[Lydia] Maria [Child] ALS to [Anna Loring], June 21, 1840
Lydia Maria Child Papers, 1831-1894 [Box 1, Folder 5]
Yesterday, I met a little wild rabbit sitting in the middle of the road; and he was so tame I almost put my hand on him before he stirred. I love these little creatures. If men were only innocent and kind, they would come about our door steps as familiar as kittens. How is your puss? Last week I saw a squirrel eat, for the first time in my life; and it was a funny sight - The queer, nimble little beast! "Come here, and you shall see them all, The timid, and the bold; For their sweet life of pleasantness, It is not to be told." I [lot?] upon having you come here with dear mother. I wish you were here this minute. I am glad to hear that you practise your music so diligently. I am trying to conquer my faults, too - trying to be quiet, and patient. Give my love to Lucy Ann. I often think how she used to comfort me, with her kind, attentive ways. I am glad she did not come up with me, as she proposed. She would have been almost tired to death. I had rather she would come up by and bye and enjoy herself. Good bye. Yrs in love, Aunt Maria.
