[verse 1] Forsothe Elisee, the prophete, clepide oon of the sones of prophetis, and seide to hym, Girde thi leendis, and take this

vessel of oile in thin hond, and go in to Ramoth of Galaad. [verse 2] And whanne thou schalt come thidur, thou schalt se Hieu, sone [the sone I.] of Josephat, sone [the sone I.] of Namsi; and thou schalt entre, and schalt [thou schalt I.] reise hym fro the myddis of hise britheren, and thou schalt lede hym in to the [an I.] ynnere closet. [verse 3] And thou schalt holde the vessel of oile, and schalt [thou schalt I.] schede [helde it I.] on his heed, and schalt [thou schalt I.] seie, The Lord seith these thingis, I haue anoyntid thee in to kyng on [upon I.] Israel; and [and thanne I.] thou schalt opene the dore, and schalt flee [flee thenns I.] , and schalt [thou schalt I.] not abide there. [verse 4] Ther|for the ȝong wexynge man, the child of the prophete, ȝede in to Ramoth of Ga|laad, and entride thidur. [verse 5] Lo! sotheli the princes of the oost saten [saten there I.] ; and he seide, A [O! I.] ! prince, Y haue a word to thee. And Hieu seide, To whom of alle vs? And he seide, To thee, thou prince. [verse 6] And he [Hieu I.] roos, and entride into the [a I.] closet. And thilk child schedde [helde I.] oile on [upon I.] the heed of hym, and seide, The Lord God of Israel seith these thingis, Y haue anointid thee in to kyng on [upon I.] the puple of the Lord of Israel; [verse 7] and thou schalt smyte the hows of Achab, thi lord, that Y venge the blood of my seruauntis prophetis, and the blood of alle the [Om. EL.] seruauntis of the Lord, of the hond of Jezabel. [verse 8] And Y schal lese al the hows of Achab, and Y schal sle of the hows of Achab a pissere to the wal, and closid [the closid in prisoun I.] [closid; in prisoun. Lire here. [verse 10] Also doggis schu|len ete Jezabel in the feeld of Jezrael; and `noon schal be [ther schal be noon I.] that schal birie hir. And `the child [whanne he hadde seid these thingis he I.] openyde the dore, and fledde. [verse 11] Forsothe [And I.] Hieu ȝede out to the seruauntis of his lord, whiche seiden to hym, Whether alle thingis ben [ben don I.] riȝtfuli [riȝtful EL.] ? What cam this wood man [wood man; profetis weren arettid woode men, for thei dispisiden the goodis of this world, and for thei spaken ofte siche thingis, that semyden alien to othere men. Lire here. seide to hem, Ȝe knowen the man, and what he spak. [verse 12] And thei answeriden, It is fals; but more [more rather I.] telle thou to [Om. I.] vs [vs what he seide I.] . [verse 13] Therfor thei hastiden, and ech man took his [a I.] mentil, and puttide vndir hise feet bi the licnesse of a trone. And thei sungen with a trumpe, and seiden, Hieu schal regne. [verse 14] Therfor Hieu, sone [the sone I.] of Josephat, sone [the sone I.] of Namsi, swoor [swoor with oothere I.] to gidere [swoore to gi|dere; with the prynces beynge with him, that thei schulden fille feithfully Goddis heeste, of the hows of Achab to be distried. Lire here. C.] aȝens Joram. Forsothe [Certis I.] Joram hadde bisegid Ramoth of Galaad, he and al Israel, aȝens Azael, kyng of Sirie. [verse 15] And he [Joram I.] turnede aȝen to be heelid in Jezrael for woundis [woundis that he hadde I.] ; for men of Sirie hadden smyte hym fiȝtynge aȝens Azael, kyng of Sirie. And Hieu seide, If it plesith [plese I.] ȝou, no man go out fleynge fro the citee, lest he go, and telle in Jezrael. [verse 16] And he [Hieu I.] stiede [stiede up I.] , and ȝede forth in to Jezrael; for Joram was sijk there, and Ocozie, kyng of Juda, cam doun to visite Joram. [verse 17] Ther|for a spiere [waitere I.] , that stood aboue a tour of Jezrael, siȝ the multitude of Hieu com|ynge, and he seide, Y se a multitude. And Joram seide, Take thou a chare, and sende [sende it I. go L.] in to the metyng of hem; and seie the goere [goere thus I.] , Whether alle thingis ben riȝtfuli [riȝtful EL. don iustly I.] ? [verse 18] Therfor [Thanne I.] he, that stiede [ȝede I.] on [upon I.] the chare, ȝede [wente I.] in to the meetyng of hym [Hieu I.] , and seide, The kyng seith these thingis, Whether alle thingis ben peesid? And Hieu seide to hym, What to thee and to pees? Passe thou [thou fro Joram I.] , and sue me. And the aspiere [waitere I.] telde [telde to Joram I.] , and seide, the messanger cam to hem, and he [Om. C.] turneth not aȝen. [verse 19] Also the kyng sente the secounde chare of horsis, and he cam to hem, and seide, The kyng seith these thingis, Whether pees is [is with ȝou I.] ? And Hieu seide, What to thee and to pees? Passe thou [thou forth I.] , and sue me [Om. EL.] . [verse 20] Sotheli [And I.] the aspiere

