[verse 1] Forsothe [And INS.] Amasie, `his sone [the sone of Joas I. sone of Joas N. Joas sone S.] , regnede for hym; Amasie was of fyue and twenti ȝeer, whanne he bigan to regne, and he regnyde nyne and twenti ȝeer in Jerusalem; the name of his modir was Joiaden, of Jeru|salem. [verse 2] And he dide good in the siȝt of the Lord, netheles not in perfit herte. [verse 3] And whanne he siȝ the empire strengthid to hym silf, he stranglide the seruauntis, [verse 4] that [whiche NS.] killiden the kyng, his fadir; but he killide not the sones of hem; as it is writun in the book of the lawe of Moises, where the Lord comaundide, seiynge [seiynge thus I.] , Fadris schulen not be slayn for the [her NS.] sones, ne|ther the [Om. INS.] sones for her fadris; but ech man schal die in [in or for S.] his owne synne. [verse 5] Ther|for [And INS.] Amasie gaderide togidere [Om. IN. thanne S.] Juda [the men of Juda INS.] , and ordeynede [he ordeynede INS.] hem bi meynees and [Om. I. and he ordeyned S.] tribunes and centuriouns, in [and I.] al Juda and Benia|myn; and he noumbride [noumbride hem IN. noumbrid the peple S.] fro twenti ȝeer and aboue, and he foonde thritti thou|synde of ȝonge [able ȝoung S.] men, that ȝeden out to batel, and helden spere and scheeld. [verse 6] Also for mede he hiride of Israel an hundrid thousynde of stronge men, for an hundrid talentis of siluer, that thei schulden fiȝte aȝens the sones of Edom. [verse 7] Forsothe [And INS.] a man of God cam to hym [Amasie INS.] , and seide, A [A! A! V.] ! kyng [thou kyng INS.] , the oost of Israel go [go it S.] not out with thee, for [certis INS.] the Lord is not with Israel and [verse 8] with alle the sones of Effraym; for if thou gessist that batels stonden in the [Om. INS.] myȝt of oost [an oost INS. the oost Xb.] , the Lord schal make thee to be ouercomun of enemyes [thin enemyes IN.] , for [forsothe INS.] it is of God for to helpe, and to turne [turne men INS.] in to fliȝt. [verse 9] And Amasie seide to the man of God, What therfor [thanne S.] schal be doon of the hun|drid talentis, which Y ȝaf to the knyȝtis of Israel? And the man of God answer|ide to hym, The Lord hath [haue S.] , wherof he

may ȝelde to thee myche [many I.] mo thingis than these. [verse 10] Therfor Amasie departide the oost that cam to hym fro Effraym, that it schulde turne aȝen in to his place; and thei [the men INS.] weren wrooth greetli aȝens Juda, and turneden [thei turneden INS.] aȝen in to her cuntrei. [verse 11] For|sothe [And INS.] Amasie ledde out tristili his puple, and ȝede [he ȝede INS.] in to the valei of makyngis of salt, and he killide of the sones of Seir ten thousynde. [verse 12] And the sones of Juda token othere ten thousynde of men, and brouȝten [thei brouȝten hem INS.] to the hiȝ scarre of summe [a IM pr. m.] stoon; and [and thei INS.] castiden [casten I.] hem doun fro the hiȝeste [hiȝeste part I.] in to the [a I.] pit; whiche [the whiche I.] alle [al in her fallyng S.] braken [to-braken I. to-brasten N. to-braste S.] . [verse 13] And thilke oost whom [that I.] Amasie hadde sent aȝen, that it schulde not go with him to batel, was spred abrood in the citees of Juda fro Samarie `til to [vnto INS.] Betheron; and aftir `that it [the oost of Israel IS. it N.] hadde slayn thre thousynde [thousynde of Juda I. thousynde men of Juda NS.] , it took awey [awei with it S.] a greet preie. [verse 14] And Amasie, after the sleyng of Idumeis, and after that he hadde brouȝt [brouȝt thens with him S.] the goddis of the sones of Seir, ordeynede [he ordeynede INS.] hem `in to [to be into I.] goddis to hym silf, and wor|schipide [he worschipide INS.] hem, and brente encense to hem. [verse 15] Wherfor the Lord was wrooth aȝens Ama|sie, and sente [he sente INS.] to hym a profete, that seide to hym, Whi worschipist thou goddis that [the whiche I. whiche NS.] `delyueriden not [han not delyuered INS.] her puple fro thin hond? [verse 16] Whanne [And whanne INS.] the profete spak these thingis, Amasie answeride to hym, Whether thou art a counselour of the king? ceesse thou [thou to speke thus to me NS.] , lest perauenture Y sle thee. Therfor [And INS.] the profete ȝede awei [awei fro him S.] , and seide, Y woot, that the Lord thouȝte [hath thouȝt INS.] to sle thee; for thou didist [hast do INS.] this yuel, and ferthermore thou [for thou S.] assentidist [assentist NS.] not to my counsel. [verse 17] Therfor Amasie, the king of Juda, whanne he hadde take [Om. INS.] a ful yuel counsel, sente [he sente INS.] to the kyng of Israel Joas, the sone of Joa|chaz, the sone of Hieu, and seide [he seide IN. he seide to him S.] , Come

