Dr. James Edward Fitting (1939- ) was the first State Archaeologist of Michigan during the 1970s. He earned his doctorate from the University of Michigan. He was an Associate Professor of Anthropology at Case Western Reserve University. He later earned a law degree and in 2003 worked as a lawyer for the Navaho Nation.
