Oct 18th 1843 Dearest Louise, I have been a long time intending to send you this thermom- -eter, in exchange for the one I used to have in Cottage Place; but I have been prevented for want of a suitable box to pack it without injury. I obtained one once; but John begged it from me, to fill with flowers for a young lady. At last, there comes another, all the way from Cambridge Mass. filled, by an unknown hand, with beautiful fringed Gentians, "for the author of Letters from New York."
