phonological distribution. This book divides the dialects of Tohoku into two parts: the northern dialects (in the
areas of Aomori prefecture, the Syonai district of Yamagata prefecture, and the Naiibu manor of Iwate prefecture);
and the southern dialects (the areas of Hukusima prefecture, Miyagi prefecture, the Murayama Okitama districts
of Yamagata prefecture, the Date manor of Iwate prefecture). The book employs phonetic symbols. The chapter
on pronunciation is based on the research of Hirayama Teruo; it also makes use of dialect questionnaires given
to school teachers.
