[Lydia] Maria [Child] ALS to Anna Loring, September 28, 1846

Lydia Maria Child Papers, 1831-1894 [Box 1, Folder 37]

to send the cloth here to be cut. Maria Eldridge is just about my height, and perhaps she would be good enough to stand for the measure. If I had one cut myself, I should have it cut like two cross-wise shawls, rounding upward; one nearly as long as the dress, the other falling over it, below the waist considerably. I suppose mother understands what sort of style I mean. If she likes any better, she may suit herself. I think that is the simplest, least pretending style. Sleeves, to slip in and out at pleasure, would be convenient. Jeannie Barrett has sent me three beautiful opera-caps; so I see no help for it. I must resign myself to be a woman of fashion; though I don't know of any mortal who will be edified by my elegance, except Friend Hopper and John. I was charmed by the little blue bottle in E. Flat. I was sorry, too, to part from you just as I was beginning to get acquainted with you, as a young lady. I haven't got used to thinking of you as "Miss Loring," because your image always comes with the great grey cat at Cottage Place. Next season, I hope we shall have a good quiet time together, somewhere. In the mean time, you must not imagine that I "do not take much interest in your little affairs"; for I do take very great interest in your little affairs. I always did love you dearly, and I always shall. But after I saw you last spring, my affection for you all was brightened up. I see what an argument I am putting into your mouths. You will turn round and say, "Then why not come to Boston?"
