[verse 1] And in the hundrid and sixtithe ȝeer Alisaundre, the sone of Antiok, stiede up, that is named [y-namyd F.] noble, and ocupiede Tolo|maide; and thei resseyueden hym, and he regnede there. [verse 2] And kyng Demetrie herde, and gaderide an oost ful copiouse, and wente out aȝens hym in to batel. [verse 3] And Demetrie sente epistle to Jonathas with pesible wordis, for to magnefie hym. [verse 4] For

he seide, Bifore take we for to make pees with hym, bifore that he make with Ali|saundre aȝens vs; for he schal haue mynde [verse 5] of [on F.] alle yuels, that we han don `aȝens him, and [Om. I.] aȝens his brother, and aȝens his folc. [verse 6] And he ȝaf to hym power to [for to C pr. m. I.] gadere oost, and for to make armeris, and hym for to be his felowe. And he comaundide ostagis, `ether pleggis [Om. CER.] , that weren in the hiȝ tour, for to be ȝouun to hym. [verse 7] And Jonathas cam in to Jerusalem, and radde epistlis, in heryng of al the puple, and of hem that weren in the hiȝ tour. [verse 8] And thei dred|den with greet drede, for thei herden, that [Om. R.] the kyng ȝaf to [Om. I.] hym power to ga|dere an oost. [verse 9] And ostagis [ostagis, ether pleggis FGH MNQSUe.] weren takun [bitake CEFGHIKMNPQSUXe.] to Jonathas, and he ȝeldide hem [Om. N.] to her fadris and modris. [verse 10] And Jonathas dwelte in Jerusalem, and bigan for to bilde and renule the citee. [verse 11] And he seide to men doynge werkis, that thei schulden make up the wallis, and the hil of Sion in cum|pas, with square stonys to strengthing; and thei diden so. [verse 12] And aliens fledden, that weren in the strengthis, whiche Ba|chides [verse 13] hadde bildid; and ech man lefte his place, and wente in to his lond. [verse 14] Oneli in Bethsura dwelten sum of hem, that forsoken the lawe and heestis [the heestis CEFRS.] of God; for whi this was to hem to [the R.] refuyte. [verse 15] And Alisaundre the kyng herde biheestis, that Demetrie bihiȝte to Jonathas, and thei telden to hym the [Om. I.] batels and vertues whiche he dide, and his britheren, and the [Om. R.] trauelis whiche thei traueliden. [verse 16] And he seide, Whether we schulen fynde ony such man? And now make we hym our frende and felowe. [verse 17] And he wroot epistle, [verse 18] and sente bi these wordis, seiynge, Kyng Alisaundre to Jonathas, brother, helthe. [verse 19] We han herde of thee, that thou art a miȝti man in strengthis, and art able that thou be oure frend. [verse 20] And now we or|deynen thee to dai hiȝest prest of thi folc, and that thou be clepid frend of the

