[verse 1] And it was doon in tho daies Filisteis camen to gidere in to batel; for [forsothe I.] Israel ȝede out aȝens Filisteis [the Filisteis I.] in to batel, and settiden [Israel sette I.] tentis bisidis the stoon of help. Forsothe [And the I.] Filisteis camen in to Aphet, [verse 2] and maden redi scheltrun aȝens Israel. Sotheli [And I.] whanne the batel was bigunnun, Israel turned backis [the backis I.] to Filisteis; and as [as a I.] foure thousynde of [Om. I.] men [men of Israel I.] weren slayn in that batel `euery where [ouer al I.] bi feeldis [the feeldis I.] ; and the puple of Israel turnede aȝen to tentis [her tentis I.] . And the grettere men in birthe of Israel seiden, Whi hath the Lord smyte vs to dai bifore Filisteis [the Filisteis I.] ? Brynge we to vs fro Silo the arke of boond [the boond I.] of pees of the Lord, and come it in to the myddis of vs, that it saue vs fro the hond of oure enemyes. [verse 4] Therfor the puple sente in to Silo, and thei token fro thennus the arke of boond [the boond I.] of pees of the Lord of oostis, `that sat on [sittinge upon I.] cherubyn. And Ophym [Ophny DIX sec. m. PE.] and Fynees, twei [the two I.] sones of Heli, weren with the arke of boond [the boond I.] of pees of the Lord. [verse 5] And whanne the arke of boond of pees of the Lord hadde come in to the castels [tentis I.] , al Israel criede [for joie criede I.] with grete cry, and the erthe sownede. [verse 6] And Filisteis [the Filisteis I.] herden the vois of cry [her cry I.] , and seiden [thei seiden I.] , What [And what I.] is this vois of greet cry in the castels [tentis I.] of Ebrews? [verse 15] Forsothe [And I.] Heli was of foure score ȝeer and eiȝtene, and hise iȝen dasi|widen [derkeden I.] , and he myȝte not se. [verse 16] And he [the man I.] seide to Heli, Y am [am he I.] that cam fro batel [the batel I.] , and Y am [am he I.] that flei [fledde I.] to dai fro the schel|trun. To whom Ely seide, My sone, what is doon [ther don I.] ? [verse 19] Forsothe [And I.] his douȝter in lawe, `the wijf of Finees [Finees wijf I.] , was with childe, and niȝ the child bering; and whanne `the message was herd [sche herde bi the messangere I.] that the arke of God was takun, and that hir fadir in lawe was deed, and hir hosebonde, sche bowide hir silf [silf doun I.] , and childide; for sodeyn sorewis felden in to hir. [verse 20] Sotheli [And I.] in that moment of hir deeth, wymmen [thei I.] that stoden aboute hir, seiden to hir, Drede thou not, for thou hast childid a sone. And sche answeride not to hem, for [Om. I.] nether `sche perseyuede [toke heede I.] . [verse 21] And sche clepide the child Ichaboth [Icaboth; that is, without glorie. Lire here.
