History

Founded in 1810 in Massachusetts, the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) was an interdenominational organization (becoming Congregationalist after 1870) established to help spread Christianity worldwide through missionary activity.

According to the constitution and by-laws, the duties of the Prudential Committee were to execute Board resolutions, appoint locations to attempt missions, explore possibilities for future missionary enterprises, appoint agents, authorize aspects of the Treasurer's duties, and perform "all duties necessary, in their opinion, to promote the objects of the Board."
