[verse 3] Which [The which I.] fisch Tobie dredde, and criede [therfor he criede IS.] with greet vois, and seide, Sire, he [this fisch IS.] assailith me. [verse 4] And the aungel seide to hym, Take `thou his [the fisch bi the IS.] gile, `ether iowe [Om. I. or bi the iowe S.] , and drawe hym to thee. And whanne he [Tobie IS.] hadde do this thing, he drow it [the fisch IS.] in to the [a IS.] drie place, and it bigan to spraule bifor [to fore g.] hise [the I. Om. S.] feet [feet of Tobie I. Tobie S.] . [verse 5] Thanne the aungel seide to hym [Tobie IS.] , Drawe out the entrails of this fisch, and kepe to thee his herte and [his IS.] galle and mawe [his mawe IS.] ; for [certis IS.] these thingis ben nedeful to [and to S.] medicyns profitabli [thei helpen profitabli I. thei wolen help profitabli S.] . [verse 6] And whanne he [Tobie IS.]

hadde do this [these BC. the g.] thing [thingis B.] , he rostide `hise fleischis [the fleisch therof IS. hise flesch R. the fleisch of the fisch a.] , and thei token [token that fleisch and baren it forth IS.] `with hem in the weie [in the weie with hem IS.] ; thei [and thei IS.] saltiden othere thingis [thingis of that fishe I. thingis or remenauntis of that fissh S.] , that schulde suffice to hem in the weie, til thei camen in to Rages, the [a S.] citee of Medeis. [verse 7] Thanne Tobie axide the aungel, and seide to hym, Azarie, brother, Y bi|seche thee, that thou seie to me, what re|medie [remedies S.] these thingis schulen haue, whiche [which thingis S.] thou comaundidist [hast comaundid IS. comaundist fg.] to be kept of the fisch. [verse 8] And the aungel answeride, and seide to hym, If thou puttist a lytil part of his herte on [upon IS.] the [Om. IS.] coolis [hoot coolis IS.] , the smoke therof dryueth awei [dryueth awey; that is, figurith the putting awey of fendis, for the dedis of the aungel aboute Tobie weren fygura|tif in many thingis; ther|for thilke smoke figuride the virtu of preyer of ȝongere Tobie and of Sare, bi whos merit the aungel Raphael puttide awey the fend fro Sare; wherfor it is seid in viij. c^o. that not thilke smoke droof awey the fend, but that Ra|phael took him, and boond him in the hiȝere partis of Egipt; for sithen aungels ben outirly crea|turis of vndur|stonding, and han no bodies kyndly to hem, no materiel creature may make othir prenting in hem, wherfor this smoke put|tide not awey the fend, but figuride his putting awey. [verse 10] And Tobie seide to him, Where wolt thou, that we dwelle [abiden I. duelle or abyde S.] ? [verse 11] And the aungel answeride, and seide, Here is a man, Raguel bi name, a nyȝ [Om. I.] man of thi lynage, and he hath a douȝtir, Sare bi name; but nether he hath male [knaue child I. male childe S.] nethir ony other femal [maide child I.] , outakun hir. [verse 12] Al his catel is due to thee; and it bihoueth thee [thou moste I.] haue hir to wijf [thi wijf I.] . [verse 13] Therfor axe thou hir of hir fadir; and he schal ȝyue `hir a [Om. S.] wijf to thee [thee hir to wijf H sec. m.] . [verse 14] Thanne Tobie answeride [answerede to him IS.] , and seide, Y haue herd, that sche [this Sara IS.] was ȝouun to seuene hosebondis, and thei [alle thei IS.] ben deed; but also [Om. I.] Y herde [haue herd IS.] this [this also I.] , that a fend killide hem. [verse 15] Therfor [and therfor IS.] Y dredde, lest per|auenture also [Om. S.] these [Om. I.] thingis bifalle to me; and sithen [sith I.] Y am oon [an IS.] aloone [oonly sone IS.] to my fa|dir and modir [to my modir B.] , Y putte [drede to putte IS.] doun `with so|rewe her eelde to hellis [to helle her eelde with drurynesse IS.] [hellis; he dredde lest if he were deed, that his fadir and modir schulden be vnpacient for sorewe, and so die bothe bodily and goostly. [verse 16] Thanne the aungel Raphael seide to hym [Tobie IS.] , Here thou me, and Y schal schewe to thee, `whiche it [who thei IS.] ben, ouer whiche [whom IS.] the fend hath mais|trie; [verse 17] ouer [certis ouer I. certis the feend hath power ouer S.] hem, that taken so weddyngys [her weddyngis IS.] ,

that thei close out God fro hem and fro her mynde; `the fend hath power ouer hem [Om. IS.] , that [and that IS.] ȝyuen so tent [her bisinesse S.] to her [Om. S.] letcherie, as an [Om. I.] hors [hors doith S.] and mule [a mule S.] doon [Om. IS.] , `that han [in whom is S.] noon vndurstondyng [vndirstondyng, ouer hem the feend hath maistrie I.] . [verse 18] But whanne thou hast take hir [hir to wijf S.] , entre thou [Om. S.] in to the [thi S.] bed [bed place S.] , and bi thre daies be thou continent [chast IS.] `fro hir [absteynyng thee from hir in al fleshli lust S.] , and to noon other thing [thing in that [this S] tyme IS.] thou schalt ȝyue tent [thi bisynesse I. the bisinesse S.] with hir, no [Om. I.] but [but oonly I.] to preieris. [verse 19] Forsothe [Certis IS.] in that [the IS.] firste niȝt, whanne the mawe of the fisch is [schal be IS.] brent, the fend [fend therbi IS.] schal be dryuun awei [awei fro ȝou S.] . [verse 20] Sotheli [And IS.] in the secounde nyȝt thou [bi holi preier and bisi mynde thou S.] schalt be resseyued in the [Om. IS.] cou|plyng [couplyng or mariage IS.] of hooli patriarkis [patriarkis, whose mynde is withouten ende S.] . [verse 21] Forsothe [And IS.] in the thridde nyȝt thou [thurȝ thi holi preier and good purpose thou S.] schalt gete bless|yng [the blessyng of God IS.] , that hoole sones [sones in riȝt feith and other vertues S.] be gendrid of ȝou. [verse 22] But whanne the thridde niȝt is passid, thou schalt take the virgyn with the [Om. IS.] drede of the Lord, and thou [in thi wit thou S.] schalt be led [led and moued S.] more bi the loue of children [geting of children IS.] than of [bi IS.] lust [lust of flessh S.] , that in the seed of Abraham thou gete blessyng in sones [thi sones I. sones bryngyng forth S.] .
