CAP. XI.
[verse 1] Forsothe kyng Salomon louyde bren|nyngli [ful myche I.] many alien wymmen, and [also he louyde I.] the douȝtir of Pharao, and wymmen of Moab, and Amonytis [of Amon I.] , and Ydumeis [of Ydumee I.] , and Sydo|neis [of Sidonye I.] , [verse 2] and Etheis [of Ethey I.] ; of the folkis of whiche the Lord seide to the sones of Israel, Ȝe schulen not entre to tho folkis, nether ony of hem schulen entre to ȝou; for most cer|teynli thei schulen turne awei ȝoure hertis, that ȝe sue the goddis of hem. Therfor [And so I.] kyng Salomon was couplid to these wym|men, bi moost brennyng loue. [verse 3] And wyues as queenys weren seuene hundrid to hym, and thre hundrid secundarie wyues; and the wymmen turneden awey [turneden awey, etc., fro the loue of God, and fro keping of his heestis. [verse 4] And whanne he was thanne eld, his herte was bischrewid bi wymmen, that he suede alien goddis; and his herte was not perfit with his Lord God, as the herte of Dauid, his fadir, `was perfit [Om. [verse 5] But Salomon wor|schipide Astartes [Salomon worschipide Astartes, etc.; Salomon was not so fonned, that he bi|leuyde ony thing of God|hed to be in the idols, but he worschipide idols, for he nolde offende hise wyues. So Adam eet of the tre for|bedun at the tising of his wiyf, lest he schulde make her sory, as Austyn seith. For as Poul seith in I Pistle to Tymo. ii. co. Adam was not disseyued, that he bileuyde, that by eting of that tre he schulde haue kunnyng of good and of yuel, as the serpent bihiȝte. Lire here. C.] , the goddesse of Sido|neis, and Chamos, the god of Moabitis, [verse 6] and Moloch, the idol of Amonytis; and Salomon dide that, that pleside not bifor the Lord, and he fillide [fulfillide I.] not that he suede the Lord, as Dauid, his fadir, dide [Om. I.] . [verse 7] Thanne Salomon bildide a temple to Cha|mos, the idol of Moab, in the [an I.] hil [in the hil; that is, of Olyuete. Lire here. [verse 8] And bi this maner he dide to alle hise alien wyues, that [the whiche I.] brenten encencis, and offriden to her goddis. [verse 9] Therfor the Lord was wrooth to Salomon, for his soule was turned awei fro the Lord God of Israel; that apperide [verse 10] to Salomon [him I.] the secounde tyme, and co|maundide of this [his I.] word, that he schulde
