[verse 1] Yn the secounde ȝeer of Joas, sone [the sone I.] of Joachas, kyng of Israel, Amasie, sone [the sone I.] of Joas, kyng of Juda, regnyde. [verse 2] Amasie was of fyue and twenti ȝeer, whanne he bigan to regne; forsothe [and I.] he regnyde in Jerusalem nyne and twenti ȝeer; the name of his modir was Joade of Jerusalem. [verse 3] And he dide riȝtfulnesse bifor the Lord, nethe|les not as Dauid, his fadir [fadir dide I.] ; he dide bi alle thingis whiche [that I.] Joas, his fadir, dide, [verse 4] no but this oonli [this onely; this may not be referrid to the lettre next bifore, but to this that is seid, he dide riȝtfulnesse bifor the Lord, no but this onely, etc. Lire here. C.] , that he dide not awei hiȝ thingis; for ȝit the puple made sacri|fice, and brent encence in hiȝ thingis. [verse 5] And whanne he [Amasie I.] hadde gete the rewme, he smoot hise seruauntis, that hadden killid [verse 6] the kyng, his fadir; but he killide not the sones of hem that hadden slayn `the kyng [his fadir I.] , bi that that is writun in the book of the lawe of Moyses, as the Lord comaundide to Moises, and seide, Fadris schulen not die for the [her I.] sones, nethir the [Om. I.] sones for the [her I.] fadris, but eche man schal die in his owne synne. [verse 7] He [Amasie I.] smoot Edom in the valey of makyngis of salt, `he smoot [Om. I.] ten thousynde [thousynde of men I.] , and took `the Stoon [Om. I.] in batel [batel the noble Stoon, a citee of Arabie I.] ; and he clepide the name therof Jethel [Jethel; that is, sourenesse of teeth, for thei that weren slayn there gnastiden with teeth, for the orrour and so|rewe of deth. [verse 9] And Joas, kyng of Israel, sente aȝen to Amasie, kyng of Juda, and seide [seide mystily I.] , The cardue [cardue or thistle I.] , `that is, a low eerbe, and ful of thornes [Om. I.] , of the Liban sente to the cedre, which [that I.] is in the [Om. I.] Liban, and seide, Ȝyue thi douȝtir wijf to my sone; and the beestis of the forest, that ben in the Liban, passiden [passiden forth I.] , and tredden [trooden I.] doun the cardue. thin hows; whi excitist [stirist I.] thou yuel, that thou falle, and Juda with thee? [verse 11] And Amasie assentide not `to be in pees [Om. I.] ; and Joas, kyng [the kyng I.] of Israel, stiede [stiede up I.] , and he and Amasie, kyng [the kyng I.] of Juda, sien hem silf in [meetinge in bateil in I.] Bethsames, a citee of Juda. [verse 12] And Juda was smytun bifor [tofore I.] Israel; and thei fledden ech man in to his tabernaclis. [verse 13] Sotheli Joas, kyng [the kyng I.] of Israel, took in Bethsames Amasie, kyng [the kyng I.] of Juda, the sone of Joas, sone [the sone I.] of Ocozie, and brouȝte hym in to Jerusalem; and he [the kyng of Israel I.] brak the wal of Jeru|salem, fro the ȝate of Effraym `til to [vnto I.] the ȝate of the corner, bi foure hundrid cu|bitis. [verse 14] And he took al the gold and sil|uer, and alle vessels [the vessels I.] , that weren foundun in the hows of the Lord, and in the tre|sours of the kyng; and he took ostagis [ostagis, that is, ȝiftis of the biseegid I.] [ostagis; that is, the sones of noble men, that her fadris myȝten not rebelle aȝenus hem. [verse 15] Sotheli [Certis I.] the resydue of wordis [the wordis I.] of Joas, whiche [that I.] he dide, and his strengthe, bi which he fauȝt aȝens Amasie, kyng of Juda, whe|ther these ben not writun in the book of wordis of dayes of the [Om. I.] kyngis of Israel? [verse 16] And Joas slepte with hise fadris, and was biried in Samarie with the kyngis of Is|rael; and Jeroboam, his sone, regnede for hym. [verse 17] Forsothe Amasie, sone [the sone I.] of Joas, kyng [the kyng A.] of Juda, lyuede fyue and twenti ȝeer, after that Joas, sone [the sone I.] of Joachaz, kyng of Israel, was deed. [verse 18] Forsothe the residue of wordis [the wordis I.] of Amasie, whether these ben not writun in the book of wordis of daies of the kyngis of Juda? [verse 19] And `sweryng [swering, etc.; that is, con|spirasie. Lire here. Juda, after [and after I.] that `the kyng [Azarie I.] slepte with hise fadris. [verse 23] In the fiftenethe ȝeer of Ama|sie, sone [the sone I.] of Joas, kyng of Juda, Jeroboam, sone [the sone I.] of Joas, kyng of Israel, regnyde in [verse 24] Samarie oon and fourti ȝeer; and dide that, that is yuel bifor the Lord; he ȝede not awei fro alle the synnes of Jeroboam, sone of Nabath, that made Israel to do synne. [verse 25] He restoride the termes of Israel, fro the entryng of Emath `til to [vnto I.] the see of wildirnesse, bi the word of the Lord God of Israel, which [that I.] he spak bi his ser|uaunt Jonas, sone [the sone I.] of Amathi, bi Jonas, the prophete, that was of Jeth [of Geth; in the III. book, the laste co., it is seid, that he was of Sarepta, for he was the sone of a wom|man of Sa|repta. The soiling is this: here he is nemyd of Geth, which is a town in the rewme of Is|rael, and he was biried there, and the wrytere of this book nemyde him here of that place. Lire here. [verse 26] For the Lord siȝ the ful bittir turment of Israel, and that thei weren wastid `til to [vnto I.] the closid men of prisoun, and the [to the I.] laste men, and `noon was [ther was noon I.] that helpide Israel. [verse 27] And the Lord spak not, that he schulde do awei Israel fro vndur heuene, but he sauyde hem in the hond of Jeroboam, sone [the sone I.] of Joas. [verse 28] For|sothe the residue of wordis [the wordis I.] of Jeroboam, and alle thingis whiche [that I.] he dide, and the strengthe of hym, bi which he fauȝt, and hou he restoride Damask, and Emath of Juda, in Israel, whether these ben not wrytun in the book of wordis of daies of the kyngis of Israel? [verse 29] And Jeroboam slepte with hise fadris, the kyngis of Is|rael; and Azarie [Zacharie S.] , his sone, regnede for hym.
