[verse 1] Achaz was of twenti ȝeer, whanne he bigan to regne, and he regnede sixtene ȝeer in Jerusalem; he dide not riȝtful|nesse [riȝtwisnesse I.] in the siȝt of the Lord, as Dauid, [verse 2] his fadir, dide [Om. N.] ; but he ȝede in the weies of the kyngis of Israel. Ferthermore and he ȝetyde [ȝetyde out IN.] ymagis to Baalym. [verse 3] He it is that brente encense in the valey of Been|non, and [or S.] purgide [purgide or brent S.] hise sones bi fier bi the custom of hethene men, whiche [whom I.] the Lord killide in the comyng of the sones of Israel [Israel fro Egipt I. Israel towardus the lond of bihest S.] . [verse 4] Also he [Achaz INS.] made sacrifice, and brente encense in hiȝ places, and in hillis, and vndur ech tree ful of bowis. [verse 5] And `his Lord God [the Lord his God NS.] bitook hym in the hond of the [Om. S.] kyng of Sirie, which [the which I.] smoot [smoot or ouercame S.] Achaz, and took [he took IS.] a greet preie of his empire, and brouȝten [he brouȝte it INS.] in to Damask. Also Achaz was bitakun to the hondis of the kyng of Israel, and was [he was INS.] smytun [smytun of him IS.] with a greet wounde. [verse 6] And Facee, the sone of Romelie, killide of [of the men of INS.] Juda sixe scoore thousynde in o dai, alle the men werriours; for thei hadden forsake the Lord God of her fa|dris. [verse 7] In the same tyme Zechry, a myȝti man of Effraym, killide Maasie, the sone of Rogloth, the kyng; and `he killide [Om. IN.] Ezrica, the duyk of his hows, and El|cana, the secounde [secounde persone S.] fro the kyng. [verse 8] And the sones of Israel token of her britheren two hundrid thousynde of wymmen and of children and of damysels, and prey

with out noumbre; and baren [thei baren INS.] it in to Samarie. [verse 9] In that tempest [tempest or veniaunce IS.] a profete of the Lord, Obed bi name, was there, which [the which I. which profeet S.] ȝede out aȝens the oost [oost of Israel INS.] comynge in to Sa|marie, and seide [he seide INS.] to hem, Lo! the Lord God of ȝoure fadris was wrooth aȝens Juda, and bitook [he hath bitake INS.] hem in ȝoure hondis; and ȝe han slayn hem crueli, so that ȝoure cruelte stretchide [stretchith INS.] forth in to heuene. [verse 10] Ferther|more [And N. Ferthermore and S.] ȝe wolen make suget to ȝou the sones of Juda and of Jerusalem in to ser|uauntis and handmaidis [hond maidenes S.] ; which thing is not nedeful to be doon; for [certis INS.] ȝe han syn|ned on [vpon N. in S.] this thing to `ȝoure Lord God [the Lord ȝoure God NS.] . [verse 11] But here [herith S.] ȝe my councel, and lede [ledeth INS.] aȝen the prisounneris, whyche [that I.] ȝe han brouȝt [brouȝt thenns IS.] of ȝoure britheren; for greet veniaunce of the Lord neiȝith [nyȝith niȝ S.] to ȝou. [verse 12] Therfor men [men of Israel S.] of the princes of the sones of Effraym, Azarie, the sone of Johannan, Barachie [and Barachie S.] , the sone of Mosollamoth, Jesechie [and Jesechie S.] , the sone of Sel|lum, and Amasie, the sone of Adali, stoden [verse 13] aȝens hem that [the whiche I. whiche NS.] camen fro the batel; and seiden to hem, Ȝe schulen not brynge in hidur the [tho NS.] prisoneris, lest we [we consentinge to ȝou I. we concente to ȝou to S.] doen synne aȝens the Lord; whi wolen [wil I.] ȝe `ley to [caste up more yuel I. leyn to more yuel vp S.] on ȝoure synnes, and heepe elde [ȝoure olde