[verse 1] Aftir these thingis the sones of Moab, and the sones of Amon, and with hem of [Om. CIN.] Idumeis [men of Ydumee INS.] , weren gaderid togidere to [and thei camen to INS.] Josa|phat, for to fiȝte aȝens hym. [verse 2] And mes|sangeris camen, and schewiden [schewiden this IS.] to Josa|phat, and seiden, A greet multitude of tho placis that [whiche NS.] ben biȝondis the see, and [Om. S.] of Sirie, is comun aȝens thee; and, lo! thei stonden [stonden togidre INS.] in Asasonthamar, which [that INS.] is En|gaddi [clepid Engaddi INS.] . [verse 3] Forsothe [And INS.] Josaphat was aferd by drede, and `ȝaf hym silf al for [al him selff he ȝaf INS.] to preye `the Lord [to the Lord of help S.] , and prechide [he prechide IN. he prechide, that is, he comaundid S.] fastynge to al Juda. [verse 4] And Juda was gaderid togidere [Om. INS.] for to preye the Lord, but [and INS.] also alle men camen fro her citees for to biseche hym [hym of help NS.] . [verse 5] And whanne Josaphat hadde stonde in the myddis of the cumpeny of Juda and of Je|rusalem, in [and in A.] the hows of the Lord, bifor [verse 6] the newe large place [place of the temple NS.] , he seide, Lord God of oure fadris, thou art God in heuene, and thou art lord of alle rewmes of folkis; strengthe and power ben in thin hond, `and noon [ne ony thing INS.] may aȝenstonde thee. [verse 7] Whe|ther not thou, oure God, hast slayn alle the dwelleris of this lond bifor thi puple Israel, and hast [thou hast INS.] ȝoue it to the seed of Abraham, thi freend, withouten ende? [verse 8] And thei [thei, that is, the after comers of Abraham S.] dwelliden [han dwellid INS.] therynne, and bildiden [thei bildiden INS.] therinne a seyntuarie to thi name, and [verse 9] seiden, If yuelis comen on [to INS.] vs, the [or the INS.] swerd of doom, pestilence, and [or INS.] hungur, we schulen stonde bifor this hows withouten ende in thi siȝt, in which hows thi name is clepid [ynclepid IN.] , and we [Om. A.] schulen crie [crie there IS.] to thee

in oure tribulaciouns; and thou schalt here vs, and schalt [Om. INS.] make vs saaf. [verse 10] Now ther|for [therfor Lord INS.] lo! the sones of Amon and of [the sones of S.] Moab and the hil of Seir, bi whiche [whom I. whiche peplis S.] thou graunt|idist not to the sones of Israel for to passe, whanne thei ȝeden out of Egipt, but thei bowiden awei fro hem, and killiden [thei killiden INS.] not [verse 11] hem, thei [Om. A. but thei I. Lord, thei S.] doon [doon yuel for good S.] aȝenward, and enforsen [thei enforsen hem I. thei enforsen NS.] to caste vs out of the possessioun, which [that I.] [verse 12] thou, oure God, hast ȝoue to vs; therfor whether thou [thou, Lord IS.] schalt not deme hem [hem gilti of greet trispace S.] ? Treuli in vs is not so greet strengthe, that we moun aȝenstonde this multitude, that felde [fallith I. fallen N.] yn on [upon I. now vpon S.] vs; but sithen [sith INS.] we witen not what [that what S.] we owen to do, we `han oneli this residue [the peple that is left han cause I. the residue han this oonly N. the residue, or the remenauntis, of the peple han this trust oonli in the S.] , that we dresse oure iȝen to thee [bifor thee D.] . [verse 13] Sotheli [And INS.] al Juda stood bifor the [thee I.] Lord, with her litle children and wyues [her wyues INS.] and fre [with her fre INS.] children. [verse 14] Forsothe [And INS.] Hiaziel, the sone of Zacarie, sone [the sone