[verse 1] Aftir these thingis Joob openyde his [verse 2] mouth, and curside [he curside I.] his dai, and seide [he seide I.] , [verse 3] Perische the dai [Perische the day; Greg. in iiii. book of Morals seith, that Joob spek|ith in parable, ethir to goostly vndurstonding, and not to the lettre; for many wordis here takun to the lettre ben vnresonable and vnpossible, and of a man vnpacient and dispeiringe, and blasfemynge God; but Joob was not siche a man, as God witnessith in the ende. Ne|theles Tomas Alquyn here expowneth this proces to the lettre, and seith, that Joob spekith here aftir the sen|sualite, ether fleisly lust, and bi the resoun of soule he suf|fride wilfully and paciently his disese. But for it sueth herof that Joob and hise frendis disputiden to dyuerse wittis, and not to the purpos, therfor it may be seid betere, that these frendis settiden pu|nysching only for synne passid, and re|warding onely in this liyf for goode werkis passid. Therfor Joob argueth aȝenus hem, that it sueth of her errour, that Joob schulde skilefuly curse the day of his birthe, and othere thingis, as the text sowneth, and Joob spekith of day passid, bi wordis of tyme to com|ynge, but in truth Joob curside not his day of birthe, but paciently suffride his disese, and held riȝtful sentence, as God wit|nessith in the ende. [verse 4] Thilke dai be turnede in to derknessis; God seke not it aboue, and be it not in mynde [This word, be not in mynde, is not in Ebreu, nether in bokis amendid. Lire here. [verse 5] Derknessis [Derkenes S.] make [make thei I.] it derk, and the schadewe of deeth and myist [of myist I.] oc|cupie it; and be it wlappid [wrappid S.] with bittir|nesse. [verse 6] Derk whirlwynde holde that niȝt; be it not rikynyd among the [Om. I.] daies of the ȝeer, nethir be it noumbrid among the [Om. S.] monethes. [verse 7] Thilke nyȝt be soleyn, and not [be it not I.] worthi of [Om. I.] preisyng. [verse 17] There wickid men ceessiden of noise, and there men maad wery of strengthe restiden. [verse 18] And sum tyme boundun [men bounden I.] togidere with out disese thei herden not the voys of the wrongful axere. [verse 19] A litil man and greet [a greet I.] man be [be he I.] there, and a seruaunt [seruaunt be he there I.] free [fer B.] fro his lord. [verse 20] Whi is liȝt ȝouun to the wretche, and lijf to hem that ben in bitternesse of soule? [verse 21] Whiche [The whiche I.] abiden deeth, and it cometh not; [verse 22] as men diggynge [that diggen I.] out tresour and ioien greetly, whanne thei han founde a sepul|cre? [verse 23] Whi is liȝt ȝouun to a man, whos weie is hid, and God hath cumpassid hym with derknessis? [verse 24] Bifore that Y ete, Y siȝhe; and as of watir flowynge, so is my roryng. [verse 25] For [Certis I.] the drede, which [that I.] Y dredde, cam [hath come I.] to me; and that [that thing I.] , that Y schamede, bifelde [hath bifalle to me I.] . [verse 26] Whether Y dissymilide [feynyde I.] not? whether Y was not stille? whether Y restide not? and [and ȝitt I.] indignacioun cometh [hath comen I.] on me.
