James Shields Coon was born on January 10, 1818, in Salem, New York, to Rufus Coon (1781-1858) and his wife, Mary Poole (1780-1856); he had at least one brother, Daniel, who died on December 20, 1848. In April 1841, he began to study law in the office of Salem lawyer John Crary, but later moved to Schaghticoke, New York, where he continued his legal studies with T. C. Ripley. In May 1844, he passed the bar exam, and began to practice law in Argyle, New York, where he became a justice of the peace in 1846. He married Jane Clegg on May 11, 1846, and they had three children: Abigail Maria (b. November 21, 1848), John James (b. November 9, 1850), and Charles Ambrose (May 10, 1857-July 13, 1858).
