[verse 1] In the same tyme Josue clepide men [the men I.] of Ruben, and men [the men I.] of Gad, and half the [verse 2] lynage of Manasses, and seide [he seide I.] to hem, Ȝe han do alle thingis whiche Moises, `ser|uaunt of the Lord [the Lordis seruaunt I. the seruaunt of the Lord GK.] , comaundide to ȝou, [verse 3] also ȝe obeieden to me in alle thingis; nether ȝe han lefte ȝoure britheren in mych tyme til in to present [this present I.] dai, and ȝe kepten [han kept I.] the comaundement [heest I.] of ȝoure Lord God. [verse 4] Therfor for ȝoure Lord God ȝaf [hath ȝoue I.] reste and pees to ȝoure britheren, as he bihiȝte, turne ȝe aȝen, and go ȝe in to ȝoure taber|naclis, and in to the loond of ȝoure pos|sessioun, which [the which I.] lond Moyses, the `ser|uaunt of the Lord [Lordis seruaunt I.] , ȝaf to ȝou biȝende [verse 5] Jordan; so onely that ȝe kepe bisili, and fille [fulfille I.] in werk the comaundement and [of the IK. of DEFLMNOPQRSUXb.] lawe, `which lawe [that I.] Moises, the `seruaunt of the Lord [Lordis seruaunt I.] , comaundide to ȝou; that ȝe loue ȝoure Lord God, and go in alle hise weies, and kepe hise heestis, and cleue to hym and serue him [Om. plures.] in al ȝoure herte, and in al ȝoure soule. And whanne Josue leet hem go in to her tabernaclis, and hadde blessid [verse 8] hem, he seyde to hem, With myche catel and richessis turne ȝe aȝen to ȝoure seetis; with siluer and gold, and bras, and yrun, and myche [with myche I.] clothing; departe ȝe the prey of enemyes with ȝoure britheren. [verse 9] And the sones of Ruben, and the sones of Gad, and `half the [the half I.] lynage of Manasses turneden aȝen, and ȝeden fro the sones of Israel fro Silo, which [that I.] is set in the lond of Canaan, that thei schulden entre in to Galaad, the lond of her possessioun, which [that I.] thei gaten bi `comaundement of the Lord [the Lordis heest I.] in the hond of Moises. [verse 10] And whanne thei hadden come to the litle hillis [to the litle hillis; in Ebreu it is, to the termes of Jor|dan. C.] of Jordan, in to the lond of Canaan, thei bildiden bisidis Jordan an auter of greetnesse [an auter of greetnesse; in Ebreu it is, an auter of gret|teste siȝt. C.] ouer comyn mesure. [verse 11] And whanne the sones of Israel hadden herd this, and certeyn messangeris hadden teld to hem, that the sones of Ruben, and of Gad, and the half lynage of Manasses hadden bildid an auter in the lond of Ca|naan, on [upon I.] the heepis of Jordan, aȝens the [verse 12] sones of Israel, alle [alle thei I.] camen togidir in Silo, that [and S.] thei schulden stie [stie up I.] , and fiȝte aȝens hem. [verse 13] And in the meene tyme thei senten to hem in to the lond of Galaad, Fynees, [verse 14] preest [the preest I.] , the sone of Eleazar, and ten princes [prestis I.] with hym; of ech lynage o prince. [verse 15] Whiche [the whiche I.] camen to the sones of Ruben, and of Gad, and of [to GIKMNOXb.] the [Om. CF.] half lynage of Ma|nasses, in to the lond of Galaad, and [verse 16] seiden [thei seiden I.] to hem, Al the puple of the Lord sendith [sendith to ȝou I.] these thingis; What is this [Om. [verse 19] That if ȝe gessen, that the lond of ȝoure possessioun is vncleene, passe [passe ȝe plures.] to the lond, `in which [that I.] the taber|nacle of the Lord is [is ynne I.] , and dwelle ȝe among vs, oneli that ȝe go not awei fro the Lord, and fro oure felouschipe, bi an auter bildid [to ȝou for ȝoure fantasie I marg.] outakun the auter of oure Lord God. [verse 20] Whether [Wher plures.] not Achar, the sone of Zare, passide the comaundement [heest I.] of the Lord, and his [the Lordis I.] ire felde on [upon I.] al the puple of Israel? And he was o man; and we wolden that he aloone hadde perischid in his trespas. [verse 21] And the sones of Ruben, and of Gad, and of half the lynage of Ma|nasses, answeriden to the princes of the [verse 22] message of Israel, The strongeste Lord God hym silf of Israel knowith, and Israel schal vndirstonde togidere; if we bildiden this auter for entent of trespassyng, `that is, of [Om. it be of oure riȝt to offre brent sacri|fices [sacrifice I.] , and sacrifices [sleyn offryngis I.] , and pesible sacri|fices; and that ȝoure sones seie not to morewe to oure sones, No part in the [verse 28] Lord is to ȝou. And [That I.] if `ȝoure sones [thei I.] wolen seie this, `oure sones [me I.] schulen answere hem, Lo! the auter of the Lord, which [that I.] oure fadris maden [maden it I.] , not in to brent sacri|fices, nether [ne I.] in to sacrifice [sleyn sacrifices I.] , but in to oure and ȝour witnessing euerlastinge [in to oure and ȝoure wit|nessing, that we han riȝt to come and offre in the place of Goddis tabernacle, and in to ȝoure wit|nessing, that ȝe han not power to putte us awey. [verse 29] Fer be this trespas fro vs, that we go awei fro the Lord, and forsake hise steppis, bi an auter bildid to brent sacrifices, and sa|crifices [slayn sacrifices I.] , and sacrifices of preisyng to be offrid [offrid theron I.] , outakun the auter of oure [Om. I.] `Lord God [the Lord oure God I.] , which [that I.] is bildid bifore his taber|nacle. [verse 30] And whanne these thingis weren herd, Fynees, preest, and the [Om. I.] princes of message [the message I.] of Israel, that weren with hym, weren plesyd; and thei resseyueden gladli the wordis of the sones of Ruben, and of Gad, and of the half lynage of Manasses. [verse 31] And Finees, preest [the preest I.] , the sone of Eleazar, seide to hem, Now we wyten, that the Lord is with ȝou; for ȝe ben alien [alien or giltlees I.] fro this trespassyng, and ȝe han delyuered the sones of Israel fro the hond, `that is, punyschyng [or punyschyng I. Om. S.] , of the Lord. [verse 32] And Fynees turnede aȝen with the princes fro the sones of Ruben and of Gad, fro the lond of Galaad to the coost of Canaan, to the sones of Israel; and he telde [tolde these thingis I.] to hem. [verse 33] And the word pleside to alle men her|ynge [herynge it I.] ; and the sones of Israel preisiden God, and seiden, that no [thei wolden no I.] more `thei schulden [Om. I.] stie aȝens hem, and fiȝte, and do awei the lond of her possessioun. [verse 34] And the sones of Ruben and the sones of Gad clepiden the auter, which [that I.] thei hadden bildid, Oure Witnessyng, that the Lord hym silf is God [that the Lord him silf is God; that is, that the Lord is oure God, as and of the Ebrews that dwellen in the lond of Canaan, ether of biheest.
