[verse 2] Therfor [Thanne I.] it was doon in a dai, Heli lay in his bed, and hise iȝen dasewiden, and he myȝte not se the lanterne of God [the lanterne of God. Comyn Latyn biblis han thus, and hise iȝen dase|widen, and he myȝte not se the lanterne of God, bifor that it was quenchid, but certis this lettre is cor|rupt, as the Maistre of Stories and Lire here witnessen, and the book of Ebreu ques|tiouns; therfor in Ebreu it is had thus, and hise iȝen dase|widen, and he myȝte not se; the lanterne of the Lord was not ȝit quench|id. [verse 3] Forsothe [And I.] Samuel slepte in the temple [slepte in the temple; that is, in a chaumbir bisidis the temple, where dekenes weren that kepten the temple. Lire here. C.] of the Lord, where the ark of God was. [verse 4] And the Lord clepide Samuel; and he answeride and seide, Lo! Y [Y am redi I.] . [verse 5] And he ran to Hely, and seide to hym, Lo! Y; for thou clepidist me. Which [And I.] Hely seide, Y clepide not thee; turne thou [Om. DGIKMNOW sec. m.] aȝen and slepe. And he [Samuel I.] ȝede and slepte. [verse 6] And the Lord addide eft to clepe Samuel; and Sa|muel roos, and ȝede to Hely, and seide, Lo! Y [Y here I.] ; for thou clepidist me. And Heli answeride, Y clepide not thee, my sone; turne thou aȝen and slepe. [verse 7] Forsothe [Sothly I.] Samuel knew not ȝit the Lord [knewe not ȝit the Lord; that is, the maner of spek|ing of the Lord with profetis. Lire here. [verse 8] And the Lord addide, and clepide [he clepide I.] ȝit Samuel the thridde tyme; `which Sa|muel [the which I.] [verse 9] roos [roos up I.] and ȝede [wente I.] to Heli, and seide, Lo! Y; for thou clepidist me. Therfor [Thanne I.] Heli vndirstood, that the Lord clepide [had clepid I.] the child; and Heli [he I.] seide to Samuel, Go [Go thou I.] and slepe; and if he clepith thee aftir|ward,

thou schalt seie, Speke thou, Lord, for thi seruaunt herith. Therfor [Thanne I.] Samuel ȝede and slepte in his place. [verse 10] And the Lord cam, and stood, and clepide as he hadde clepid the secunde tyme, Samuel, Samuel. And Samuel seide, Speke thou, Lord, for thi seruaunt herith. [verse 11] And the Lord seide to Samuel, Lo! Y make a word [a word; that is, a thing sig|nefied bi a word. C.] in [to be knowen in I.] Israel, which [the which I.] word who euer schal here, bothe hise eeris schulen rynge [tyncle I.] [rynge; that is, he schal be astonyed for wundir and drede. Lire here. C.] [verse 12] In that dai Y schal reise [reise up I.] aȝens Heli alle thingis, whiche [that I.] Y spak [haue spoken up I.] on his hows; Y schal bigynne, and Y schal ende. [verse 13] For Y biforseide to hym, that Y schulde deme his hows with outen ende for wickid|nesse [the wickidnesse theroff I.] ; for he [Hely I.] knew, that hise sones diden vnworthili, and he chastiside not hem. [verse 14] Therfor Y swoor [haue swore I.] to the hows of Heli, that the wickidnesse of his hows [meynee or hows I.] schal not be clensid [schal not be clensid, as to peyne ordeyn|ed, thouȝ it were clensid as to synne and euerlastinge peyne, in hem that repent|iden verily. [verse 15] Forsothe [And thanne I.] Samuel slepte til the morewtid, and he openyde the doris of the hows of the Lord; and Samuel dredde to schewe the reuelacioun to Heli. [verse 16] Therfor Heli clepide Samuel, and seide, Samuel, my sone. And he an|sweride and seide, Y am redi. [verse 17] And Heli axide hym, What is the word which [that I.] the Lord spak [hath spoke I.] to thee? Y preye thee, hide thou [it I.] not fro me; God do to thee `these thingis [alle these yuelis I.] , and encreesse [encresse he I.] these thingis, if thou hidist fro me a word of alle wordis [the wordis I.] that ben seid to thee. [verse 18] And Samuel schew|ide to hym [Hely I.] alle the wordis, and `hidde not [he hidde noon I.] fro hym. And Heli answeride, He is the [Om. I.] Lord; do he that [Om. C.] , that is good in hise iȝen. [verse 19] Forsothe [Certis I.] Samuel encreeside, and the Lord was with hym, and noon of alle hise [the I.] wordis felde [felle voide I.] in to erthe [in to erthe; that is, in veyn, for al was fillid. Lire here. C.] [verse 20] And al Israel fro Dan to Bersabee knew, that feithful Samuel was a profete of the Lord. [verse 21] And the Lord addide `that he schulde [to I.] appere
