CAP. XV.

[verse 1] And Samuel seide to Saul, The Lord sente me, that Y schulde anoynte thee in to `kyng on [a kyng upon I.] his puple Israel; now therfor here thou the vois `of the Lord [Om. I.] . [verse 2] The Lord of oostis seith thes thingis, Y haue rikenyd [brouȝt to mynde I.] what euer thingis Amalech dide [hath do I.] to Israel; hou Amalech aȝenstood Israel in the weie, whanne he [Israel I.] stiede [stiede up I.] from E|gipt. [verse 3] Now therfor go thou, and sle Ama|lech, and distruye thou alle `thingis of hym [his thingis I.] ; spare thou not hym, and [ne I.] coueyte thou not [Om. I.] ony thing of hise thingis; but sle thou fro man `til to [vnto EL.] womman, and a [Om. F sec. vice. EIPXb.] litil child, and soukynge, an [Om. F sec. vice. DEIPXb.] oxe, and scheep, and camel, and asse. [verse 4] Therfor [And so I.] Saul comaundide to [Om. I.] the puple [puple to be gadrid to gidre I.] , and he noumbride hem as lambren twei hundrid thousynde of foot men, and ten thousynde of men of Juda. [verse 5] And whanne Saul cam to the citee of Amalech, he made redi buyschementis in the stronde. [verse 6] And Saul seide to Cyney [the peple of Cyney I.] [Saul seide to Cyney, that is, to hem that camen of Jetro, and weren with the sones of Israel. Lire here. C.] , Go ȝe [ȝe henns I.] , departe ȝe [ȝe awey I.] , and go ȝe awei [forth I.] fro Amalech, lest perauen|ture Y wlappe thee in with hem; for thou didist mercy with alle the sones of Israel, whanne thei stieden [stieden up I.] fro Egipt. And Cyney departide fro the myddis of Amalech. [verse 7] And Saul smoot Amalech fro Euila, til [to E. tho L.] thou [he A sec. m. X sec. m. EIPb.] come [came I. cam P.] to Sur [Assur F sec. m. EGKLNPQRbX sec. m.] , which is aȝens [euen aȝens I.] Egipt. [verse 8] And he [Saul I.] took Agag quyke [aliyue I.] , the kyng of Amalech; sotheli [and I.] he killide bi the [Om. I.] scharpnesse of swerd alle the comyn puple. [verse 9] And Saul and the [his I.] puple sparide Agag, and the [his I.] beste flockis of scheep, and of grete beestis, and clothis, and rammes, and alle thingis that weren faire; and thei nolden [wolden not I.] destrie tho; sotheli [but I.] what euer thing was vijl, and repreuable, thei dis|trieden this [that thing I. it EL.] . [verse 10] Forsothe [Sothly I.] the word of the [verse 11] Lord was maad to Samuel, and seide, It

repentith me [It repentith me. Repent|ing, whanne it berith chaunge|ablete, may not be in God, netheles God is seid to re|pente, for he hath him at the maner of a man repent|inge, whanne he distrieth that that he made; so it is in this poynt, for he demyde Saul to be cast awey, whom he reiside bi|for; netheles thilke chaunge|ablete, is onely in creaturis, for God bi vn|chaungeable wille, makith chaungeable thingis. Lire here. C.] , that Y made Saul kyng [a kyng C pr. m.] ; for he forsook [hath forsaken I.] me, and fillide [hath not fulfillid I.] not my wordis in werk. And Samuel was sory, and he criede to the Lord in al the [that I.] nyȝt. [verse 12] And whanne Samuel hadde rise [rise up I.] bi nyȝt to go eerly to Saul, it was teld to Samuel, that Saul hadde come in to Carmel, and hadde reisid [reisid up I.] to hym a signe of victorye; and that [Om. C.] he hadde turned aȝen [aȝen fro Amalech I.] , and hadde passid [passid forth I.] , and hadde go doun in to Galgala. Therfor [Thanne I.] Samuel cam to Saul, and Saul offride brent sacrifice to the Lord of the cheef thingis of preies, whiche he hadde brouȝt fro Amalech. [verse 13] And the while Samuel cam to Saul, Saul seide to hym, Blessid be thou of the Lord, Y haue fillid [fulfillid I.] the `word of the Lord [Lordis word I.] . [verse 14] And Samuel seide, And [Om. DF pr. m. GMNQWX.] what is the [this BCI.] vois of flockis, that sowneth in myn eeris, and of grete beestis, whiche Y here? [verse 15] And Saul seide, Thei [Men I.] brouȝten tho fro Amalech, for the puple sparide the betere [beste I.] scheep and grete beestis, that tho schulden be offrid to thi [the A pr. m. I.] Lord God; sotheli [and I.] we killiden the tothere beestis. [verse 16] Forsothe [And I.] Samuel seide to Saul, Suffre thou me, and Y schal schewe to thee what thingis the Lord spak [hath spoke I.] to me in the [this I.] nyȝt. And he [Saul I.] seide to Samuel, Speke thou. [verse 17] And Samuel seide, Whether not, whanne thou were litil in thin [thin owne I.] iȝen, thou were maade heed in the lynages of Israel, and the Lord anoyntide thee in to [verse 18] kyng [a kyng I.] on [upon I.] Israel; and the Lord sente [sende I.] thee in to the weie, and seide, Go thou, and sle the synneris of Amalech, and thou schalt fiȝte aȝens hem `til to [vnto I. into EL.] sleyng [the sleyng plures.] of hem. [verse 19] Whi therfor herdist thou not the vois of the Lord, but thou were turned to prey [the prey I.] , and didist yuel in the `iȝen of the Lord [Lordis siȝt I.] ? [verse 20] And Saul seide to Samuel, Ȝhis [This EIL.] , Y herde [haue herd I.] the `vois of the Lord [Lordis vois I.] , and Y ȝede [haue go I.] in the weie, bi which the Lord sente [sende I.]

