Wayland, Oct 26th, 1856

Dear Louise,

I intended to have written to
you immediately after I received, through Anna,
your very kind and pressing invitation to come
to Beverly. But you will excuse me, I know,
when I tell you that I have been writing
about Kansas, for papers far and wide;
and that I have been cutting out and
making up 60 yards of cloth for Kansas;
hurrying till late into the nights, to get the
garments done before the severe cold came
on, and the roads became impassable for
baggage-wagons. Besides that, I confess
that I also had the fear of Buchanan's
election before my eyes, and therefore felt
more strongly that whatsoever was done
for the relief of Kansas must be done
quickly. The present neutralily is a
