Dear Friend,

Your letter came about an
hour ago. I have written to Mattie to come
by the day train, which arrives from N. York
about 5 in the afternoon, I believe; which
according to your card, will not leave
time enough to get to your Beverly train.
I thought it would be pleasanter to her
to come all through in the day time, instead
of changing from boat to cars in the night:
Moreover, in that case, she would arrive in
Boston at 7 in the morning, and our
stage can not convey me there till ten.
The getting to Beverly by my own unaided
wit looks rather pokerish on that card.
It always did seem to me further off than
New York, but never quite so far off as
since the publication of that card.
So I think I will take Mattie to Mrs.
Follen's in the first place, and go down
