. [verse 10] Se ȝe, that ȝe dispise not oon of these litle. For Y seie to ȝou, that the aungels of hem in heuenes seen euermore the face of my fadir that is in heuenes. [verse 11] For mannus sone cam to [for to C.] saue that thing that perischide. [verse 12] What semeth to ȝou? If ther weren to sum [a I.] man an hundrid scheep, and oon of hem hath errid, whe|thir [wher ceteri.] he schal not leeue nynti and nyne in desert, and schal go to [and K.] seche that that erride? [verse 13] And if it falle that he fynde it, treuli Y seie to ȝou, that he schal haue ioye theron [thereof Iα.] more than on [of Cb.] nynti and nyne that erriden not. [verse 14] So it is not the wille bifor [of K.] ȝoure fadir that is in heuenes, that oon of these litle perische. [verse 15] But if thi brother synneth aȝens thee, go thou, and repreue hym, bitwixe thee and hym aloone; if [and if Kk.] he herith thee, thou hast wonnun thi brother. [verse 16] And if he herith thee not, take with thee oon or tweyne, that euery word stonde in the mouth of tweyne or thre witnessis. [verse 17] And if he herith [here i.] not hem, seie thou to the chirche. But [And I.] if he herith [here EQRcβ.] not the chirche, be he as an hethen [hethene man CKR sec. m. b pr. m. ghi pr. m. β.] and [or b.] a [Om. Iabc.] pupplican to thee. [verse 18] Y seie to ȝou treuli, what euer thingis [thing R.] ȝe

bynden on erthe, tho schulen be boundun also in heuene [heuenes R pr. m.] ; and what euer thingis ȝe vnbynden on erthe, tho schulen be vn|boundun also in heuene. [verse 19] Eftsoone Y seie to ȝou, that if tweyne of ȝou consenten on the [Om. C.] erthe, of euery thing what euer thei axen, it schal be don to hem of my fadir that is in heuenes. [verse 20] For where tweyne or thre ben gaderid in my name, there Y am in the myddil of hem. [verse 21] Thanne Petre cam to hym, and seide, Lord, how ofte schal my brother synne aȝens me, and Y schal forȝyue hym? [verse 22] Whether til seuen tymes? Jhesus seith to hym, Y seie not to thee, til seuene sithis; but til seuenti sithis seuene sithis. [verse 23] Therfor the kyngdom of heuenes is lic|ned to a kyng [man kyng R.] , that wolde rekyn with hise seruauntis. [verse 24] And whanne he bigan to rekene [for to putte resoun b sec. m. α.] , oon that ouȝte [ouȝte to hym b sec. m. α.] ten thousynde talentis, was brouȝt [offrid Qb sec. m. α.] to hym [Verse 24 omitted in Eb pr. m.] . [verse 25] And whanne he hadde not wherof to [he shulde K.] ȝelde, his lord comaundide hym to be seld, and his wijf, and children, and alle thingis that he hadde, and to be paied. [verse 26] But thilke seruaunt felde doun, and preiede hym, and seide, Haue pacience in me, and Y schal ȝelde to thee alle thingis. [verse 27] And the lord hadde merci on that ser|uaunt, and suffride hym to [Om. ceteri et αβ.] go, and for|ȝaf to [Om. KXcghi.] hym the dette. [verse 28] But thilke ser|uaunt ȝede out, and foonde oon of his euen seruauntis, that ouȝte hym an hun|drid pens; and he [Om. A pr. m.] helde hym [Om. C.] , and stranglide hym, and seide, Ȝelde that that thou owest. [verse 29] And his euen seruaunt felle doun, and preyede hym, and seide, Haue pacience in me, and Y schal quyte

alle thingis to thee. [verse 30] But he wolde not; but wente out, and putte [puttide K.] hym in to [Om. C.] prisoun, til he paiede al the dette. [verse 31] And hise euen seruauntis, seynge the [tho Ek.] thingis that weren don, soreweden greetli. And thei camen, and telden to her lord alle the [Om. CXbek. tho E.] thingis that weren don. [verse 32] Thanne his lord clepide hym, and seide to hym, Wickid seruaunt, Y forȝaf to thee al the dette, for thou preiedist me. [verse 33] Therfor whether it bihouede [bihoueth R.] not also thee to haue merci on thin euen seruaunt, as Y hadde merci on thee? [verse 34] And his lord was wroth, and took hym to turmentouris, til he paiede al the dette. [verse 35] So my fadir of heuene schal do to ȝou, if ȝe forȝyuen not euery [ech C.] man to his brother, of ȝoure hertes.
