L[ydia] Maria Child ALS to [Ellis Gray Loring?], January 7, 1855
Lydia Maria Child Papers, 1831-1894 [Box 1, Folder 53]
I several years ago resolved not to fritter away what little intellect I had upon articles for periodicals, of any description; and I have signified it in my answers to many publishers. Even if I were inclined to break this resolution, I should not do it situated as I now am, and as I am likely to be, I might as well write to the world from a hole in the ground. Simon's Pillar would be a stirring scene of action, compared with it. Considering how little I am known to the public, as a writer; how difficult it is for me to obtain a chance to publish what I write; and what very poor success I had in trying to increase the number of subscribers to the Standard, when I had the care of it; it is certainly something to have a guarantee that my contributions to its columns "would be gratefully and respectfully received." I am obliged to them; but I have no occasion to take their magnanimity. I thank you, dear friend, for your never failing kindness, and your prompt attention to my troublesome affairs. With my heart's warm love to Louise, Ever yours with grateful affection, L. Maria Child. {docket} Jan 1855 {end docket}