[verse 21] For|sothe [And I.] the puple took [hath take I.] of the prey, scheep and oxun, the firste [cheef I.] fruytis of tho thingis, that ben slayn, that thei make sacrifice to her Lord God in Galgalis. [verse 22] And Samuel seide, Whether the Lord wole brent sacri|fices, ethir slayn sacrifices, and not more [more rather I.] that me obeie to the vois of the Lord? For [forsothe I.] obedience [obedience to him I.] is betere than sacrifices, and to `herkene Goddis [take heede to his I.] word is more than to [verse 23] offre the ynnere fatnesse of rammes; for it is as the synne of mawmetrie to `fiȝte aȝens Goddis heest [repugne the word of God I. fiȝte aȝens Goddis heestis K.] [aȝenus Goddis heest, whanne a man defend|ith his owne synne. Lire here. C.] , and it is as the wickidnesse of ydolatrie to nyle [nat I.] ascente to Goddis heest [consente to it I.] . Therfor for that [thi I.] , that thou castidist [hast throwen I.] awey the word of the Lord, the Lord castide [hath throwe I.] thee awei, that thou be not kyng. [verse 24] And Saul seide to Samuel, Y synnede [haue synned I.] , for Y brak [haue broke I.] the word of the Lord, and thi wordis; `and Y dredde [dredinge I. Y dredde K.] the puple, `and obeiede [obeiynge I.] to `the vois of hem [her vois I.] ; [verse 25] but now, Y biseche [biseche thee I.] , bere thou my synne, and turne thou aȝen with me, that Y wor|schipe the Lord. [verse 26] And Samuel seide to Saul, Y schal not turne aȝen with thee, for thou castidist [hast throwen I.] awey the word of the Lord, and the Lord castide [hath cast I.] awei thee, that thou be not king on [upon I.] Israel. [verse 27] And Samuel turnede [turnede him I.] to go a wey; sotheli [and I.] Saul took the ende [hemme I.] of the mentil of Sa|muel, which [the which I.] also was to-rent. [verse 28] And Sa|muel seide to hym [Saul I.] , The Lord hath kit the rewme of Israel fro thee to dai, and ȝaf [he hath ȝouen I.] it to thi neiȝbore betere than thou; [verse 29] certis the ouercomere in Israel schal not spare [spare hem that wil not obeie to him I.] , and [for C.] he schal [wil I.] not be bowid bi re|pentaunce; for he is not man [a man I.] , `that is, chaungeable [Om. I.] , that he do repentaunce. [verse 30] And Saul seide, Y synnede [haue synned I.] ; but now onoure thou me bifor the eldere men of my puple, and bifor Israel, and turne thou

aȝen with me, that Y worschipe thi Lord God. [verse 31] Therfor Samuel turnede aȝen [Samuel turn|ede aȝen; he wolde do wor|schip to Saul, as long as he was suffrid of God in the rewme, and that he schulde sle Agag, that was kept ȝit quyk. Lire here. C.] , and suede Saul, and Saul worschipide the Lord. [verse 32] And Samuel seide, Brynge ȝe to me Agag, the kyng of Amalech. And Agag `moost fat [the moost fat man I.] tremblynge was brouȝt to hym. And Agag seide, Whether thus departith [departe E. departid L.] bitter deeth? [verse 33] And Samuel seide, As thi swerd made [hath made I.] wymmen with out fre children, so thi modir schal be with out fre children among wymmen. And Samuel kittide [hewide I.] hym [Agag I.] in to gobetis bifor the Lord in Gal|galis. [verse 34] Forsothe [And I.] Samuel ȝede in to Ra|matha; sotheli [and I.] Saul stiede [wente up I.] in to his hows in [in to plures.] Gabaa. [verse 35] And Samuel siȝ no more Saul [Samuel siȝ no more Saul, in the kingis cloth and comyn staat. Lire here. C.] `til to [vnto I. into L.] the dai of his deeth; netheles Sa|muel biweilide Saul [Samuel bi|weilide Saul, not that the sentence of the Lord schulde be chaungid aȝenus him, but Samuel hadde compassioun of his soule, lest it were dampned with|outen ende, and Samuel dredde, lest the puple of Israel schulde be punyschid for the synnes of Saul.
