I marg.] thing; and the Lord was wrooth [wrooth herfore I.] aȝens the sones of Israel. [verse 2] And whanne Josue sente men fro Jerico aȝens [to fiȝte aȝens I.] Hai, which [that I.] is bisidis Bethauen, at the eest coost of the citee Bethel [of Bethel IS.] , he seide to hem, Stie ȝe [ȝe up I.] , and aspie ȝe [Om. plures.] the lond. Whiche [the whiche I.] filliden [fulfillinge I.] `the comaundementis [his hestis I.] , [verse 3] and [Om. seide to Josue, Rise thou [thou up I.] ; whi liggist [lijst I.] thou low in the erthe? [verse 11] Israel synnede [hath synnede I.] , and brak [hath brak I.] my couenaunt; and [Om. I.] thei token [han take I.] of the halewid [cursid I.] thing, and thei han stole [stole of it I.] , and lieden, and hidden among her vessels. [verse 12] And [and therfore I.] Israel may not stonde bifore hise enemyes, and Israel [he I.] schal fle hem, for it is defoulid with cursyng; Y schal no more be with ȝou, til ȝe [that ȝe I.] al to breke [destrie I.] hym which [that I.] is gilti of this trespas. [verse 13] Rise thou, halewe [halewe thow I.] the puple, and seie thou to hem, Be ȝe ha|lewid aȝens to morewe; for the Lord God of Israel seith these thingis, A [O thou I.] ! Israel! cursyng is in the myddis of thee; thou schalt not mowe stonde bifor thin enemyes, til he that is defoulyd bi this trespas, be doon awei fro thee. [verse 14] And ȝe schulen come eerli, alle men bi ȝoure lynagis; and what|euer lynage the lot schal fynde, it schal come bi hise meynees [kynredes I.] ; and the [that I.] meynee [kynrede I.] schal come bi housis [meynees I.] , and the [that I.] hous [housis A pr. m. meynee I.] schal come bi men. [verse 15] And whoeuer schal be takun with this trespas, he schal be brent bi [with I.] fier with al his catel, for he brak the coue|naunt of the Lord, and dide vnleueful thing in Israel. [verse 16] Therfor Josue roos eerly, and settide [he sette I.] in ordre Israel, bi hise ly|nagis; and the lynage of Juda was [verse 17] foundun [foundun gilti I.] ; and whanne that lynage was brouȝt forth bi hise meynees, the meyne of Zare was foundun. And Josue brouȝte forth it [that meynee I.] bi men, ethir housis, and [Om. I.] foond [verse 18] Zabdi [he foond Zabdi gilti I.] ; whos hows [housholde meynee I.] he [Josue I.] departide in to alle [dyuerse I.] men bi hemsilf; and he foond [foond gilti I.] Achar, the sone of Charmy, sone of Zabdi, sone of Zare, of the lynage of Juda. [verse 19] And he [Josue I.] seide to Achar, My sone, ȝyue thou glorie to the Lord God of Israel, and knowleche thou, and schew to me what thou hast do; hide thou not [it not I.] . [verse 21] Y dide [haue do I.] `so and so [thus and thus I.] ; for among the spuylis Y siȝ a reed mentil ful good, and two hun|drid siclis of siluer, and a goldun reule of fifti siclis; and Y coueytide [coueytide tho I.] , and took awei, and hidde [I hidde tho.] in the erthe, aȝens the myddis of my tabernacle; and Y hilide the siluer with erthe [the erthe IC.] doluun. [verse 22] Therfor [Thanne I.] Josue sente mynystris [seruauntis I.] , whyche [the whyche I.] runnen to his tabernacle, and foundun alle thingis [these thingis I.] hid in the same place, and the siluer to|gidere; [verse 23] and thei token [token these thingis I.] awei fro the tente, and brouȝten [thei brouȝten I.] `tho thingis [hem I.] to Josue, and to alle the sones of Israel; and thei cast|iden [castiden hem I.] forth bifor the Lord. [verse 24] Therfor [Thanne I.] Jo|sue took Achar, the sone of Zare, and the siluer, and the mentil, and the goldun reule, and hise sones, and douȝtris, oxun [his oxun I.] , assis, and scheep, and the [his self I.] tabernacle `it silf [Om. I.] , and al the purtenaunce of household [his household I.] , and al Israel with Josue; and thei [Om. I.] ledden [verse 25] hem [him A pr. m. et plures.] to the valei of Achar; where Josue seide [seide to him I.] , For thou disturblidist [hast distourblid I.] vs, the Lord schal disturble [ful out distourble I.] thee in this dai. And al Israel stonyde hym [and al Israel stonyde him. Achar synnede in double ma|ner, that is, in the synne of sacrilegie, in stelinge an ha|lewid thing, and he synnede in defouling of the sabat, for he dide that thefte in the day of sabat, and therfor he was punysched bi double peyne; that is, of ston|yng for the breking of sa|bat, and this peyne is or|deyned for breking of the sabat in XV co. of Numery; the ij. tyme he was punysched bi the peyne of brennyng with hise purte|naunces, as God comaundide in this co. Lire here. C.] ; and alle thingis that weren hise, weren wastid bi fier. [verse 26] And thei gaderiden on [upon I.] hym a greet heep of stoonys, whiche [the whiche I.] dwellen [abiden there I.] til [stille I. Om. K.] in to present [this I.] day. And the strong veniaunce of the Lord was turned awei fro hem [Israel I.] ; and the name of that place was [is I.] clepid the valey of Achar `til to [vnto I.] day [this day I.] .
