CAP. XVIII.

[verse 1] Therfor [Forsothe INS.] Josaphat was riche [ful riche INS.] and ful [Om. INS.] noble, and bi affynyte, `ethir alie [Om. IN.] , he was ioyned to Achab. [verse 2] And aftir ȝeeris [certeyn ȝeeris INS.] he [Josaphat INS.] cam doun to hym [Achab INS.] in to Samarie; at whos comyng Achab killide ful many wetheris and oxis [oxen INS.] , and to the puple that cam with hym; and he [Achab NS.] counseilide hym [Josaphat INS.] to stie [wende up with him I. stie with him N. stie vp with him S.] in to Ramoth of Galaad. [verse 3] And [Om. S.] Achab, the [Om. INS.] kyng of Israel, seide to Josaphat, kyng of Juda, Come thou with me in to Ramoth of Galaad. To whom he answeride, As and Y am [am ioyned to thee I. am bi affinyte ioyned to the in fren|shepe S.] , thou [so and thou NS.] art [art also to me I. art to me S.] ; as [and as IN. and as bi our affinyte S.] thi puple [peple is my peple S.] , so and [also I.] my puple [peple is thi peple S.] ; and we schulen be with thee in batel. [verse 4] And [And eft I. And ouer this S.] Josaphat seide to the kyng of Israel, Y biseche [biseche thee IS.] , counsele thou in present [this present IS.] tyme the word of the Lord. [verse 5] Therfor [Thanne I.] the kyng of Israel gaderide togi|dere foure hundrid `men of [Om. C.] prophetis, and seide [he seide INS.] to hem, Owen we to go in to Ra|math of Galaad for to fiȝte, ethir `take reste [reste at hoom I. shuln we take reste and cum not there S.] ? And thei [the prophetis INS.] seiden, Stie ȝe [ȝe up thidere I. ȝe vp. N. up thidere S.] , and God schal bitake [bitake it INS.] in [in to INS.] the hond of the king. [verse 6] And Josaphat seide, Whether no profete of the Lord is [be IS.] here, that we `axe also [may also axe I. axe this also S.] of hym? [verse 7] And the kyng of Israel seide to Josaphat, O man is [ther is I. is niȝ here S.] , of whom we `moun axe [may wite I. moun wite NS.] the wille of the Lord, but and [Om. IS.] Y hate hym, for he prophecieth not good [good thing IN. good thing to my lykyng S.] , but yuel [yuel thing IN. he profecieth yuel thing S.] to me in al tyme; sothely [and INS.] it is Mychee, the sone of Jebla. And Josaphat seide to hym, Kyng, speke thou not in this maner. [verse 8] Therfor [Thanne I.] the kyng of Israel cle|pide oon of the [hise INS.] geldyngis [geldingis or chast seruauntis I. chaast ser|uauntis NS.] , and seide to hym, Clepe thou soone [anoon IN. to me anoon S.] Mychee, the sone of Jebla. [verse 9] Forsothe [And INS.] the kyng of Israel and Josaphat, the [Om. INS.] kyng of Juda, saten [saten thanne I. saten this tyme S.]

