CAP. VIII.

[verse 1] And the men of Effraym seiden to hym [Gedeon I.] , What is this thing, which [that I.] thou woldist do, that thou clepidist not vs, whanne thou ȝedist to batel aȝens Ma|dian? And thei chidden [chidden with him I.] strongli, and almest [wel nyȝ I.] diden [thei diden to him I.] violence. [verse 2] To whiche [whom I.] he answeride, `What sotheli [And what I.] siche thing myȝte Y do [haue do I.] , what maner thing ȝe diden [han do I.] ? Whe|thir a reisyn of Effraym is not betere than the vindagis of Abiezer? [verse 3] And the Lord bitook [hath bitake I.] in to ȝoure hondis the princes of Madian, Oreb and Zeb. What sich thing myȝte Y do [haue do I.] , what maner thing ȝe diden [han do I.] ? And whanne he [Gedeon I.] hadde spoke this thing, the spirit of hem [Effraym I.] restide, bi which thei bolneden aȝens hym. [verse 4] And whanne Gedeon hadde come to Jordan, he passide it with thre hundrid men, that weren with hym; and for weerynesse thei myȝten not pursue hem that fledden. [verse 5] And

he [Gedeon I.] seide to the men of Socoth, Y biseche, ȝyue ȝe looues [bred I.] to the puple, which [that I.] is with me; for thei failiden greetli, that we moun pursue [thanne pursue I.] Zebee and Salmana, kyngis of Madian. [verse 6] The [And the I.] princes of Socoth an|sweriden in scorne, In hap the pawmes of the hondis of Zebee and of Salmana ben in thin hond [hondis I.] , and therfor thou axist, that we ȝyue looues to thin oost. [verse 7] To whiche [whom I.] he [Gedeon I.] seide, Therfor, whanne the Lord schal bitake Zebee and Salmana in to myn hondis, and whanne Y schal turne aȝen ouercomere in pees, Y schal to-reende ȝoure fleischis [fleshe I.] with the [Om. I.] thornes and breris of deseert [the deseert I.] . [verse 8] And he [Gedeon I.] stiede [stiede up I.] fro thennus, and cam [ȝede S.] in to Phanuel; and he spak lijk thingis to men of that place, to whom also thei answeriden, as the men of Socoth hadden answerid. [verse 9] And so [Om. plures.] he [Gedeon I.] seide to hem, Whanne Y schal turne aȝen ouer|comere in pees, Y schal distrie this tour. [verse 10] Forsothe [And I.] Zebee and Salmana restiden with al her oost; for [and I.] fiftene thousynde men leften of alle the cumpenyes of the `puplis of the eest [eest puplis I.] , whanne an hundrid and twenti thousynde of `fiȝteris and of men [fiȝtynge men I.] drawynge [ledinge S.] out swerd weren slayn. [verse 11] And Gedeon stiede [stiede up I.] bi the weye of hem that dwelliden in tabernaclis at the eest coost of Nobe and of Lethoa, and smoot [he smoot I.] the `tentis of enemyes [enemyes tentis I.] , that weren sikur, and supposiden not ony thing of aduersite. [verse 12] And Zebee and Salmana fledden, whiche [whom I.] Gedeon pursuede and took, whanne al `the oost of hem [her oost I.] was disturblid. [verse 13] And he [Gedeon I.] turnede aȝen fro batel bifor the `risyng of [verse 14] the sunne [bifor the rising of the sunne. In E|breu it is, fro the hiȝnesse of the sunne, that is, bifor the goyng doun of the sunne, while the sunne was ȝit an hiȝ, as Ebrews ex|pownen. Lire here. C.] [sunne risyng I.] , and took [he took I.] a child of the men of Socoth; and he axide hym the names of the princes and eldere [of the eldere I.] men of Socoth; and he [Gedeon I.] descryuede seuene and seuenti men in noumbre. [verse 15] And he cam to Socoth, and seide to hem, Lo Zebee and Salmana [Salmana ben taken I.] ! of whiche ȝe vpbreideden me, and seiden, In