kyng. And he sente to hym purpur, and a goldun coroun, that thou feele with vs what thingis ben oure, and kepe fren|schipis to vs. [verse 21] And Jonathas clothide hym with hooly [an hooly I.] stoole, in the seuenthe mo|nethe, in the hundrid and sixtithe [fourtithe N.] ȝeer, in the solempne dai of Senofegie. And [Om. N.] he gaderide an ooste, and made copiouse [plenteuouse EP.] ar|meris. [verse 22] And Demetrie herde these wordis, and was maad ful sorewful, and seide, [verse 23] What han we do this thing, that Ali|saundre bifor ocupiede vs, for to catche frenschip of Jewis to his strengthing? [verse 24] And Y schal write to hym preiynge wordis, and dignitees, and ȝiftis, that he be with me in help. [verse 25] And he wroot to hym by these wordis, Kyng Demetrie to the folc of Jewis, helthe. [verse 26] For ȝe kepten to vs couenaunt, and dwelten in oure frenschip, and wenten not [out N.] to oure ene|myes, we herden, and ioieden. [verse 27] And [Om. A.] now [verse 28] laste ȝe ȝit for to kepe to vs feith; and we schulen quyte to ȝou good thingis, for these thingis that ȝe diden with [to I.] vs, and we schulen forȝyue to ȝou many rentis [ȝeuynges R. ȝyuyngis, ether [or EPY] rentis C et ceteri.] , and we schulen ȝyue ȝiftis to ȝou. [verse 29] And now Y asoile ȝou, and alle Jewis, of tri|butis, and Y [Om. A.] forȝyue to ȝou the prices of salt, and forȝyue corouns, and the thridde [verse 30] part of seed; and Y leeue to ȝou fro this dai and afterward the half part of fruyt of tre [the tree I.] , that is of my porcioun, tha tit be not takun of the lond of Juda, and of thre citees that ben addid therto, of Samarie and Galile, fro this dai and in to al tyme. [verse 31] And Jerusalem be hooli, and fre, with hise coostis; and tithis and tributis be of it. [verse 32] Also Y forȝiue the power of the hiȝ tour, that is in Jerusalem; and Y ȝyue it to the hiȝest [hiȝe R.] prest, that he ordeyne therynne men, whiche euere he schal chese, that schulen kepe it. [verse 33] And ech persoone of Jewis, that is caitif of the lond of Juda, in [and in N.] al my rewme, Y delyuer fre wilfuli [wilfuli R. wilfuli, or [ether X] without money C et ceteri.] ,

that alle be soilid of her tributis, ȝhe, of her beestis. [verse 34] And alle solempne daies, and sabatis, and neomenyes, and alle daies or|deyned, and thre daies bifor the solempne dai, and thre daies after the solempne dai, alle these be daies of fraunchise [[inm] unite R. inmunite, ether [or EPY] fraunchise C et ceteri, præter e.] , and of remissioun, to alle Jewis that ben in my rewme. [verse 35] And no man schal haue power for to do ony thing, and moue causis [nedis R. nedis, ether [or EPYe] causis C et ceteri.] aȝens ony of hem in ony cause. [verse 36] And that ther be writun of Jewis in the kingis oost, to thritti thousyndis of men; and plentees schulen be ȝouun to hem, as it bihoueth to alle oostis of the kyng. [verse 37] And of hem schulen be ordeyned, that be in the [Om. R.] greet strengthis of the kyng; of hem schulen [verse 38] be ordeyned ouer nedis of the rewme, that ben don of feith, and princes be of hem; and walke thei in her lawis, as the kyng comaundide in the lond of Juda. And thre citees, that ben addid to Judee of the cun|tre of Samarie, be demyd [arettid ER. arettid, ether [or e] demyd C et ceteri.] with Judee; that thei be vndur oon, and obeie not to other [verse 39] power, no but to the hiȝeste prest; Tolo|maida, and coostis [the coostis I.] therof, whiche Y haue ȝouun a ȝifte to hooli men that ben in Jerusalem, to nedeful costis of seyntis. [verse 40] And Y schal ȝyue in ech ȝeer fiftene thou|synde of siclis of siluer, of the kyngis re|souns, [verse 41] that perteynen to me; and al that is residue, which thei that weren ouer nedis ȝeldiden not in formere ȝeeris, fro this tyme thei schulen ȝyue in to werkis [the werkis I.] of the hous. [verse 42] And ouer this fyue thou|synde siclis of siluer, whiche thei token of resoun of hooli thingis bi ech ȝeer; and these thingis schulen perteyne to prestis, that vsen mynysterie. [verse 43] And who euere schulen fle to the temple that is in Jeru|salem, and in alle coostis therof, and ben gilti to the king in ony cause, be releesid [dismittid R. dismyttid, ether [or EPY] releesid C et ceteri.] ; and haue thei fre alle thingis, that ben to hem in my rewme. [verse 44] And to bilde [bilde, ether [or EPYe] restore C et ceteri præter R.] werkis of hooli thingis, costis [costis, ether [or e] spensis FGHIMNQSUXe.] schulen be ȝouun [verse 45] of the kyngis rent [resoun R. resoun, ether [or EPY] rente C et ceteri, præter e.] , and for to bilde out