euer eithir in his seete, and weren [thei weren INS.] clothid in kyngis aray; forsothe [sotheli BCDEFGKLMOPQRUWXbç. and INS.] thei saten in the cornfloor, `ether large hows [Om. IN. ether in a large house S.] , bisidis the ȝate of Samarie [the seyntuarie IN.] ; and alle the prophetis [kingis profetis S.] profesieden bifor hem. [verse 10] Forsothe [Oon of hem I. And N. And oo greet profeet of hem S.] Sede|chie, the sone of Cananee, made to hym yrone hornes, and seide [he seide to Achab I. he seide to king Achab S.] , The Lord seith these thingis, With these [these hornes IS.] thou schalt wyn|dewe [wyndewe or scatere abrood IS.] Sirie [the men of Sirie INS.] , til thou al to-brake it [that loond IS. hem N.] . [verse 11] And alle prophetis [the prophetis IN. the kingis profeetis S.] profesieden in lijk maner, and seiden [thei seiden to Achab IS. thei seiden N.] , Stie thou [thou up INS.] in to Ramoth of Galaad, and thou schalt haue prosperite; and the Lord schal bitake hem in to the hondis of the kyng. [verse 12] Forsothe [And INS.] the mes|sanger, that ȝede to clepe Mychee, seide to hym, Lo! the wordis of alle prophetis [the prophetis IS.] tellen with o mouth goodis [goode thingis INS.] to the kyng; therfor, Y preye thee, that thi word di|sente [discorde I. dissent or discord S.] not fro hem, and that thou speke prosperitees [prosperitees to him I. prosperite to the king S.] . [verse 13] To whom Mychee answer|ide, The Lord lyueth, for what euer thingis my Lord [Lord God INS.] spekith to me, Y schal speke [sey INS.] these [tho I.] thingis. Therfor [And INS.] he [Mychee INS.] cam to the kyng. [verse 14] To whom the kyng seide, Mychee, owen we go in to Ramoth of Galaad to fiȝte, ether take [to take INS.] reste [reste, and not to go thidere INS.] ? To whom he [Mychee INS.] answeride, Stie ȝe [ȝe up thider INS.] , for alle prosperitees schulen come [come to ȝou I. come there to ȝou NS.] , and enemyes schulen be bi|takun [takun NSX.] in to ȝoure hondis [hondis, as ȝour profetis to whom ȝe bileuen, profecien to ȝou S.] . [verse 15] And the kyng seide [seide to him S.] , Eft and eft Y charge thee, that thou speke not to me no but that [that thing INS.] that is soth in the name of the Lord. [verse 16] And he [Mychee INS.] seide, Y siȝ al Israel scaterid [scaterid abrood INS.] in the [Om. NS.] hillis, as scheep with out scheepherde [a scheepherde IS.] . And the Lord seide, These men han not lordis; ech man [man therfor IS.] turne aȝen in to his hows in pees. [verse 17] The kyng of Israel seide to Josa|phat, Whether Y seide not to [Om. S.] thee, that he profesiede not ony good [good thing NS.] to me, but

tho thingis that ben yuele? [verse 18] And therfor [thanne I.] Mychee seide, Here ȝe the word of the Lord. Y siȝ the Lord sittynge in his trone, and al the oost [oost or cumpany S.] of heuene stond|ynge nyȝ him at the riȝtside and [and at the INS.] `left|side [left NS.] . [verse 19] And the Lord seide, Who schal disseyue Achab, the [Om. INS.] kyng of Israel, that he stie [stie up INS.] , and falle doun [doun bi deth S.] in Ramoth of Galaad? And whanne oon seide in [he shuld disseiue him in S.] this maner, and another seide in [he shuld disseiue him in S.] another ma|ner, [verse 20] a spirit cam forth, and stood bifor the Lord, and seide, Y schal disseyue hym [Achab INS.] . To whom the Lord seide, `Wherynne, therfor [Wherynne B. And wherynne INS.] schalt thou disseyue [disseyue him INS.] ? [verse 21] And he answeride, Y schal [shal, he seith S.] go out, and Y schal be a `fals spirit [lyȝinge spirit N. spirit leȝinge S.] in the mouth of alle hise profetis. And the Lord seide [seide to him NS.] , Thou schalt disseyue [disseyue him I. disseyue