hap the hondis of Zebee and of Salmana ben in thin hondis, and therfor thou axist, that we ȝyue looues to men, that ben weeri and failiden. [verse 16] Therfor Gedeon took the eldere men of the citee, and thornes [also thornes I.] and breris of deseert, and he [Om. S.] to-rente with tho, and al to-brak the men of Socoth; [verse 17] also he [Gedeon I.] destriede the tour of Phanuel, whanne the dwelleris of the citee weren slayn. [verse 18] And he seide to Zebee and Salma|na [to Salmana I.] , What maner men weren thei, whiche [that I.] ȝe killiden in Thabor? Whiche [The whiche I.] answer|iden, Thei weren lijk thee, and oon of hem was as the sone of a kyng. [verse 19] To whiche [whom I.] he [Gedeon I.] seide, Thei weren my bri|theren, the sones of my modir; the Lord lyueth, if ȝe hadden saued hem, Y `nolde sle [wolde not haue slawe I.] ȝou. [verse 20] And he [Gedeon I.] seide to Jepther, his firste gendrid [goten I.] sone, Rise thou, and sle hem. Which [And Jepther I.] drow not swerd [his swerd I.] ; for he dredde, for he was ȝit a child. [verse 21] And Zebee and Salmana seiden [seiden to Gedeon I.] , Ryse thou, and falle on [into I.] vs; for thou art bi the age and strengthe of man. Gedeon roos, and killide Zebee and Salmana, and took [he took I.] the ournementis, and bellis [the bellis I.] , with [bi I.] whiche the neckis of kyngis [the kyngis I.] camels ben wont to be maad fair. [verse 22] And alle the [Om. plures.] men of Israel seiden to Ge|deon, Be thou lord of vs, thou, and thi sone, and the sone of thi sone; for thou deliueridist [hast delyuered I.] vs fro the hond [power I.] of Madian. [verse 23] To whiche [whom I.] he seide, Y schal not be lord of ȝou, nethir my sone schal be lord on ȝou, but the Lord schal be lord [lord on ȝou I.] . [verse 24] And he [Gedeon I.] seide to hem, Y axe oon axyng of ȝou, ȝyue ȝe to me the eere ryngis of ȝoure prey; for Ismaelitis weren wont to haue goldun eere ryngis. [verse 25] Whiche [The whiche I.] answeriden, We schulen ȝyue moost [thee these ful I.] gladli. And thei spredden forth [for A.] a mentil on [upon I.] the erthe, and castiden [therupon thei castiden I.] forth therynne [Om. I.] `eere ryngis [the eere ryngis I.] [verse 26] of the prey; and the weiȝte of `eere ryngis [the eere ryngis I.] axid [that he axid I.] was a thousynde and seuene hun|drid siclis of gold, with out ournementis

and brochis and cloth of purpur, whiche the kyngis of Madian weren wont to vse, and outakun goldun bies of camels. [verse 27] And Gedeon made therof ephot [a prestis coope I.] , that is, a preestis cloth, `and propir [purpur N.] cloth [Om. W.] of the hiȝeste preest [biȝsshop K. gloss omitted in BIX.] , and he puttide [putte I.] it in his citee Ephra; and al Israel diden forny|cacioun, `that is ydolatrye [Om. BIX.] , ther ynne; and it was maad to Gedeon and to al his hows [meynee I.] in to fallyng [in to falling, for he synnede therynne, and therfor his hows was al|mest doon awey aftir his deth, as in ix c^o. C.] [verse 28] Forsothe [But I.] Madian was maad low bifor the sones of Israel, and thei myȝten no more reise nollis [up her nollis I.] ; but [and I.] the lond restide fourti ȝeer, in whiche Gedeon was souereyn. [verse 29] And so Jerobaal, sone [the sone I.] of Joas, ȝede [wente I.] , and dwellide in his [verse 30] hows; and he hadde seuenti sones, that ȝeden out of his thiȝ, for [for thi that I.] he hadde many wyues. [verse 31] Forsothe [And I.] a concubyn, `that is, secoundarie wijf [Om. B.] , of hym, whom he hadde in Sichem, gendride to hym a sone, Abymelech bi name. [verse 32] And Gedeon, sone [the sone I.] of Joas, diede in good elde, and was biried in the sepulcre of Joas, his fadir, in Ephra, of the meynee of Ezri. [verse 33] Forsothe [And I.] aftir that Gedeon was deed, the sones of Israel turneden awey `fro Goddis religioun [Om. I.] , and diden [thei diden I.] fornycacioun, `that is, idolatrie [Om. BI.] , with Baalym; and thei smytiden [smoten I.] boond of pees with Baal, that he schulde be to [verse 34] hem in to God, nether thei [Israel I.] hadden mynde of her Lord God, that delyuerede [hadde delyuered I.] hem fro the hond of alle her enemyes `bi cum|pas [verse 35] [aboute I.] ; nether thei diden merci with [to I.] the hous [meynee I.] of Gerobaal Gedeon [that is, Gedeon I.] , bi [aftir I.] alle the goodis [gode thingis I.] whiche [that I.] he `hadde do [dide I.] to Israel.