the wallis of Jerusalem; and for to make strong in cumpas, spensis schulen be ȝouun of the kyngis rent [resoun C et ceteri. resoun, ether rente e.] , for to make out wallis in Judee. [verse 46] As Jonathas and the puple herde these wordis, thei bileu|eden not to hem, nether resseyueden hem; for thei hadden mynde of the greet malice that he hadde don in Israel, and hadde troblid hem greetli. [verse 47] And it pleside to|gidere to hem in to [Om. N.] Alisaundre, for he was to hem prince of wordis of pees, and to hym thei baren help in alle daies. [verse 48] And kyng Alisaundre gaderide a greet oost, and mouyde tentis aȝens Demetrie. [verse 49] And the kyngis ioyneden batel, and the oost of Demetrie fledde; and Alisaundre pursuede [verse 50] him, and lai on hem [him R.] ; and the batel was ful strong, til the sunne wente doun, and Demetrie felle [felde CI et alii.] in that dai. [verse 51] And Ali|saundre sente to Tolome, king of Egipt, [verse 52] legatis bi these wordis, and seide, For Y cam aȝen in to my rewme, and sat in the [Om. ceteri.] seete of my fadris; and Y haue weldid princehod, and Y haue al to-brokun Deme|trie, [verse 53] and [Y A. and Y H.] haue weldid oure cuntrei; and Y haue ioyned fiȝt with hym, and he and his oostis ben al to-foulid of vs, and we saten in seete [the seete I.] of his rewme. [verse 54] And now ordeyne we togidere frenschip, and ȝyue thi douȝter a wijf to me, and Y schal be thi douȝter hosebonde; and Y schal ȝyue to thee ȝiftis, and to hir dignytee. [verse 55] And `Tolome, kyng [kyng Tolome F.] , answeride, seiynge, Blessid is [be R.] the dai in which thou turnedist aȝen to the lond of thi fadris, and hast sotun in the seete of rewme [the rewme R.] of hem. [verse 56] And now Y schal do to thee whiche thingis thou hast writun; but come thou aȝens me to Tolomaida, that we se vs togidere, and Y biheete to thee, as thou seidist. [verse 57] And Tolome wente out of Egipt, he, and Cleo|patra, his douȝter; and he cam to Tolo|maida, in the hundrid and two and six|tithe ȝeer. [verse 58] And Alisaundre, the king, came to hym; and he ȝaf to hym Cleo|patra, his douȝtir, and made his weddingis

at Tolomaida, as kyngis in greet glorie. [verse 59] And kyng Alisaundre wroot to Jonathas, that he schulde come aȝens hym. [verse 60] And he wente with glorie to Tolomaida, and mette there twei [to twei A pr. m. CEF pr. m. HRUe.] kyngis, and ȝaue to hem myche [Om. N.] siluer, and gold, and ȝiftis; and foond grace in the siȝte of hem. [verse 61] And men of Israel, ful of venym, camen togidere aȝens hym, wickid men, axynge aȝens hym, and the kyng took no [not N.] tent to [verse 62] hem; and comaundide Jonathas for to be maad nakid of his clothis, and hym for to be clothid in purpur; and thei diden so. And the king settide hym for to sitte with [verse 63] hym, and seide to hise princis, Go ȝe out with hym in to the myddil of the citee, and preche ȝe, that no man axe aȝens hym of ony cause [nede R. nede, ether [or EPY] cause C et ceteri.] , nether ony man be heuy to hym of ony resoun. [verse 64] And it was don, as thei that [Om. I.] axiden sien [thei sauȝen I.] his glorie that was prechid, and hym kyuered with purpur, alle fledden. [verse 65] And the kyng magnefiede hym, and wroot hym among the firste frendis, and puttide hym duyk, and felow [partener R. partener, [parcener alii] ether [or EPY] felowe C et ceteri.] of prinshod. [verse 66] And Jonathas turnede aȝen in to Jerusalem, with pees and gladnesse. [verse 67] In the hundrid ȝeer and fyue and sixtithe, Demetrie, the sone of Demetrie, cam fro Crete in to the lond of his fadris. [verse 68] And kyng Alisaundre herde, and was maad ful soreuful, and turnede aȝen to Antiochie. [verse 69] And Demetrie ordeynede Appolyne duyk, that was souereyn of Celesirie; and he gaderide his greet oost, and cam to Jam|nam; and sente to Jonathas, hiȝeste [the hiȝeste I.] prest, [verse 70] and seide, Thou aloone aȝenstondist vs; Y am maad in to scorn and schenschip therfor, for thou hauntist power in hillis aȝens vs. [verse 71] Now therfor if thou tristist in thi vertues, come doun to vs in to the feeld; and there asemble we [we vs N.] togidere, for with me is vertu of batels. [verse 72] Axe thou, and lerne who Y am, and othere that ben in help to me, and whiche seien, that ȝoure foot may not stonde aȝens oure face, for

