L[ydia] M[aria] Child ALS to Ellis Gray Loring, May 6, 1842
Lydia Maria Child Papers, 1831-1894 [Box 1, Folder 14]
New York May 6th 1842 Dear Friend, I received your letter about an hour ago. I was not surprised at the light in which you viewed the Circular of our Executive Committee; but I think you would have viewed it differently, had you known the excited state of our city, and our extreme difficulty in getting a place to meet in. In consequence of Garrison's article, no place has as yet been obtained, though we have deemed it best to promise indemnifi- -cation for any losses that might be incurred by a mob. Your opinion does not in the least depress me, my dear friend; so feel no concern on that score. I have acted according to my own convictions of duty; and in such a case even your opinion does not disturb me. I write this speedily, not because I am in the least degree excited, but because it may be useful to our Massachusetts friends to know that on one subject my mind is made up, beyond all power of change. Under no circumstances whatever, let who will urge it, will I ever go to Philadelphia to reside. I do not utter this as a threat; but that they may have the fact {written perpendicularly in the left margin} N.B. Agencies have been very expensive. Not more than two of the agents have paid their own way. Were it not for this, I think the paper might very nearly support itself now. {end perpendicular writing}
