CDNOV.] men, herkne [herke I.] ȝe me; [verse 3] for [forsothe I.] the eere preueth wordis, and the throte demeth metis [mete CS.] bi taast. [verse 4] Chese we doom to vs; and se we among vs, what [what thing I.] is the [Om. I.] betere [betere than oother I.] . [verse 5] For Job [thou, Job A pr. m. S.] seide [seidest A pr. m. S.] , Y am iust, and God hath distried [turned I.] my doom [iustnesse upsodoun I.] [God hath distried my doom; Helyu took this of that, that Joob seide, God hath take awey my doom, and in this he rehers|ide Joob falsly, for Joob seide not this of his owne persoone, but as conclud|inge this of the seiyngis of his aduersaries. And thouȝ Joob hadde seid this of his owne per|soone, ȝit He|lyu reportide him falsly; for other thing is to distrie doom, other thing is to take awey doom; for whi to distrie doom is euere yuel, and may not be doon wel, and therfor it may not bifalle to God; but to take awey doom, is not ellis no but to use not doom, and this may wel be doon, whanne the iuge vsith mersy and not rigour. And therfor what euere thing Helyu con|cludith in this c^o. aȝenus Joob, in put|tinge to him, that he seide that God is vniust, ether distriere of riȝtfulnesse, it concludith not aȝenus him. Lire here. C.] . [verse 6] For whi lesynge is in demynge me, and myn arowe [and myn arowe; that is, aduersite which Y suffre, is brouȝt in to me bi the vio|lence of God, and not bi riȝtfulnesse. [verse 7] Who is a man, as Joob is, that drynkith scornyng [scornyng, etc.; that is, scorneth with out bridil and mesure, Goddis doom. Lire here. C.] [verse 8] as watir? that [the whiche I.] goith with men worchynge wickidnesse, and [and he I.] goith [goith aboute I.] with vnfeithful men? [verse 9] For he [Job I.] seide, A man schal not plese God, ȝhe, thouȝ he renneth [renne I.] with

God. [verse 10] Therfor ȝe men [wise men I.] hertid [Om. I.] , `that is, vndurstonde [that is, vndirstondinge B. Om. IV.] , here ȝe [Om. NOSV.] me; vnpite, `ethir cruelte [Om. [verse 12] For verili God schal not condempne with out cause; nether Almyȝti God schal distrie doom [doom or riȝtwisnesse I.] . [verse 13] What othere man hath he ordeyned on [upon I.] the [Om. I.] lond [erthe I.] ? ether whom hath he set on [oother upon I.] the world, which [that I.] he made [hath made I.] ? [verse 14] If God dressith his [mannus I.] herte to hym, he schal drawe to hym silf [Om. I.] his spirit and [and his I.] blast. [verse 15] Ech fleisch schal faile togidere [togidere in diyng I.] ; and a [and aftir ech I.] man schal turne aȝen in to aisch. [verse 16] Therfor if thou [thou, Job I.] hast [haue S.] vndurstondyng, here thou that that is seid, and herkne the [thou the I.] vois of my speche. [verse 17] Whether he that loueth not doom [iust doom I.] may be maad hool? and hou [hou thanne I.] condemp|nest thou so myche him, that is iust? [verse 19] `Which takith [He acceptith I.] not the persoones of princes, nether knew [he knowith I.] a tyraunt, whanne [to spare him, whanne I.] he stryuede [stryuith I.] aȝens a pore man; for [forsothe I.] alle men ben the werk of hise hondis. [verse 20] Thei [Men I.] schulen die sudeynli, and at mydnyȝt puplis schulen be troblid [troblid ether bowid V.] , `ethir schulen be bowid, as [and as CEHLPU.] othere bookis han [Gloss om. in IVX.] ; and [and aungels I.] schulen passe, and [and thei I.] schulen take `awei [Om. S.] `a violent [the cruel I.] man with out hond [with out hond; that is, without power of aduersaries of the tyraunt. Lire here. C.] . [verse 22] No derknessis ben, and [neither I.] no schadewe of deeth is, that thei, that worchen wickid|nesse, [verse 23] be hid there [be hid there; that is, in Goddis know|ing; netheles God is seid to knowe not hem bi knowing of appreuyng. C.] . [verse 24] God schal al to-breke many men and vnnoumbrable; and [and he I.] schal make othere men to stonde for hem. [verse 25] For

he knowith the werkis of hem; therfor [and therfor S.] he schal brynge yn niȝt [niȝt upon hem I.] [nyȝt; that is, sudeyn deth. Lire here. C.] , and thei schu|len be al to-brokun. [verse 26] He smoot hem, as vnpitouse men, in the place of seinge men. [verse 27] Whiche ȝeden awei fro hym bi `castyng afore [fore castynge I.] , and nolden [wolden not I.] vndurstonde alle hise weies. [verse 28] That thei schulden make the cry of a nedi man to come to hym, and that he schulde here the vois of pore men. [verse 29] For whanne he grauntith pees [lijf I.] , who is [is it I.] that condempneth [condempnith him I.] ? Sithen [And sith I.] he hidith his cheer, who is that seeth hym? And on folkis and on alle men `he hath power [Om. B.] `to do siche thingis [Om. BV.] . [verse 30] Which [He I.] makith `a man ypocrite [an ypocrite man I.] to regne, for the synnes of the puple. [verse 31] Therfor for Y haue spoke to God, also [Om. I.] Y schal not forbede thee [thee to speke I.] . [verse 32] If Y [Y han I.] erride, teche thou me; if Y spak [haue spoke I.] wickid|nesse, Y schal no more adde [adde to I.] . [verse 33] Whether God axith that wickidnesse of thee, for it displeside thee? For [Certis I.] thou hast bigunne to speke, and not Y; that if thou knowist ony thing betere, speke thou [thou that I.] . [verse 34] Men vndur|stondynge, speke [speke thei I.] to me; and a wise man, here [here he I.] me. [verse 35] Forsothe Joob spak [hath spoke I.] folili, and hise wordis sownen not techyng [chastisyng I.] . [verse 36] My fa|dir, be Joob preuede `til to [unto I.] the ende; ceesse thou not fro the man of wickid|nesse, [verse 37] `that addith [the whiche puttith I.] blasfemye [blasfemye to God I.] ouer hise synnes. Be he constreyned among vs in the meene tyme; and [to knowe his blasfemy, and I.] thanne bi hise wordis stire he God to the [Om. I.] doom.