INS.] of Ananye, sone [the sone INS.] of Hieyel, sone [the sone INS.] of Machanye, was a dekene, and of [he was of IS.] the sones of Asaph, on [upon INS.] whom the Spirit of the Lord was maad in the [Om. IN.] [verse 15] myddis of the cumpeny [cumpeny of Juda IS.] , and he [Om. I.] seide, Al Juda, and ȝe that dwellen in Jerusalem, and thou, king Josaphat, perseyue ȝe [ȝe or taketh heede IS.] , the Lord seith these thingis to ȝou, Nyle ȝe drede, nether be ȝe aferd of this multitude, for it is not ȝoure batel, but Goddis batel. [verse 16] To morewe ȝe schulen stie [stiȝe vp NS.] `aȝens hem; for thei schulen [Om. I.] stie [stiȝe vp NS. Om. I.] bi the side of the hil, `bi name Seys [clepid Sey bi name INS.] , and ȝe schulen fynde hem in the hiȝnesse [heiȝthe INS.] of the stronde, which [that INS.] is aȝens the wildirnesse of Jheruhel. [verse 17] For [Certis INS.] it schulen [schal IN.] not be ȝe, that schulen fiȝte; but oneli stonde ȝe trustili, and ȝe schulen se the help of the Lord on [upon IS.] ȝou. A [O INS. al O.] ! Juda and Jerusalem, nyle ȝe drede, nether be ȝe aferd; to morewe ȝe schulen go out aȝens hem, and the Lord schal be with ȝou. [verse 18] Therfor Josaphat, and Juda, and alle the

dwelleris of Jerusalem, felden [fellen I. felden doun NS.] lowli on [upon IS.] the erthe bifor the Lord, and worschypiden hym. [verse 19] Forsothe [And INS.] the dekenes of the sones of Caath, and of the sones of Chore, heri|eden the Lord God of Israel with greet vois an hiȝ. [verse 20] And whanne [whanne vpon the morewe S.] thei hadden rise eerli, thei ȝeden not bi the deseert of Thecue; and whanne thei `hadden gon [weren go INS.] forth, Josaphat [king Josaphat INS.] stood in the myddis of hem, and seide, Juda and alle the dwell|eris of Jerusalem, here ȝe me; bileue ȝe in `ȝoure Lord God [the Lord ȝoure God INS.] , and ȝe schulen be sikur; bileue ȝe to hise prophetis, and alle pro|speritees schulen come [come to ȝou NS.] . [verse 21] And he [the kyng INS.] ȝaf coun|sel to the puple, and he ordeynede the syngeris of the Lord, that thei schulden herye hym [the Lord INS.] in her cumpanyes, and that [Om. S.] thei schulden go bifor the oost, and seie with acordynge vois, Knouleche ȝe to the Lord, for he is good; for his merci is `in to the world [withouten eend S.] . [verse 22] And whanne thei bigun|nen to synge heriyngis, the Lord turnede the buyschementis of hem `in to [aȝens INS.] hem silf, that is, of the sones of Amon and of Moab and of [of men of I. of the men of S.] the hil of Seir, that [the whiche I. whiche NS.] ȝeden out to fiȝte aȝens Juda; and thei weren slayn [slayn eche of oother INS.] . [verse 23] For whi the sones of Amon and of Moab risiden [risen EFIL.] togidere aȝens the dwelleris of the hil of Seir, to [and to S.] sle, and to [Om. C.] do awey hem; and whanne thei hadden do this [this thing INS.] in werk, thei weren `turned also [thanne also turned IS.] `in to [aȝen INS.] hem silf, and felden [fellen I. thei fellen NS.] doun togidere bi woundis ech of [sleiynge INS.] othere. [verse 24] Certis whanne Juda was comun to the denne, that biholdith [biholdith or is forn aȝens IS.] the wildir|nesse, he siȝ afer al the large cuntrei [place S.] ful of deed bodies, and that noon was left, that miȝte ascape deeth. [verse 25] Therfor Josa|phat cam, and al the puple with hym, to drawe awey the spuylis of deed men, and thei founden among the deed bodies dy|uerse purtenaunce of houshold, and clothis, and ful [ful of S.] preciouse vessels; and thei ra|uyischiden [rauyschiden or toke tho thingis awey IS.] in dyuerse maneres, so that

