[verse 1] In the thre and twentithe ȝeer of Joas, sone [the sone I.] of Ocozie, kyng of Juda, Joachaz, sone [the sone I.] of Hieu, regnede on [upon I.] Israel, in Sa|marie seuentene ȝeer. [verse 2] And he dide yuel bifor the Lord, and he suede the synnes of Jeroboam, sone [the sone I.] of Nabath, that made Israel to do synne; and he bowide not awei fro tho [tho synnus I.] . [verse 3] And the strong [woodnesse or strong I.] veniaunce [veniaunce; in Latyn it is seid, the wood|nesse of the Lord, that is, the rigour of Goddis riȝtful|nesse, to the punysching of synne. C.] of the Lord was wrooth aȝens Israel, and he bitook hem in to the hondis [hoond I.] of Azael, kyng of Sirie, and in [to I.] the hond of Bena|dab, sone of Asael [Asael, kyng of Sirie I.] , in alle daies. [verse 4] For|sothe Joachaz bisouȝte the face of the Lord, and the Lord herde hym; for he [thi that the Lord I.] siȝ the anguysch of Israel, for the kyng of Sirie hadde al to brokun hem. [verse 5] And the Lord ȝaf a sauyour [sauyour; this sauyour was the aungel souereyn of the rewme of Is|rael, for aun|gels, souereyns of rewmys, procuren the good of rewme assigned to her kepinge, as it is had in X. c^o. of Danyel; wherfor this aungel lettide, bi Goddis or|denaunce, ba|tels to rise aȝenus Joachaz, fro that tyme; so that thouȝ he hadde not puple and vertu to aȝenstonde aduersaries, netheles aduer|saries of him weren refreyn|ed bi vertu of the aungel priuy to men, bi drede sent in to hem, ether by other maner, so that thei leften Joachaz and his puple in pees. [verse 8] Forsothe the residue [remenaunt I.] of wordis [the woordis I.] of Joachaz, and alle thingis whiche [that I.] he dide, and the strength of hym, whether these ben not wrytun in the book of wordis of daies of the kyngis of Israel? [verse 9] And Joachaz slepte with hise fadris, and thei [men I.] birieden hym in Samarie; and Joas, his sone, regnyde for hym. [verse 10] In the se|uenthe [seuen EILP.] and threttithe [thretti L.] ȝeer of Joas, king of Juda, Joas, sone [the sone I.] of Joachaz, regnede on [upon I.] Israel in Samarie sixtene ȝeer. [verse 11] And he dide that, that is yuel in the [Om. I.] siȝt of the Lord; for he bowide not awei fro alle the synnes of Jeroboam, sone [the sone I.] of Nabath, that made Israel to do synne; he [but he I.] ȝede in tho synnes. [verse 12] Forsothe the residue [remenaunt I.] of wordis [the wordis I.] of Joas, and alle thingis whiche [that I.] he dide, but also his strengthe, hou he fauȝt aȝens Amasie, kyng of Juda, whe|ther these ben not writun in the book of wordis of daies [the daies I.] of the kyngis of Israel? [verse 13] And Joas slepte with hise fadris; forsothe Jeroboam sat on [upon I.] his trone. Sotheli [And I.] Joas was biried in Samarie with the kyngis of Israel. [verse 14] Forsothe Elisee was sijk in sike|nesse [a sikenesse I.] , bi [in I.] which and [Om. A.] he was deed; and Joas, kyng of Israel, ȝede doun to hym, and wepte bifor hym, and seide, My fadir! my fadir! the chare of Israel, and the charietere therof! [verse 15] And Elisee seide to hym, Brynge thou [thou hidir I.] a bouwe and arowis. And whanne he hadde brouȝte to Elisee [verse 16] a bouwe and arowis, he [Heliȝee I.] seide to the kyng of Israel, Set thin hond on the bouwe. And whanne he hadde set [set, that is, whanne he had take the bowe in I.] his hond, Elisee settide [sette I.] his hondis on [upon I.] the hondis of the [verse 17] kyng, and seide, Opene thou the eest

wyndow. And whanne he hadde openyd, Elisee seide, Schete thou an arewe; and he schete [schotte I.] . And Elisee seide, It [This I.] is an arewe of helthe of the Lord, and an arowe of helthe aȝens Sirie; and thou schalt smyte Sirie in Affeth, til thou waste it. [verse 18] And Elisee seide, Take awei the arowis. And whanne he hadde take awei, Elisee seide eft [Om. ELP.] to him, Smyte thou the erthe with a dart. And whanne he [Joas I.] hadde smyte thre [verse 19] tymes, and hadde stonde [stonde stille I.] , the man of God was wrooth [the man of God was wrooth; for it was schewid to Elisee, that if the kyng smytide the erthe ofte without cess|yng, he schulde caste doun Si|rie outirly; netheles Elisee hadde not li|cence to seye to the king the reuelacioun, sithis the Hooly Goost touchith the hertis of profetis in that maner bi which he wole. First it was schewid to Elisee, that if the king smoot ofte the erthe, he schulde do awey Sirie; netheles it was not schewid hou ofte he schulde smyte. But aftir that he smoot thries and ceesside, it was schewid to Elisee, that the king schulde smyte Sirie thre sithis, and in particuler batails. Lire here. C.] aȝens hym [the kyng I.] , and seide, If thou haddist smyte fyue sithis, ether sixe sithis, ethir seuen sithis, thou schuldist haue smyte Sirie `til to [vnto I.] the endyng; now for|sothe thou schalt smyte it thre sithis. [verse 20] Therfor [Thanne I.] Elisee was deed, and thei [men I.] biri|eden hym. And the [Om. IS.] theuys of Moab camen in to the lond in that ȝeer. [verse 21] For|sothe sum men birieden a man, and thei siȝen the [Om. I.] theues [theues niȝ I.] , and thei castiden [casten I.] forth the deed bodi in [in to I.] the sepulcre of Elisee; and whanne it hadde touchid the bonys of Elisee, the man lyuede aȝen, and stood on [upon I.] his feet. [verse 22] Therfor [Thanne I.] Azael, kyng of Sirie, turmentide Israel in alle the daies of Joachaz. [verse 23] And the Lord hadde merci on [upon I.] hem [the sones of Israel I.] , and turnede aȝen to hem for his [the I.] couenaunt, which [that I.] he hadde [hadde maad I.] with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; and he nolde [wolde not I.] distrie hem, nether cast [caste hem I.] awei outirli, til [Om. I.] in to present [this present I.] tyme. [verse 24] Forsothe [And I.] Azael, kyng of Sirie, diede; and Benadad, his sone, regnede for hym. [verse 25] Forsothe [Certis I.] Joas, sone [the sone I.] of Joachas, took awei citees fro the hond of Benadad [Benadad; Jerom seith, that this sone of Azael schal be writun bi d in the ende, and so it is in Ebreu; but Benadab, that ȝede bifor Aza|el, is writun bi b in the ende.
