Nicholas Fulton was born in New York circa1823. He lived in Clinton County as an agricultural dealer with his wife Abigail and their three children: James R., Ellen, Lucy, and Louesa. Fulton enlisted to serve in the civil war, as did his son. The account of their service according to the Record of First Michigan Engineers and Mechanics is as follows:
Fulton, Nicholas B. Enlisted in company M, Engineers and Mechanics. October 10, 1863, at Detroit, for 3 years, age 41. Mustered October 28, 1863. Mustered out at Nashville, Tennessee, September 22, 1865. He died May 15, 1898.
Fulton, James R., Essex. Enlisted in company L, Engineers and Mechanics, July 18, 1863, at Maple Rapids, for 3 years, age 16. Mustered August 5, 1863. Mustered out at Nashville, Tenn., September 22, 1865. His residence was Maple Rapids, Michigan.
Walter Gamble was born in New York in October, 1868. He had one daughter Athol, with his spouse Lucy whom he married in 1891. Gamble lived in Clinton, Michigan and was a dealer in agriculture.
Martin, Culwell. Enlisted in company M, Engineers and Mechanics, August 31, 1863, at North Star, for 3 years, age 34. Mustered September 17, 1863. Corporal July, 1864. Mustered out at Nashville, Tennessee, September 22, 1865.

Collection Scope and Content Note
This collection contains materials related to Nicholas Fulton and Walter Gamble. The records concern topics of business and tax receipts, land records, pension claims, medicinal recipes and military appointment papers. The Gamble papers include hunting tags and registration, vehicle registration and correspondence.
Note: The collection also includes one military certificate issued to Culwell Martin. The account of his service during the Civil War according to the Record of First Michigan Engineers and Mechanics is noted in the biography section above.
