He earned a M.A. in Journalism from Central Michigan University (CMU, 1973) and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in creative writing and literary criticism in 1984 from International College in San Diego, California.

During his career in journalism, Schock worked as a producer and broadcaster for WCMU-FM in 1973, and as managing editor of the Chippewa Hills Courier (Barryton, Michigan), 1974-1976, the Buyer’s Guide (Mount Pleasant, Michigan), 1978-1981, and the Morning Sun, also in Mount Pleasant, 1981-1983. During the summer of 1987 Schock worked as a feature reporter for WLNS-TV, Channel 6, Lansing (Michigan).

In academia, Schock worked as an instructor in the Journalism Department at CMU in 1984. From 1985 to 1991 he worked as an Assistant Professor in the Broadcast and Cinematic Arts Department.

While at CMU, Schock wrote newsletters for Media Relations, now Information Services, 1983-1985, and served as editor of Centralight, 1983-1985. From 1984 to 1987, Schock also served as executive producer and host of “Central Stage,” an hour-long radio show featuring performances by CMU music faculty which was broadcast on CMU Public Radio (WCMU/WCML-FM). Schock also served as assistant editor of the University Bookman, a scholarly quarterly edited by Dr. Russell Kirk, 1977-1978 and 1982-1986. (The Russell Kirk papers are also housed at the Clarke.)
