[verse 1] Forsothe Joob answeride, and seide, [verse 2] Hou long turmente ȝe my soule, and al to-breken me with wordis? [verse 3] Lo! ten sithis ȝe schenden [haue schent IS.] me [schenden me; that is, enforsen to schende me. Lire here. C.] , and ȝe ben not aschamed, oppressynge me. [verse 4] Forsothe [Certis IS.] and if Y`koude not [haue vnknowe IS.] , myn vnkynnyng schal be with me. [verse 5] And ȝe ben reisid aȝens me, and [and ȝe IS.] repreuen me with my schenschipis. [verse 6] Nameli now vndurstonde ȝe, that God hath turmentid me not bi euene doom [doom, for he sparid me S.] [God hath tur|mentid me not bi euene doom; Joob seide not this of his owne entent; but he con|cludide this of the seiyngis of hise aduersa|ries, that seiden that alle aduer|sites of this liyf ben brouȝt in of God, for peyne of synnes passid onely; and therof it sueth, that the doom of God was not euene aȝenus Joob, of whom the tur|ment passide the gilt. Y suf|frynge violence schal crye, and no man schal here [here me IS.] ; Y schal crye loude, and `noon is [ther is noon I.] that demeth [demeth me worthi to be herd IS.] . [verse 8] He [The Lord IS.] bisette [hath bisett IS.] aboute my path, and Y may not go; and he settide [hath sett IS.] derknessis in my weie. [verse 9] He hath spuylid me of my glorye, and [and he IS.] hath take awey the coroun fro myn heed. [verse 10] He hath distried me on ech side, and Y perischide [perishe worthly S.] ; and [Om. IS.] he hath take awei myn hope [hope as ȝe gessen IS.] , as fro a tre pullid vp bi the roote. [verse 11] His stronge veniaunce was wrooth [was wrooth, etc.; in ȝyuynge turmentis to me, and this sueth of the seiyng of hise frendis, seiynge that siche peynes ben ȝouun for synne onely. [verse 12] Hise theues camen [han come I.] togidere, and `maden to [thei han maad IS.] hem a wei bi me; and bisegiden [thei han biseegid IS.] my tabernacle in [bi IS.] cumpas. [verse 13] He [The Lord IS.] made fer my britheren fro me; and my knowun [knowun men S.] as aliens ȝeden awei fro me. [verse 14] My neiȝboris forsoken [han forsake IS.] me; and thei that knewen me han forȝete me. [verse 15] The tenauntis of myn hows, and myn handmaydis [handmaidens I.] hadden me as a straunger; and Y was as a pilgrym bifor her iȝen. [verse 16] Y clepide my seruaunt, and he answeride not to me; with myn owne mouth Y preiede hym [hym, but he herde mee not S.] .
