Miss Lewald, whom I have formerly mentioned to you, has written a sensible article about German women, which has been translated for the "Inde- pendent." She speaks of the numbers who think they could make their everlasting fortune if they could only get their names published on the title-page of a novel. When she tells them how few prizes there are in that lottery, and advises them to learn some trade or profession, and work out their independence, they feel as if she proposed degradation to them, and accuse her of being hypocritical in profess- ing to feel a lively interest in the welfare and elevation of women. I know how to sympathize with Miss Lewald. I have made many enemies among women, simply because I could not supply their demands of getting a living in some genteel and distinguished way.
