I have been disappoint-
-ed in not sending you this volume
earlier. Mr. Francis promised to
have it done before any were offered
for sale, but he forgot to attend to
it; and when it was at last done,
there was a mistake, and it had to
be altered.

I took the liberty of dedicating it to
you, without asking leave, as is
customary toward Queen Victoria.