IS.] trespassis? For [Certis INS.] it [this INS.] is greet synne; the [and the IN. therfor the S.] ire [wraththe IN.] of the strong veniaunce of the Lord neiȝeth on [upon IS.] Israel. [verse 14] And the men werriouris [werriouris of Israel IS.] leften the prey, and alle thingis whiche thei hadden take, bifor the princes and al the multitude. [verse 15] And the men stoden [stoden there IS.] , whiche we remembriden [remembreden and rehersiden S.] bifore, and thei token the prisounneris, and clothiden [thei clothiden INS.] of the spuylis alle that weren nakid; and whanne thei hadden clothid hem, and hadden [Om. INS.] schod [schod hem INS.] , and hadden [Om. INS.] refreschid [refreschid hem INS.] with mete and drynke [with drynke IN.] , and hadden [Om. [verse 16] In that tyme kyng Achaz sente to the kyng of Assiriens, and axide help [help of him IS.] . [verse 17] And Ydumeis [men of Ydumee I. men of Edom NS.] camen, and killiden [thei killiden IN.] many [Om. S.] men of Juda, and token greet prey. [verse 18] Also Filisteis weren spred abrood bi citees of the feeldis, and at the south [south cost INS.] of Juda; and thei token Bethsames, and Hailon, and Gaderoth, and Socoth, and Thannan, and Zamro, with her villagis; and dwelliden [thei dwelliden INS.] in tho. [verse 19] For [Sothly IN. Forsoth S.] the Lord made low Juda for Achaz, the kyng of Juda; for [for thi that IN. for that that S.] he hadde maad him [him self INS.] nakid of help, and hadde [Om. INS.] dis|pisid the Lord. [verse 20] And the Lord brouȝte aȝens him [Achaz INS.] Teglat Phalasar, kyng [the king NS.] of As|siriens, that [which NS.] turmentide hym [Om. INS.] , and waast|ide hym [Om. plures.] , while [the while IS.] no man aȝenstood. [verse 21] Ther|for Achaz, after that he hadde spuylid the hows of the Lord, and the hows of the kyng and of princes [the princes INS.] , ȝaf [he ȝaf INS.] ȝiftis to the kyng of Assiriens, and netheles it profitide `no thing [not S.] to hym. [verse 22] Ferthermore also in the tyme of his angwisch he encreesside dispit aȝens God [As men doen now, gruching in her sijk|nessis and in other dissecis. S.] ; thilke [for thilke INS.] kyng Achaz bi [Om. NS.] [verse 23] hym silf offride sacrifices to the goddis of Damask, hise smyteris [smyteris or destriers IS.] , and seide [he seide INS.] , The goddis of the kyngis of Sirie helpen hem, whiche [the whiche I.] goddis Y schal plese bi sacrifices, and thei schulen help me; whanne aȝen|ward thei weren fallyng [falling and hindring S.] to hym, and to [Om. S.] al Israel. [verse 24] Therfor aftir that Achaz hadde take awei, and broke alle the vessels of the hows of God, he closide the ȝatis of Goddis temple, and made [he made INS.] auteris to hym silf in alle the corneris of Jerusalem. [verse 25] And in alle citees [the citees INS.] of Juda he bildide auteris to brenne [brenne upon S.] encence, and he stiride [stiride therbi IS.] the Lord God of hise fadris to [in to S.] wrathfulnesse. [verse 26] So|theli

[And INS.] the residue [remenaunt INS.] of hise [Achaz INS.] wordis and of alle hise werkis, the formere and the laste, ben writun in the book of kyngis of Juda and of Israel. [verse 27] And Achaz slepte with hise fadris, and thei birieden hym in the citee of Jerusalem; for thei resseyueden not hym in [in to INS.] the sepulcris of the kyngis of Israel; and Ezechie, his sone, regnede for hym.
