[verse 1] Therfor men of Cariathiarym camen, and ledden aȝen the arke of the Lord, and brouȝten [thei brouȝten I.] it in to the hows of Amynadab in Gabaa. Sotheli [And I.] thei halewiden Eleazar his sone, that he schulde kepe the ark of the Lord. [verse 2] And it was doon, fro which [that I.] dai `the arke of the Lord [that the Lordis arke I.] dwellide in Caryathiarym, daies [the daies I.] weren multiplied [daies were multiplied, in whiche Samuel excitide the puple to good. [verse 3] For|sothe [And I.] Samuel spak to al the hows of Is|rael, and seide, If in al ȝoure herte ȝe turnen aȝen to the Lord, do ȝe awei alien goddis, Balym and Astaroth, fro the myddis of ȝou; and make ȝe redi ȝoure hertis to the Lord, and serue ȝe hym aloone; and he schal delyuere ȝou fro the hond of Fi|listeis [the Filisteis I.] . DK.] drowen watir, and shedden [helden it I.] out in the `siȝt of the Lord [Lordis siȝt I.] ; and thei fastiden in that day, and seiden, Lord, we synneden [han synned I.] to thee. And Samuel demyde the sones [hous I.] of Israel in Masphat. [verse 7] And Filisteis [the Filisteis I.] herden that the sones of Israel weren gaderid [gaderid to gidere I.] in Mas|phat; and the princes of Filisteis stieden [stieden up I.] to Israel. And whanne the sones of Is|rael hadden herd this, thei dredden of the face of Filisteis. [verse 8] And `thei seiden [Israel criede I.] to Sa|muel, Ceesse thou not to crye for vs to oure Lord God, that he saue vs fro the `hoond of Filisteis [Philistees hoond I.] . [verse 9] Forsothe [And I.] Samuel took o soukynge lomb, and offride that [it I.] hool in to brent sacrifice to the Lord. And Sa|muel criede to the Lord for Israel; and the Lord herde hym. [verse 12] Forsothe [And I.] Samuel took o stoon, and puttide [putte I.] it bitwixe Masphat, and bi|twixe [Om. I.] Sen; and he clepide the name of that place The stoon of help. And he seide, Hidir to the Lord helpide [hath helpid I.] vs. [verse 13] And Filisteis [the Filisteis I.] weren maad low, and addiden [thei addiden I.] no more to come in to the termes of Is|rael. And so the `hond of the Lord [Lordis hond I.] was maad on [upon the I.] Filisteis in alle the daies of Sa|muel. Samuel demyde Israel in [Om. I.] alle the daies of his lijf [of his liyf; that is, til to the ordeynyng and conferm|yng of Saul. C.] , that is, `til to [in to E.] the ordeynyng [verse 16] `and confermyng [Om. N.] of Saul [gloss omitted in GIQSX pr. m. b.] ; and he ȝede [wente I.] [and he ȝede, etc. bi his owne trauel and costis to deme the peple in couen|able places, as it seid in xii. co. Lire here. C.] bi `alle ȝeeris [ech ȝeer I.] , and cumpasside Bethel, and Galgal, and Masphat, and he demyde Is|rael in the forseid places. [verse 17] And he turnede aȝen in to Ramatha, for his hows was there; and he demyde Israel there, and he bildide there also an auter to the Lord.
