L[ydia] Maria C[hild] ALS to [Ellis Gray Loring], November 27, 1856

Lydia Maria Child Papers, 1831-1894 [Box 1, Folder 61]

Wayland, Thanksgiving Morn, 4 O'clock Dear Friend, My poor old father is at rest. His spirit passed away from the shattered tenement about two hours ago. I am quiet, though very sad. I am glad to have him released, but I, who crave love so much, shall never again in this world be so important to any one as I was to him. I shall be more free to come and go, as I will; but there will be no one looking out at the window for the stage to stop; no moaning voice saying, "Why don't my darter come." I'm afraid she is going to stay all night." Thank God, I never disap- -pointed him. I always returned to him. Good bye. God bless you, Your affectionate Maria I do not think your presence is needed for anything. His personal effects are mere trifles.
