L[ydia] M[aria] C[hild] ALS to Louisa [Gilman] Loring, April 16, 1839
Lydia Maria Child Papers, 1831-1894 [Box 1, Folder 4]
will I think quite renovate me. I have not heard one new thought, or an old one newly expressed, since I came here; except in the sermons of Mr. Stearns; and they were rather pleasing and soothing than exciting. You dont know how I mourn for Mr. Stearns. He had such child-like simplicity, with the well-principled integrity of a mature Christian. Now, my only source of real satisfac- -tion is teaching is in teaching a merry little Irish girl, and hunting up wild flowers, which have been brought forth thus early by the genial weather. As for Anti Slavery, I have lost my pleasure in it; though I am as ready to work as ever. The idea that different sects can labor together harmoniously for universal good, must be numbered with many other pleasing illusions of my imagination. It seems as if the Emancipator was determined to widen the breach. What could be more unkind than for Lewis Tappan to intimate that he courteously suppressed some things done and said at the Quarterly meeting, because they were too bad to be reported? I am not surprised at the result in the Female Antics. I should consider it remarkable if it were otherwise. {written perpendicularly in the right margin} I thank Lucy Ann very much. You do not disclaim the charge about Philothea. Have you thus got the upper- hands of me? If so, you are slyer than I thought. Carter is absolutely wild about Anti Slavery. She will be pleased that you have remembered her. {end perpendicular writing} {address} Louisa Loring. Washington St. Boston. {end address} {docket} X April 39 {end docket}
