Wayland, Dec 10th, 1857. My precious friend, I am glad to hear that your fever has subsided, and that your appetite is good. Now, with care and patience you will do well enough. I hope you will be able to be removed before long; partly because the weather is usually crack- ing cold as we near Christmas, and partly because all the doctors and nurses say that change of air is essential in whooping cough. I well remember what whoops I used to hear over in Hoboken, on Sundays, the only day when poor laboring women could carry their children abroad for fresh air.