Achab NS.] , and thou schalt haue the may|stri; go thou out, and do so. [verse 22] Now [Om. NS.] ther|for, lo! the Lord hath ȝoue a spirit of leesyng in the mouth of alle thi prophetis, and the Lord spak [hath spoken INS.] yuels [yuel thingis INS.] of thee [thee to come I. thee, that is, he hath seid yuel thingis to come to thee S.] . [verse 23] For|sothe [And IN.] Sedechie [Sedechie, the kingis propheet IS.] , the sone of Chananee, neiȝide [neiȝede nyȝ NS.] , and smoot [he smoot INS.] `the cheke of Mychee [Mychee upon the cheeke INS.] , and seide, Bi what weye passide [hath INS.] the Spirit of the Lord [Lord passid INS.] fro me to speke to [with I.] thee? [verse 24] And Mychee [Mychee, the propheet I. Mychee, the prophete of God S.] seide [seide to him S.] , Thou thi silf schalt se in that dai, whanne thou schalt entre fro closet in to closet, that thou be hid [hid for drede I. hid, that thou hast disseiued the king bi lesyng S.] . [verse 25] Sotheli [And INS.] the kyng of Israel comaundide, seiynge, Take ȝe Mychee, and lede ȝe hym to Amon, prince of the citee, and to Joas, [verse 26] the sone of Amalech; and ȝe schulen seie [seie to hem NS.] , The kyng seith these thingis, Sende ȝe [ȝe or put ȝe S.] this man in to prisoun, and ȝyue ȝe to [Om. NS.] hym a litil of breed, and a litil of [Om. K.] watir, til [til that IN. til the tyme that S.] Y turne aȝen in pees. [verse 27] And Mychee seide, If thou turnest aȝen in pees, the Lord spak not in [to NSX.] me [me these thingis S.] . And [And eft I.] he [Myche S.] seide, Alle `puplis here ȝe [peplis, that ben here present, here ȝe, that is, vnderstonde ȝe, these thingis that ben seid S.] . [verse 28] Therfor [Thanne I.] the kyng

of Israel, and Josaphat, the kyng of Juda, stieden [stieden up INS.] in to Ramoth of Galaad. [verse 29] And the kyng of Israel seide to Josaphat, Y schal chaunge [chaunge or do of S.] clothing [my clothing I. my kingis clothes S.] , and so Y schal go to fiȝte; but be thou clothid in thi clothis [clothis, that is, in thi kingis aray NS.] . Therfor [And INS.] whanne the kyng of Israel hadde chaungid clothing [his clothing INS.] , he cam [cam forth INS.] to batel. [verse 30] For|sothe [And INS.] the kyng of Sirie comaundide to the duykis of his [the NS.] multitude of knyȝtis [his knyȝtis NS.] , and seide [seide to hem S.] , Fiȝte ȝe not aȝens the leeste, nether [ne S.] aȝens the mooste; no [Om. I.] but aȝens the kyng aloone of Israel. [verse 31] Therfor whanne the princes of the multitude of knyȝtis hadden seyn Josaphat [Josaphat, kyng of Juda IS.] , thei seiden, This is the kyng of Israel; and thei cumpassiden hym, and fouȝten [fouȝten aȝens him IS.] . And he [Josaphat INS.] criede to the Lord; and the Lord helpide hym, and turnede hem [hem that feersly assayled him S.] awey fro hym. [verse 32] Sotheli [And INS.] whanne the duykis of the multitude of knyȝtis hadden herd [herd or vndirstonde IS.] , that it was not the kyng of Israel, thei leften hym. [verse 33] Forsothe [And INS.] it bifelde [bifelle thanne I. bifille ther thanne S.] , that oon [a man I. OO man NS.] of the puple [puple of Sirie IS.] schette an arewe in to vncerteyn [vncerteyn or to gesse I. vncerteynte amonge the oost of Israel S.] , and smoot [he smoot INS.] the [Achab the IS.] kyng of Israel bitwixe the necke and the schuldris. And he [Achab NS.] seide to his charietere, Turne thin hond, and lede me out of the scheltrun; for Y am woundid. [verse 34] And the batel was endid in that dai. Certis the [Achab the N. Achab S.] kyng of Israel stood in his chare aȝens [forn aȝens the oost of INS.] men of Sirye `til to [vnto INS.] euentid [the euentid INS.] , and he diede, whanne the sunne ȝede doun.
