CAP. XXXII.

[verse 1] Forsothe these thre men leften of to answere Joob, for he semyde a iust man to hem. [verse 2] And Helyu, the sone of Barachel Buzites, of the kynrede of Ram, was wrooth, and hadde indignacioun; forsothe [and I.] he was wrooth aȝens Joob, for he seide hym silf to be iust bifor God. [verse 3] Sotheli [Certis BCDEFHKLMNOPQRSUVWXbf. And also I.] Helyu hadde indignacioun aȝens the thre frendis of hym [Job I.] , for thei hadden not founde resonable [no resonable S.] answere, but oneli hadde [thei hadden I.] condempned Joob. [verse 4] Therfor Helyu abood Joob spekynge, for thei, that spaken, weren eldere men. [verse 5] But whanne he hadde seyn, that thre [thes thre I.] men [Om. plures.] myȝten not answere [answere Job I.] , he was wrooth greetly. [verse 6] And [And thanne I.] Helyu, the sone of Barachel Buzites, answeride, and seyde, Y am ȝongere in tyme, sotheli [and I.] ȝe

ben eldere; therfor with heed holdun doun Y dredde to schewe to ȝou my sen|tence. [verse 7] For Y hopide that lengere age schulde speke [haue spoke wisilier I.] , and that the multitude of ȝeeris schulden teche wisdom. [verse 8] But as Y se [se now a I.] , spirit is in men [spirit is in men; as reson|able in ȝonge men, as in elde men. Lire here. C.] , and the enspiryng [inspiracioun X.] `ether reuelacioun [Om. I.] , of Almyȝti [Om. I.] God ȝyueth vndurstondyng. [verse 9] Men of long lijf ben not wise, and elde men vndurstonden not doom. [verse 10] Therfor [Of verry dis|crecioun therfor I.] Y schal seie, Here ȝe me, and Y also schal schewe my kunnyng to ȝou. [verse 11] For Y abood ȝoure wordis, Y herde ȝoure prudence, as long as ȝe dispuytiden in ȝoure wordis. [verse 12] And as long as Y gesside ȝou to seie ony thing, Y bihelde; but as Y se [perceyue I.] , `noon is [ther is noon I.] of ȝou, that may repreue [verse 13] Joob, and answere to hise wordis; lest [but lest I.] perauenture ȝe seien, We han founde wis|dom; God, and not man, hath cast hym [Job I.] awei. [verse 14] Joob spak no thing to me, and [and therfor I.] Y not bi ȝoure wordis [by ȝoure wordis etc.; Helyu acordide with Joob in this, that he settide another punysching of yuel men and rewarding of good men, aftir deth, but he discordide in this, that he helde that ad|uersites of this liyf ben brouȝt in for synne, thouȝ tho ben not euere al the peyne due for synne; and so he arettide Joob vniust, and punyschid for synne; also he made strongere resouns aȝenus Joob than the thre diden. Lire here. C.] schal answere hym. [verse 15] Thei dredden, and answeriden no more [more to Job I.] , and [and thei I.] token awei speche fro hem silf. [verse 16] Therfor for [sith I.] Y abood, and thei spaken not, thei stoden, and answeriden no more; [verse 17] also [therfor I.] Y schal answere my part, and Y schal schewe my kunnyng. [verse 18] For Y am ful of wordis [ful of wordis; that is, spedeful resouns aȝenus Joob. C.] , and the spirit of my wombe, `that is, mynde [Om. I.] , constreyneth me [me to speke I.] [constreyneth me; as if he seye, The loue of truthe to be defendid, con|streyneth me to speke. Lire here. C.] . [verse 19] Lo! my wombe is as must with out `spigot, ether [Om. I. faucet ether V.] a ventyng, that brekith [berstith I.] newe vessels. [verse 20] Y schal speke, and brethe aȝen a litil; Y schal opene my lippis, and Y schal answere [answere Job I.] . [verse 21] Y [And Y S.] schal not take the persoone of [of a I.] man, and Y schal not make God euene to man. [verse 22] For Y woot not hou long Y schal abide [abide alijue I.] , and if my Makere take [wole take I.] me awei `after a [be S.] litil tyme.
