[verse 1] And lo! a man of God cam fro Juda, bi the word of the Lord, in to Bethel, while Jeroboam stood on [upon I.] the auter, `and castide [castinge I.] encence. [verse 2] And `the man of God [he I.] criede aȝens the auter, bi the word of the Lord, and seide, Auter! auter! the Lord seith these thingis, Lo! a sone, Josias by name, shal be borun to [of K.] the hows of Da|uid; and he schal offre on [upon I.] thee the preestis [offre on thee the prestis, etc.; for abho|mynacioun of idolatrie, and this was accept, ether plesaunt, to God, as sa|crifice. [verse 3] And he ȝaf a signe [token I.] in that dai, `and seide [seiynge I.] , This schal be `the signe [a token to ȝou I.] that the Lord spak, Lo! the auter schal be kit, and the aische which [that I.] is `there ynne [in the auter I.] , schal be sched out. [verse 6] And the kyng seide to the man of God, Biseche thou the face of thi [the I.] Lord God [thi God I.] , and preie thou for me, that myn hond be restorid to me. And the man of God preiede the face of God [the Lord A sec. m.] ; and the hond of the king turnede aȝen to hym, and it was maad as it was bifore. [verse 7] Sotheli [And I.] the kyng spak to the man of God, Come thou hoom with me, that thou ete, and Y schal ȝyue ȝiftis to thee. [verse 8] And the man of God seide to the kyng, Thouȝ thou schalt ȝyue to me the half part of thin hows, Y schal not come with thee, nether Y schal ete breed, nether Y schal [verse 9] drynke watir in this place; `for so [for|sothe I.] it is [was K.] comaundid [boden I.] to me bi the word of the Lord, comaundinge [biddynge I.] , Thou schalt not ete breed, nether thou schalt drynke water [drynke watir; with idola|trours in this place. C.] , nether thou schalt turne aȝen bi the weie bi which thou camest. [verse 10] Therfor he ȝede bi another weie, and turnede not aȝen bi the weie, bi which he cam in to Bethel. [verse 11] Forsothe sum [an I.] elde profete dwellide [dwellide thanne I.] in Bethel, to whom hise sones camen, and telden to hym alle the werkis whiche the man of God hadde do in that dai in Beth|el; and thei telden to her fader the wordis whiche he [the man of God I.] spak to the kyng. [verse 12] And the fadir of hem seide to hem, Bi what weie ȝede he? Hise sones schewiden to hym the weie, bi which the man of God ȝede, that cam fro Juda. [verse 13] And he seide to hise sones, Sadle ȝe an asse to me. [verse 18] Which [And he I.] seide to hym, And Y am a profete lijk thee; and an aungel spak to me bi the word of the Lord, and seide, Lede aȝen hym in to thin hows, that he ete breed, and drynke watir. [verse 23] And whanne he hadde ete and drunke, the pro|phete, whom he hadde brouȝt aȝen, sadlide his asse. [verse 24] And whanne he hadde go [go forth I.] , a lioun foond hym in the weye, and killide [and killide; hou myche schal God pu|nysche the greuouse synnes of wick|id men, sithen he punyschith the litil synne of an hooly man by deth. [verse 32] For sotheli the word schal come, which [that I.] he bifor seide in the word of the Lord, aȝens the auter which [that I.] is in Bethel, and aȝens alle the templis of hiȝ placis, that [whiche I.] ben in the citees of Samarie. After these wordis Jeroboam turnede not aȝen [awey IKLMOSX.] [Jeroboam turnede not aȝen, etc.; for thouȝ Jero|boam siȝ the forseid signes in the auter kit, and in his hond dried, netheles he ȝede not awey fro his malice. Josephus touchith the cause therof, and seith, that the false pro|fete tauȝte Jero|boam, that the forseid signes schewiden not Goddis vertu, for he that ȝaf the signe, was slayn of a lioun, a fals spekere; also he seide that the auter was brokun, for the birthun of sa|crifices put theronne, and that the kyngis hond was dry|ed, for the trauel of of|fring; and whanne he restide fro that trauel, his hond turnede aȝen to the formere staat, bi the vertu of kynde.