thi fadris weren conuertid in to [Om. N.] fliȝt twies in to her lond. [verse 73] And now hou schalt thou mow susteyne multitude of horse men, and so greet oost in the feeld, where is no stoon, ne rocke, nether place of fle|ynge [strengthing I.] ? [verse 74] Sotheli as Jonathas herde these [the R.] wordis of Appollonye, he was mouyd in herte; and he chees ten thousynde of [Om. R.] men, and wente out fro Jerusalem, and Symount, his brother, cam to hym in to [Om. R.] help. [verse 75] And thei applieden tentis in [to R.] Joppe, and it [Om. E.] [that is, the peple of Joppe. Lire here. U.] schittide out hym fro the citee, for Joppe was the keping of Appolyne; and he [that is, Jo|nathas fauȝt aȝens Joppe. U.] fouȝte aȝens it. [verse 76] And thei weren agast, that weren with ynne the citee, and openyden to hym; and Jonathas weldide Joppe. [verse 77] And Appolyne herde, and mouyde thre thousynde of horse men, and myche [verse 78] oost; and wente to Asotus, as makynge weie. And anoon he wente out in to the feeld, for that he hadde multitude of horse men, and tristnyde [tristede EIP. he tristnede R.] in hem; and Jonathas suede hym in to Asotus, and thei ioyneden batel. [verse 79] And Appoloyne lefte in tentis a thousynde horse men bihynde hem pri|ueli. [verse 80] And Jonathas knewe that busche|mentis weren bihynde hym, and thei enui|rowneden his tentis, and castiden dartis in to the puple, fro morew [the morwe R.] til to [Om. U.] euentid. [verse 81] Forsothe the puple stood, as Jonathas comaundide, and the horsis of hem trauel|iden out. [verse 82] And Symount ledde [ledde out R.] his oost, and ioynede aȝens the legioun; forsothe horse men weren maad weri, and weren al to-brokun of hym, and fledden. [verse 83] And thei that weren scaterid in to [Om. R.] the feeld, fledden in to Asotus; and entriden in to the hous of Dagon, her idol, that there thei schulden delyuere hem silf. [verse 84] And Jonathas brente Asotus, and citees that weren in cumpas therof, and took spuylis of hem; and he brente in fier the temple of Dagon, and hem that fledden in to it. [verse 85] And ther weren that fellen bi swerd with hem that weren brent, almeste eiȝte thou|synde

of [Om. R.] men. [verse 86] And fro thennus Jona|thas mouyde [turnede R.] tentis, and appliede hem to Ascalon; and thei wenten out of the citee aȝens hym in greet glorie. [verse 87] And Jonathas turnede aȝen in [Om. R.] to Jerusalem with hise men, hauynge many spuylis. [verse 88] And it was don, as king Alisaundre herde these wordis, he puttide to ȝit for to glorifie Jonathas. [verse 89] And he sente to hym a goldun lace, `ether nouche [Om. R.] , as custom is for [Om. F.] to be ȝouun to cosyns of kingis; and he ȝaf to him Accoron, and alle coostis therof in to [Om. R.] possessioun.