telde [telde to Joram I.] , and seide, He cam `til to [vnto I.] hem, and he turneth not aȝen; forsothe the goyng [goyng of the duyk I.] is as the goyng of Hieu, sone of Namsi; sothely [certis I.] he goith faste. [verse 21] And Joram seide, Ioyn ȝe a chare. And thei ioyneden his chare. And Joram, kyng of Israel, ȝede out, and Ocozie, kyng of Juda [Juda with him I.] , ȝede out, ech in his chare; and thei ȝeden out [forth I.] in to the meetyng of Hieu, and thei founden hym in the feeld of Naboth of Jezrael. [verse 22] And whanne Joram hadde seyn Hieu, he seide, Hieu [Om. I.] , `is pees [Is ther pees with thee I.] ? And he [Hieu I.] answer|ide, What pees? Ȝit the fornycaciouns [fornyca|ciouns; that is, idolatries, whiche Jezabel, thi modir, brouȝte yn. and poison|yngis; for sche poysonyde goostli; and therfor good pees may not be in Israel, as longe as these ben in strengthe. [verse 23] Forsothe [And I.] Joram turnede his hond, and fledde, and seide to Ocozie, Tresouns! tresouns! Ocozie. [verse 24] For|sothe [Certis I.] Hieu bente a bouwe with the [his I.] hond, and smoot Joram bitwixe the schuldris, and the arowe ȝede out thoruȝ [and thoruȝ ELP. bi I.] his [the M.] herte; and anoon he felde doun in his chare. [verse 25] And Hieu seide to Badacher duyk [the duyk I.] , Take thou awei [awei Joram I.] , cast [and cast I.] forth hym in the feeld of Na|both of Jezrael; for [for whi I.] Y haue mynde, whanne Y and thou saten in the chare, and suede Achab, the fadir of hym [this Joram I.] , that the Lord reiside on [bi Helie upon I.] hym [Achab I.] this birthun, and seide, [verse 26] If [Wher I.] not for the blood of Naboth, and for the blood of hise sones, which [the which I.] Y siȝ ȝis|tirdai [ȝistirdai sched out I.] , seith the Lord, Y schal ȝeeld to thee in this feeld, seith the Lord. Now therfor do [do thou I.] awei him [Joram I.] , and cast forth him in the feeld, bi the word of the Lord. [verse 27] For|sothe Ocozie, king of Juda, siȝ this, and fledde bi the weie of the hows of the [a I.] gardyn; and Hieu pursuede hym, and seide, Also smyte ȝe this man in his chare. And thei [men I.] smytiden [smoten I. smiten EL. smetin P.] hym [Ocozie I.] in the stiyng [stiyng up I.] of Gaber, which [that I.] is bisidis Jeblaam; and he [Ocozie I.] fledde into Mageddo, and was deed there. [verse 28] And hise seruauntis puttiden hym on [upon I.] his chare, and brouȝten hym [Om. plures.] in to

Jerusalem; and thei birieden hym in a sepulcre with hise fadris, in the citee of Dauid. [verse 29] In the eleuenthe ȝeer of Joram, sone [the sone I.] of Achab, kyng of Israel, Ocozie regnede on [upon I.] Juda. [verse 30] And Hieu cam in to Jezrael. Forsothe whanne his entryng was herd, Jezabel peyntide hir iȝen with oynement of wymmen [lecherouse wymmen I.] , and ournede hir [verse 31] heed; and sche bihelde bi a wyndow Hieu entrynge bi the ȝate, and sche seide, Whe|ther pees may be to Zamri [wher pees may be to Zamry; oure doctouris ex|pownen this comynly bi negacioun thus, as Zamry hadde not pees, so nether thou schalt haue pees; but this exposicioun acordith not to the lettre bifor goinge, therfor Ebreis ex|pownen thus, wher pees may be, that is, Y preye, that thou haue pees with me. Zamry killide his lord; as if sche seide, this is not newe, that thou killidist Joram thi lord, for Zamry dide in liyk maner, and netheles Achab, his sone, regnyde in pees aftir hym; so it may be to thee. And tweyne ether thre chaum|birleyns bowiden hem silf to hym [Hieu I.] , and seiden to hym, This is thilke Jezabel. [verse 33] And he seide to hem, Caste ȝe hir doun [doun heedling I.] . And thei `castiden doun hir [puttiden hir doun heedling I.] ; and the wal was bispreynt with [of hir I.] blood, and the howues of horsis, that `to tredden [trediden I.] hir. [verse 34] And whanne he [Hieu I.] hadde entrid to ete and drynke, he seide, Go ȝe, and se [se ȝe I.] thilke cursid womman, and birie ȝe hir, for sche is [was I.] a kyngis douȝter. [verse 35] And whanne thei [men I.] hadden go [gon forth I.] to birie hir, thei founden not [not of hir I.] , no but the sculle, and the feet, and the [verse 36] endis of hondis [hir hondis I.] ; and thei turneden aȝen, and telden to hym [Hieu I.] . And Hieu seide, It [This I.] is the word of the Lord, which [that I.] he spak bi his seruaunt, Elie `of Thesbi [Thesbiten I.] , and seide, Doggis schulen ete the fleisch of Jezabel [verse 37] in the feeld of Jezrael; and the fleischis of Jezabel schulen be as `a toord [dunge I.] on [upon I.] the face of erthe [the erthe I.] in the feeld of Jezrael, so that men passynge forth [forth therby I.] seie, Lo! this is thilke Jezabel.