thei myȝten not bere [thanne bere thens S.] alle thingis, nether thei myȝten [myȝten not C.] take awei the spuylis bi thre daies, for the [Om. INS.] greetnesse of prey. [verse 26] Sotheli [And INS.] in the fourthe dai thei [the men of Juda INS.] weren gaderid to|gidere in the valey of Blessyng; `forsothe for [for for thi that I. for therfore that N. for forthi S.] thei blessiden the Lord there, thei clepiden that place the valei of Blessyng `til in to [vnto I. in to N. vnto into S.] present [this present IS.] dai. [verse 27] And ech man of Juda turnede aȝen, and the dwelleris of Jerusalem, and Josaphat [Josa|phat ȝede INS.] bifor hem, in to Jerusalem with greet gladnesse; for the Lord God hadde ȝoue to hem ioye of her enemyes. [verse 28] And thei entriden [turneden aȝen INS.] in to Jeru|salem with sawtrees, and harpis, and trum|pis, in [goynge in I. Om. NS.] to the hows of the Lord. [verse 29] Forsothe the [Om. IS.] drede of the Lord felde on [upon IS.] alle the rewmes of londis, whanne thei hadden herd, that [how that S.] the Lord hadde fouȝte aȝens the enemies of Israel. [verse 30] And the rewme of Josaphat restide [restide fro werre INS.] ; and the Lord ȝaf `pees to hym [him pees S.] `bi cumpas [al aboute I.] . [verse 31] Therfor [And INS.] Josaphat regnede on [upon I. wilsumli vpon S.] Juda; and he was of fyue and thritti ȝeer, whanne he bigan to regne; sotheli [and INS.] he regnede fyue and twenti ȝeer in Jerusalem; and the name of his modir was Azuba, the [Om. C.] douȝtir of Selathi. [verse 32] And he [Josaphat IS.] ȝede in the weie of Asa his fadir, and bowide [he bowide INS.] not fro it, and he dide what euer thingis weren plesaunt bifor the Lord. [verse 33] Netheles he dide not awei hiȝ [the hiȝ EIL.] thingis [placis BCDEFGKLMNOPQRSUWXbç. mawmett placis I.] [hiȝe place; in the xvii. c^o. the Scripture spekith of hiȝe places, in whiche men offride to idolis and not to God; here the Scripture [spekith] of hiȝe placis, in whiche men offride to God; and this was suffrid of many kyngis, to eschewe more yuel. Lire here. C.] ; ȝit [and ȝit INS.] the puple hadde not dressid her herte to the Lord God of her fadris. [verse 34] Forsothe [And INS.] the residue [remenaunt INS.] of the formere and the [of the INS. Om. BCDGKOQRUWXb.] laste dedis of Josaphat ben writun in the book of Hieu, the [Om. C.] sone of Anany, which [the whiche deedis I. whiche dedis NS.] he ordeynede [ordeynede to be writen INS.] in the book [bookis X.] of kyngis [the kyngis CIS. the king N.] of Israel. [verse 35] After these thingis Josaphat, kyng of Juda, made frendschipis with Ocozie, kyng of Israel, whose werkis weren ful [moost INS.] [verse 36] yuele; and he [Josaphat S.] was parcener [parcener with Ochozie I. parcener to him N. parcener in wille and werke S.] that [and N. so that S.] thei [Ocozie and he bi oon assent S.]

[verse 37] Sotheli [And INS.] Eliezer, sone [the sone INS.] of Dodan, of Maresa, profesiede to Josaphat, and seide, For thou haddist [hast had INS.] boond of pees with Ocozie, the Lord smoot [hath smyte or destried IS. hath distried N.] thi werkis; and the schippis [schippis whiche he consentide to make INS.] ben brokun [al to-brokun INS.] , and myȝten [thei myȝten INS.] not go in to Tharsis.
