Biographical/Historical Note

Ruben Lee Hammer was born October 29, 1906, in Royce City, Texas, to Elisha Littleton Hammer (1857-1937) and Deliah Francis (Hammers) Hammer (1870-1954). He married Ruth McCall. Following his wife's death, he married Lois G. Hubbard on April 18, 1984, and they divorced in 1985. He died on December 14, 1994, in Dallas, Texas. He is buried in Laurel Land Memorial Park in Dallas.

Ruth Mae Clark was born March 31, 1911, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to Emery Clark (1876-1929) and Julia Elizabeth (Davis) Clark (1879-1943). Clark married Walter Garski/Garskey, with whom she had two children: Walter and Betty Chastain (1930-2000). She subsequently married James McCall, with whom she had three children: Rose (1936-1996), John, and Stanley (1934-2003). Her third marriage was to Ruben Hammer and they lived in Dallas, Texas, until her death on June 12, 1980. She is buried in Laurel Land Memorial Park in Dallas.

This collection is made up of four love letters by Private Ruben Hammer of the United States Army, written while stationed at Camp Howze, Texas, to Mrs. Ruth McCall of Dallas, Texas. The letters mostly pertain to when Hammer will have leave to visit McCall again and to previous romantic encounters.

The letters are dated October 29, 1942; January 22, 1943; February 20, 1944; and January 10, 1945.

The Hammer-McCall letters were acquired as part of the Jennie Nutter Correspondence, but they do not appear to relate to the Nutter materials.