thou [thou to me S.] , se we [and se we IN. and se thow we S.] vs togidere. [verse 18] And he [the kyng of Israel IS.] sente aȝen [Om. I.] messangeris [messageris to him S.] , and seide, A `cardue, ether a tasil [thystil I. tasil N.] , which [that INS.] is in [Om. S.] the Liban [Liban or mount S.] sente to the [a INS.] cedre [cedre tree INS.] of the Liban, and seide, Ȝyue thi douȝter a [Om. INS.] wijf to my sone; and lo! beestis that weren in the [Om. N.] wode of the [Om. I.] Liban ȝeden and defouliden the cardue [thistil I. tasil NS.] . [verse 19] Thou seidist, Y haue smyte [smetyn or distroyed S.] Edom, and therfor thin herte is reysid in to pride; sitte thou [thou stille I. thou or abide S.] in thin hows; whi stirist thou yuel aȝens thee [thi selff INS.] , that thou falle [falle or perische IS.] , and Juda with thee? [verse 20] Amasie nolde [wolde not I.] here [here this I. here these wordis NS.] , for it was the wille of the Lord, that he schulde be bitakun [takun X.] in to the hondis of enemyes [hise enemyes NS.] , for the goddis of Edom [Edom whiche he wirschipide IS.] . [verse 21] Therfor Joas, kyng [the kyng INS.] of Israel, stiede [wente up aȝens Juda I. stiede aȝens Juda N. stiede up aȝens Juda S.] , and thei [he and Amasie INS.] siȝen hem silf togidere. Sotheli [And INS.] Amasie, the [Om. S.] kyng of Juda, was [verse 22] in Bethsames of [a citee of IS.] Juda; and Juda felde doun bifor Israel, and fledde [he fledde INS.] in to his tabernaclis. [verse 23] Certis [And INS.] the kyng of Israel took in Bethsames Amasie, the [Om. S.] kyng of Juda, the [Om. NS.] sone of Joas, sone [the sone IN.] of Joachaz, and [and he INS.] brouȝte [brouȝte him NS.] in to Jerusalem; and he [Joas IN.] destriede the wallis therof fro the ȝate of Effraym `til to [vnto INS. to X.] the ȝate of the corner, bi foure hundrid cubitis [cubitis of lengthe S.] . [verse 24] And be ledde aȝen in to Samarie al the gold and siluer, and alle vessels [the vessels INS.] whiche [that I.] he foond in the hows of the Lord, and at Obededom, in the tresouris also of the kyngis hows, also and the sones of ostagis [ostagis he took awei with him S.] . [verse 25] Forsothe [And INS.] Amasie, kyng [the kyng INX.] of Juda, the [and the A.] sone of Joas, lyuede fiftene ȝeer aftir that Joas, kyng [the kyng IN.] of Israel, the [and the A pr. m.] sone of Joachaz, was deed. [verse 26] Sotheli [And INS.] the residue [remenaunt INS.] of [and INS.] the formere and the laste wordis of Amasie ben writun in the book of kyngis of Juda and of Israel. [verse 27] And aftir that he ȝede [had gon INS.]

awei fro the Lord, thei settiden [setten I.] to hym tresouns in Jerusalem; and whanne he hadde fledde to Lachis, thei senten [senten thider S.] and [verse 28] killiden hym there; and thei brouȝten [brouȝten him INS.] aȝen on [vpon S.] horsis, and birieden [thei birieden INS.] hym with his fadris in the citee of Dauid.
